During the assembly, grade seven students participated in such activities as walking races and wheelbarrow races, and wheelbarrow races. Mrs. West, Mrs. Jones, and several grade seven students put on a variety program. Also during the assembly, Mr. Hagel was presented with a tray in appreciation of his work with junior high in the past. "Welcome Back Day" was a large success and was enjoyed by everyone. 1 1 AWARDS NIGHT Among those receiving recognition at W.R. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE "take care of yourself, ya hear!" Left to Right: J. Ginther, Sports; D. Sheen, Clubs; P. Antoniuk, Pub; T. Gillespie, Pres.; B. Kilback, 1st Vice; N. Sakamoto, Soc. Con.; D. Oliver, Advisor; E. Hanna, Sec.; S. Campbell, Pep; C. Zelenka, Grad; C. Smith, Grad; M. Kern, Tres.; (N.P. ) L. Pylypow, 2nd Vice (N.P.). PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE This is not the president's message I wanted to print. The president's message I wanted to print was to my fellow graduates ... a kind of "take care of yourself, ya hear". But then the editors of this book didn't want that as a president's message. "Tell us what council is going to do this year", they said. So even though this is really the editors' message I'm still president and I'm writing it, so it's a president's message (I think). Although we've got some objectives, one dance per month, and graduation, we can hardly say that will happen, mainly because we don't know what the students want to do. Our purpose after all, is to serve the students and hopefully make them say thirty years from now, "Yup, old Myers School was a pretty good place back in 77-78". So, that's my president's - editors' - president's message. Don't look for a sequel. Tom Gillespie P.S. "Take care of yourself, ya hear." 14 JR. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE JUNIOR PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE We, the junior council, are responsible for giving the students an enjoyable school year. Arranging social activities, dress-up days, and assemblies is mostly on our hands. We, however, can only produce these activities; you, the students and teachers, must take part. Having a good year means participation by both students and teachers. Activities such as dances, basketball games, and other sports may seem only for the benefit of the students, but are for the teachers as well. Dress-up days include both teachers and students to develop our school spirit. As you can see, one of our major goals is to unite the students and teachers through various activities. We believe if the teachers and students can be together socially, they can get along better in school, and have a happier and more rewarding school year. Tracy Kanomata Back Row, L. to R.: S. Throughout the year games were played against Barnwell, Grassy Lake, and St. Mary's and at the end of the league, Myers and Barnwell were tied for first place. To conclude the season, an invitational tournament was held. Here, Myers advanced to the finals but were defeated. The team was coached by Mrs. T. Malensky. 43 This Year, the Trotters competed in a Southern 3A Basketball League. The team had a record of 3 wins and 7 losses in this new league, which involves teams from Medicine Hat, Coaldale, and Brooks. The Trotters also attended a tourney at McCoy High School in Medicine Hat, where they captured the consolation prize. We are looking forward to a good season next year, back in the old Southwest Conference. Sponsored by: Green Power Ltd. B.R., L. -R.: B. Rogers, J. Lothian, B. Nielsen, L. Johnson. M.R.: K. HIGH GIRLS' BASKETBALL TEAM A total of twelve girls tried out for the basketball team this year. Our coach, Mr. Anderson, gave us encouragement when we needed it and by the end of the season, everyone had improved tremendously. We won more than half of our games and consistently gave our opponents a good fight. Next year promises to be an even better season for the W.R. Myers Saints. Come and support your team! The team had a 2 win, 4 loss record in regular season play and competed in 2 tournaments, hosting one at Myers and traveling to Hamilton Jr. High for the other. The 1978 season was a rebuilding year as there were only two grade 9 boys on the squad. We are optimistic about a strong team for next year. Sponsored by: Tower Theatre This year, Myers' junior girls' basketball team was coached by Mrs. Malinsky. The team competed with Barnwell, St. Mary's and Grassy Lake during league play and finished with a 4 win, 2 loss record. At an exhibition game, the girls played against Raymond, Brooks, and emerged victorious. In Myers' Invitational tourney, which included teams from Raymond, Brooks, and St. Mary's, our team captured third place and Peggy Williams was awarded "Most Valuable Player". At the Jr. High Divisional Tourney, Myers finally beat Barnwell (the team that they had previously lost 2 games to) to become the Divisional Champs for 1978. Myers' Ski Club enjoyed a very successful year this season, with an increase in members to 47, and SNOW in the mountains for a change. The club kicked off its season with fund raising campaigns in the fall. It ran a concession for the post-season volleyball tourney, catered to a staff luncheon, and held a bake sale. As we decided to go in style this year, we said "No" to the Community Club bus and travelled via Greyhound to Fernie in December and January for one day trips. We wound up the season with a super weekend trip to Kimberley and Fernie in March. Highlights of the year: - Mr. C. got his new poles ripped off in Kimberly. - Allan Mills "Man, this trip was a slice! ! " - Craig Martens at top of Bear: "You've gotta be kidding! !" - John Lothian after he fell and twisted his ankle: Awx! ! ??x! ! Though large in number the club is not, its members have a great deal of fun and at the same time, learn a thing or two. The goal is not necessarily to develop skills for competition but rather to develop strength and muscle tone while at the same time achieving gymnastic proficiency. At the annual talent night, the club demonstrated its capabilities by performing on the parallel bars. The club operated from December to April this year, and will do the same next year, hopefully with a few more members. F. R., L. to R.: C. Nishima, T. Kanamata, J. Hooge, C. Maruyama, J. Membership includes students from grades 7 through 12. Sponsored by: Royal Bank of Canada This year's club was a small but dedicated group of shuttle chasers. Under the guidance of Chuck Wallace and Ken Lawson, the group enjoyed many hours of intense competition every Monday and Wednesday night. KTIV REACH FOR THE TOP After several weeks of arduous practice, our team took part in the Southern Zone Playoffs held in Lethbridge on February 3 and 4. Once again our Reach for the Top team did our school proud as they defeated teams from Winston Churchill andL.C.I. before being edged out by Coaldale in the finals. Members of the team this year included: Willie Gow, Tom Gillespie, Monte Johnson, David Sheen, and D. Ferguson, Advisor. 54 DEBATING TEAM best speaker award These debates do drag on, don't they? The W.R. Myers Debate Club expanded its activity in '78 by hosting its first Debate Law Seminar on Feb. 11. Teams from Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Tilley, Picture Butte, and St. Mary's competed in the event. Myers' team of John Hooger-dyk and Wayne Ikebuchi placed 2nd in high school division. CHILDREN S THEATER The success or failure of any drama class is directly related to the attitude of the enrolled students. They must be enthusiastic about the activities and be willing to work co-operatively. This year's classes were of very high caliber because the students were receptive to the precept that; "You only get out of a drama class what you put into it. " Their enthusiasm provided the kind of atmosphere in which creativity flourished. The pictures on this page were taken during a performance at St. Mary's kindergarten. Myers drama students have entertained hundreds of young students over the past several years. Prospective students often ask the question, "Will we be doing Children's Theater?" before deciding to to enroll in the class or not. This attests to the popularity of this kind of performance. Two Myers drama students, Harvey Tams and Colleen Arnett entered drama competitions in Taber and Edmonton. Harvey took first place in local competition and both competitors received high praise from the adjudicators in Edmonton. It was a good year! 62 ACTIVITIES JR. HIGH BAND AND CHORUS The Junior High C

Liesl Steinborn had a strong season. She went undefeated at a tournament; placed 4th out of 15 at Rural provincials to qualify for provincials with the top five wrestlers moving on. She then placed 6th at provincials. A strong showing for her. Andrea Harvey was very strong at all tournaments. She made all her opponents step up and compete as she had a quick start no matter how experienced her opponent was. She was a rookie who surprised a lot of wrestlers. She placed second out of 12 wrestlers at Rural Provincials winning a silver medal. Then went on to place fifth out of 15 at Provincials. Peter Waeckerlin surprised the provincial wrestling world last year by winning a bronze medal in provincials. This last season he was strong at all tournaments. He placed first out of 12 wrestlers at Rural Provincials winning a gold medal. At Provincials he placed third to win a bronze medal, narrowly missing out on a chance for a shot at the gold. He was ranked as the #1 wrestler in the province for most of the year in his weight class. He might have lost a couple matches, but was never beat. He was a strong wrestler who was very respectful of his opponents and represented his school very well. Our Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Year award was given to Peter Waeckerlin. Curling // There were two curling teams this year. The mixed team comprised of Keeley Miller, Cole Swarbrick, Karlee Martin and Thane Buckingham, won against Bow Island at Divisionals and moved on to Zones in Lethbridge. At Zones they placed third. The girls team, comprised of Sonja Mellema, Ashleigh Little, Jordyn Clarke and Jessi Young, had a bye at Divisionals and moved onto a great first appearance at Zones. 28 29 Sr. Boys Basketball// The SV Boys Basketball Team had another successful season, finishing with an overall record of 19 wins, 14 losses, and were League, Zone, and Provincial Consolation Finalists. We want to thank our Seniors Michael Johnson, Bradley Marsden, Tate Platt, Bradyn Mitchell, and Ashton Bekkering for their commitment and dedication to Rebels Basketball, and we look forward to our returning players next season; Granger Leth, Cole Layton, Denver Terry, Dylan Johnson, Denzel Gross, and Brett Andrus. 30 The SV Girls Basketball Team had another very successful season, finishing 3rd in the League before winning the Zone Banner for a 3rd consecutive year and finishing as Provincial Silver Medalists. We want to thank our Seniors Millay Johnson, Genna Wright, Jenna Nelson, Natalie Hoyt, and Rachel Jensen for their commitment and dedication to Rebels Basketball, and we look forward to our returning players next season; Lauren Steed, Langley Moser, Reagan Bailey, Kitawna Sparks, and Austen Robbins. Sr. Girls Basketball// 31 W.R. Myers 2016-2017 A HIT AT MYERS II After weeks of rehearsals, and right down to literal last minute painting, the curtains opened and audiences were treated to a wonderful show that will bring heart-warming memories for years to come to anyone that saw the show. 54th STREET PLAYERS 32 33 STUDENT LIFE 34 W.R. Myers 2016-2017 A classic Broadway musical. A timeless story of the intergenerational conflict. This play had been on my short list of possible productions for years, the problem being, “Who would play Tevye?" The role demanded that “just right” actor. After working with Diane Llewelyn-Jones on Annie she approached me with a solution. Do the show the way Myers had done it in 1975, have a school staff member play Tevye. In 75 Mr. Frank Sudol rose to the challenge of playing Tevye, in 2017 we were blessed to have our own very talented staff member Mr. Dale Friesen assume the mantle of Teyve. It seemed that Fiddler was destined to be produced at Myers at least one more time. This is not to say the play was not without its challenges. A significant technical hurdle had to be cleared when we were not able to recruit a pit band, and there is always the task of turning the gym into a theater for a 3 day run of the show. Thanks to an amazingly talented, and energetic production team Myers was able to provide a venue to show case the talents of sixty-two students. When we did Grease in 2007 I did not know what to expect, would students participate, would an audience come? It is as they say, “If you build it they will come.” Through the years Myers musicals have enjoyed tremendous support from the school body, and community at large, and I am very grateful for having the opportunity to play my part as a director, stage manager, lighting & technical director, and as with Fiddler, producer. We went shopping in Prague, took a tour of the city, and tried some delicious food! After that, we drove to Munich and went to Dachau concentration camp for a sobering reminder of what not to let ever happen again. Afterwards, we visited the Palace in downtown After Munich, we travelled on to Austria and the Swiss Alps. There was a lot of snow and it reminded us of home! We drove up the mountain to see Neuschwanstein castle. It was like looking at something out of a story book! After a long, windy up hill climb on foot we were taken on a tour. It was breathtaking! Munich as well as having pretzels and schnitzel! We watched the Glockenspiel clock chime and walked around MarienPlatz. Our group made some lifelong friends with others that were on our bus-from Calgary, Quebec and Massachusetts! It truly was a trip of a lifetime! A tour of the city helped us understand where the Nazi regime started from and how the city dealt with Hitler during The Second World War. 44 TRAVEL CLUB BAND// The Concert and Stage Bands had a busy year. They performed at the Tri-School BBQ, Remembrance Day, Christmas Concert, Music of the Night Concert with Museaus (string quartet), Graduation, for Taber Day Care and the Year End Concert. The Concert Band also hosted the Dr. Hamman Grade l'sto show them all of the different instruments.. The Bands travelled to Calgary on April 27-29, 2017. They performed at two schools, participated in a music clinic, went to see Roger and Hammersteins' Cinderella and also saw the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra perform music from Elton John, Andrew Lloyd Weber and Paul McCartney and ended the trip by playing laser tag. BAND// 52 STUDENT LIFE 53 sllliisiii^^^ The SV team won the Tier 3 banner and also provincials for a 2nd year in a row! 'fil^M S.V. Girls Rugby// W.R. Myers rugby SV program was once again another successful season. We hosted our own inaugural SV pre-season tournament, bringing teams from Alberta and a Touring Side from Ontario. We went 4-0 in that festival. We also took the team to our first COUGAR CLASSIC tournament in Red Deer, where we took second place with a 3-1 record losing in the final. 54 South zone HERin girls' RUGBY " The JV season was successful once again. This rugby program that aims to develop fundamental rugby skills and to learn the complicated game of rugby was well received by the girls. The team's record was as even as it gets - winning exactly half of the games in both tournaments as well as league play. The team was young this year, but that was not at all shown in their courage, work ethic, and willingness to succeed. Well done on the season ladies! .V. Girls Rugby// 55 Our track and field team was small but very competitive. Unfortunately the weather was not very cooperative for our divisional and zone meets. Our athletes put in their best effort and were very successful. Cody Stange was the aggregate champion for Grade 9 Males and placed 4th in the 100 and 200m races at Zones. Dylan Johnson defended his zone title in the 3000m race which qualified him for provincials in Edmonton. li^W Abbey Allred Ty Anderson Favorite Class: Propably art because of the independence, but I loved all my teachers. The annual publication of the students of W. R. Myers High School Taber, Alberta. (Volume 1987-1988)pdfLife is a series of experiences, and most of us have the goal of having as many quality experiences as possible in hopes of having a full and rewarding existence. Our goal at W.R. Myers High School is to provide experiences whether they be educational, recreational, or social which will most enrich the lives of our students. This yearbook attempts to capture and preserve some of these experiences along with the people who helped make them possible. Congratulations to Mrs. Mayer and the students in the Journalism class for all of the hard work which they expended in compiling another outstanding yearbook. Especially though, we extend our appreciation to all of the staff and students who helped make the 1987/88 school year such a memorable one. Because of you, this book is possible; and because of you, we are able to relive the experiences of this past year again and again. School tends to be nostalgic as time goes by. Hopefully, the graduating class will have fond memories of W.R. Myers and the lessons learned will be of value as you progress through life. Difficult times will face you in the future; but I know, that with the grace and determination you have acquired, those challenges will be met and conquered. For the returning students, you have the opportunity to build your memories at W.R. Myers. Those leaving have left a legacy; take it, build on it, and make it yours. To all students - good memories and great success! 2 Lisa Mykytiw Editor Well, here it is! (finally) We hope you are pleased at what you see when flipping through pages of the 1988 yearbook "GRAFFITTI". This is my first (and unfortunately my last) year to have been part of the Yearbook Staff. I encourage each of you to perhaps join in the challenging efforts, worries, problems, hard work, shall I go on?! But really, it was fun making such a unique book. We feel a yearbook is an important part of your high school years; being able to look at it 10 years from now and remember what W.R. Myers was like, so don't let the memories die! Best of luck to everyone in 1988/89. A warm thank you to the following people for their help in putting the yearbook together - without them, it definitely would have never gotten done! Ms. Mayer - our advisor Reid Felske - our representative from Jostens David Bly and Greg Pender for pictures The Students who let us take your mug shots for candids, and those who had pictures we didn't, and kindly donated them to us. Last, but never least, the members of the '88 Graffitti yearbook. You guys are the best!! It has been a positive experience to work with other members of student council and to become friends with them. Thanks to each of you, Michelle, Carolyn, Jason, Lynette, Carrie, and Dana. You were great. Most important to me, though, were the efforts of the students in Myers as a whole. We rallied around one another through thick and thin; we fought our wars together and enjoyed the good times and survived the bad. Together we made Myers High School as good as we could. It's been a great year. One I'll remember fondly and with great satisfaction. Thank you. BACK: Michelle Urano, Sid Tams, Dana Horrocks, Carrie Kren, Carolyn Machacek, BOTTOM: lason Clarke, Lynette Warnica Being one of the biggest Key Clubs Myers has ever had, I like to think that we have accomplished a lot more than in other years. Among our activities were several fund raisers and community services. We went on a bottle drive, ran a beverage booth at the Christmas dance, held a Caveman dance, and held a wake-a-thon. For services we ran two game tables at the annual community Hallowe'en Party, held a bake sale and donated proceeds to Care and Share, and held a free car wash for the community. Unfortunately, this year the annual convention which was to be held in Thunder Bay was cancelled due to the lack of registrants. However, to make up for this loss we planned a trip to Riverside Waterslide for our own recreation. I would like to conclude by saying thanks to all the dedicated Key Clubbers and that I had a really good experience being the president of the best Key Club in Western Canada. Rounding off the year our Concert and Stage Bands combined to form a marching band, contributing to the success of the annual Taber Rodeo Parade on May 21st. Our thanks go to members of the Myers Music Association, a group of dedicated parents who have assisted throughout the year on trips, with the distribution, care and maintenance of our choir and band uniforms, and, without them, the organization of feeding the masses at our two annual concerts would have been a nightmare. Other performances this year included the opening ceremonies for AgExpo '88 in Lethbridge and the Taber Trades Fair at the Agriplex. Over and above the annual Fall and Spring concerts, the Raymond and Spruce Grove exchanges, and a concert for the Grade 5 students at Central, the Stage Band, unknown to Mr. Reid prepared and performed in the farewell supper to Mr. and Mrs. Reid at the Heritage Inn in June. The choir grew in strength this year providing the opportunity once again for three-part harmony: soprano, alto and baritone. Concerts included the Fall and Spring Concerts and the band exchanges. Throughout the Christmas season, the choir performed at Clearview Lodge, Harmony Home, Homestead Manor, and the Taber Hospital. Our contribution to the Kiwanis Carol Festival the L.D.S. Stake Centre was televised on CFAC Channels 2 and 7 at Christmas with featured soloist Kristi Layton. 20 CHOIR MEMBERS: Sheryl Bouwman, Christina Hughes, Tammy Hillmer, Michelle Turin, Michelle Howells, Angela Lutz, Lisa Myktiw, Steph Giroux, Darren Kacer, Brent Phillips, Cyndi Urano, Cindy Plettl, Yvette Vandebeek, Kerri Braun, Vai Witwer, Kristie Layton, Cindy Rombough, Janice Pierson, Julie Jensen, Tammy Turnbull, Bobbi Jo Meldrum MUSICAL EVENTS 87-88 Sept. 28 Premier Getty and cabinet - Stage Band Oct. 1 Awards Ceremony - Stage Band Nov. 18 Fall Concert - Concert Band, Choir, and Stage Band Nov. 20 Down Memory Lane - Stage Band Dec. 9 Kiwanis Carol Festival - Choir Dec. 10 Christmas Concert (daycare) - Choir Dec. 11 Christmas Concert (Homestead Manor) - Choir Dec. 15 Christmas Concert (Clearview Lodge) - Choir Dec. 1 7 Christmas Concert (Hospital) - Choir Feb. 6 Olympic Torch Relay Ceremony - Stage Band and Choir Feb. 15 Kinsmen Heritage Days Banquet - Stage Band Feb. 18 Taber Trade Fair Opening Ceremonies - Stage Band Feb. 22 Raymond High School Band Concert - Stage Band and Concert Band as guests Mar. 2 Ag-Expo '88 Opening Ceremonies - Stage Band Apr. 29 Spring Concert - Concert Band, Stage Band, and Choir May 5-7 Band Exchange Tour to Spruce Grove - Concert and Stage Band May 21 Taber Rodeo Parade - Concert and stage band combined May 27 Graduation - Large and small grad choirs BACK ROW - Kordi Pierson, Melissa Thompson, Cindy lensen FRONT ROW - Becky Hill, Shondi Bly, Tricia Doell, Holly Holtman, Janice Morinaga TOP - Wendy Weippert MIDDLE - Tricia Doell, Mandy Shewchuk BOTTOM - Janelle Sheen, Shawna Halverson, Nancy Cherneski CHEERLEADING The 1987-88 school year saw a tremendous change and improvement in the Myers cheerleader's efforts and talents. Two years ago we were a very new and raw squad whose knowledge and skill level, in this widely spreading sport, was very limited. Today, I'm proud to say, this is not the case. Through hard-work, dedication and commitment our team has excelled as a winning team in the sport. At zone competition, which we hosted, we placed second which entitled us to proceed on to Edmonton to Provincials. This was our first Provincial Competition and I'm proud of our department and efforts while representing our school. As coach of the team, I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to all the girls for their patience, hard-work, enthusiasm and most of all participation on this team. You as individuals have not only grown and improved physically, mentally and emotionally but you have also helped me to learn and grow as well. Each and everyone of you have left a lasting impression with me. To my graduating cheerleaders, Cindy, Becky and Holly, I hope your futures hold all that you dream of and more. I had never coached girls before and I learned several valuable lessons: (1) My ego was jolted firmly back into place. (2) I was forced to coach from grass roots for the first time in years. (3) Girls are more emotional. (4) Girls can be tough. (5) Girls are athletic in their own right. I think the girls on the volleyball team learned a lot as well. (1) They learned about discipline. (2) They learned about the work ethic. (3) They learned about commitment. (4) They learned about how to win. 24 Candee Jensen, Lindy Andrus, Karen Steeves, Erin Anderson, Larita Johnson, Sina Platt, and Dee Dee Rombough. (5) They learned about muscles. As a team we started in the cellar and progressed slowly upward. We couldn't beat our way out of a paper bag in September. By November we placed 2nd in the League Post Season Tournament and the McCoy Invitational, and capped it all off by winning zones for the first time in 5 years. Provincials were anti climactic for us, but all in all the year turned out to be a good one. 1 thank the girls for their commitment to a valuable ideal. We had fun! The girls were extremely intense while they played. This was a reflection of Mr. Stewart's intense coaching. Each player improved greatly during this rebuilding year, to the point that Myers gave Medicine Hat an extremely close game at the end of the season. Graduating from this year's team are Tracey Baker, Julie Evanson, and Deanna Grant, all of whom will be missed next year. However, with eight returning players Myers is certainly the team to beat next year. Heather Chipman lead the team in scoring with Tracey Baker a close second. Julie Evanson was the leading rebounder and best defensive player. Julie received an honorable mention all star at the 4A Girls League meeting. Dana Eldridge was the most improved player, making tremendous improvements in her rebounding and defense. Tracey Atwood, Deanna Grant and Carolyn Jensen all became good ball handlers and effectively handled presses. The remaining players, Andrea Jensen, Marcy Sebok, and Jackie Cline all became quality subs that actually benefitted the team when they entered the game. Unfortunately, Karen Steeves was plagued with a knee injury that kept her out of action most of the year. BOYS SENIOR TEAM This year's Rebel basketball team was a talented and aggressive team. The record was 24 wins, 13 losses. The team won the St. Mary's Warriors tourney, the MHHS tournament, and finished third at the L.C.I. tournament. The team was led by Grade 12 centre, Larry Johnson. Brad Krizan also had an outstanding season. Grade 12 graduating players are Monte Layton, Cam Francis, Jim Brown, and Larry Johnson. These guys gave their hearts and 100% effort to the program and will be missed. Thanks to my stats: Michelle Fawns, Carla Anderson, and Mandy Shewchuck. Myers students were awesome. We averaged about 500 fans per game and their noise level and enthusiasm was superb. Thanks to the cheerleaders as well - you were great! I hope you will look back on this year with fond memories. I'll treasure this year as I hope you will. J.V. BASKETBALL 1987-88 This year's J.V. Basketball team started off slowly but ended as a contender. The team worked hard and made notable progress in individual, and team play throughout the season. They brought home to Myers the championship trophy from the Medicine Hat Junior Varsity Basketball Tournament; and, by midseason, the Junior Rebels were competing for a top four-spot in the league. The team had many games that were decided by three or less points, which always made the games exciting to watch. Of these games, the Junior Rebels had a one-point loss to the eventual league tournament champions, L.C.I.; and against the eventual league tournament champions, Medicine Hat, the team suffered losses of only one and two points in regular season play. If you were to ask any one of our students, past or present, they would all answer W.R. Myers is the art of fun. Myers school spirit and loyalty always shines through on our annual Fun Day at the park. The grades compete against one another in a medley of fast-paced events ranging from the “Ghetto Van Cram” to the true test of inferiority, “War Games”, and even included a giant water fight to end the annual episode. The day was dedicated to our bold football team, but that didn’t mean they were the only ones having a blast. The Grade 12’s swept the days’ events and won the school flag which is a most prestigious event. Participation was great from all ends. The Grade 9’s were naturally a bit shy but soon got into the swing of things just in time to give the higher grades a run for their money in the final events. All-in-all, everyone, staff and students alike, will leave Myer’s knowing that the true “Art of Fun” is not a picture, object or skill, but a feeling of common bonding and pride like the school spirit that thrives at Myers. 8 These pages are dedicated to the students of W.R. Myers for without them there would be no student life. Student life means different things to different people. To some, it is sneeking down to the cafeteria to grab a quick snack, while to others it’s sleeping on the student couch during spare time. Whatever it is, it’s become an important part of every school day. It gives W.R. Myers character so as we look back at our years here we will have more to remember than tests and essays. We will also remember that this was the year we made student life into “A Work of Art”. It was a great success and was the first dance at Myers to include Grade 9 and the new “no shoes” policy. This regulation was installed because the gym floor was recently refinished. Therefore, it was nick-named the Barefoot Bash. The Hallowe’en dance was also a lot of fun for the students and many of them dressed up. Our music and D.J. for the dances at Myers are supplied by Evan How. He brings in his own system and helps make our dances the big successes they are. Besides Myers, Grassy Lake, Vauxhall, Hays, and Enchant were invited. Coats were checked in at the door and we even got to keep our shoes on. A live band, The Peace Dogs, was hired from Calgary. The music was loud and heavy. Some appreciated that more than others. While we were in our silks and tuxes, they wore ripped jeans and spandex. For only the second time ever, we hosted the 3A PROVINCIAL boys volleyball championships. Any time a school hosts a provincial championship of any kind, it provides the school with a tremendous opportunity to showcase its student spirit, staff involvement and school team expertise. We had that opportunity at this event and exhibited, in all areas, a school that we can be proud of. Our tournament chairman is a former staff member and a dynamic individual, Ms. Debbie Sargeant. Debbie is an organizer extraordinaire, and the success of the tournament was due in large part to her super effort. Our staff got involved in the logistics of such a major undertaking right down to the last person. They were enthusiastic, supportive, and showed a pride in our school that only good staffs can demonstrate. They were also a significant reason why this event was such a success. Our student body supported the tournament and our team for the week leading up to and the days of the Provincial. They came in numbers, made more noise than I’ve heard at a volleyball match in this school in a long time, and were a major reason why I felt so satisfied along with my players at the end of the tournament. Our team came to play this weekend. They played their best ball in 3 years, of what was for all of them, their graduation year. They played in the best matches of the tournament, and provided every team they played with their toughest competition. The final results were as follows: Round Robin: First: Second: Semi-Finals: Pool A Myers High School Drumheller Pool B Fort McMurray Wetaskiwin Wetaskiwin 2, Myers 1 Drumheller 2, Fort McMurray 0 Bronze Medal Match: Myers 2, Fort McMurray 0 Gold Medal Match: Wetaskiwin 2, Drumheller 0 I have coached volleyball at Myers for 16 years, and this Provincial ranks as one of the best, if not THE best of them all, due in no small part to the great support from everyone from fans to committee members. Provincials is a prestigious event, and we pulled it off with flying colours. From Top to Bottom: Our Myers Provincial Volleyball team. Wetaskiwin, the 1st place team. Any work of art is a skilled composition filled with color, brilliance, vitality, and a splash of the unexpected. At Myers you’ll find that everyday and each activity is filled with all sorts of flare and energy. We as editors hope you appreciate these elements and reflect upon them. We would like to extend our appreciation to Jim Saunders, Brandon Bly, Dave Shritt, and all members of the Journalism class for making this year “A Work of Art.” A^^U^^ 16 CLU0S organisationsI found it a great pleasure to be president of the Students’ Council. We found it to be a big responsibility to fulfill our commitment to the students. We had good times and some heated arguments. All of our members did a terrific job, most of whom donated upwards of 50 hours of their time to do voluntary fund raising and community service. This year was our thirty-seventh anniversary; and, thanks to the great support from members and advisors, we made it a success. 19 MYERS MUSIC The 1990-1991 year was an exciting year for the W.R. Myers Music Program. The Myers Music Association purchased 45,000 in new equipment. This new equipment replaced old and damaged equipment that was used by the program. This year also saw the band tour California during the Easter break. The band performed at Disneyland and the Disneyland Hotel as guests of the Disney Corporation. They also appeared at Pasedana High School as guests of their Music Department. These arc but a few of the many appearances by the group. W.R. It was decided that this year’s celebration would encompass two days: a senior dinner and dance on May 24 and a cap and gown ceremony on June 26, after the last exam. These events both required the committee to meet once a week to make decisions on a variety of things such theme, music, invitations, decorations, etc. All of this takes time, patience and commitment. We would like to thank the graduating class for their support in the new format and wish next year’s committee good luck. We went to Medicine Hat to a three-school conference to get our ideas. We then had our meetings. We had many ideas proposed for the year; however, only a few were carried out. We had a starve-a-thon on January 18-19 to raise money. We gave certificates to Checkstop to give to people who were caught not drinking and driving. We also entered a float in the parade. There were many displays present including those of various groups and individuals. An industrial arts class had a display and a Book Fair was present in which anyone could adopt a book and donate it to the W.R. Myers Library. Some of the students from Art classes 10, 20, and 30 had art for sale. No matter what your taste in art, you were bound to find it among the many different pieces of work done by these students. A talent show ranged from a “Salute to the Troops” dance (Sharia Nishida, Lisa Smith, Larissa Collett and Kim Hart) to vocal selections (Becki Gough and Angela Jensen) to an acting solo from Thornton Wilder (Darcea Murphy). Also displaying their talents were Cara Garrett with an oral interpretation, Joseph Anderson on the piano, and Kent Pryor with a clarinet solo. As incentive to attend the art show, a $100 door prize was offered to students who attended. Patricia Wright was the lucky winner of the evening. This season the team finished in second place in the Tier IH division of the Southern Alberta High School Football League. The team’s season was highlighted by victories over St. Mary’s, Kate Andrews, and High River, as well as a close loss to Winston Churchill. In playoff’s, the Rebels soundly defeated St. Mary’s again before losing a hard fought game to Raymond in the league’s Tier III final. Raymond, as well as Cardston, and L.C.I., went on from the league to win provincial championships in their respective tiers. Another highlight for the team was the selection of Jeff Thurston as a league all-star at the defensive tackle position. Jeff also won an honorable mention on offensive line along with Jared Bly (defensive back), Ryan Buck (running back and linebacker), and Randy Oliver (receiver). Throughout the season, the Rebels continued to improve and to mature with experience. Many key roles were played by returning players and it appears the Rebels will be back in contention next year. This year’s team also sees the graduation of many players whose leadership and examples will be missed. Joining the coaching staff this year was Wayne Pallett. The team started out with several wins over their league opponents but, halfway through the season, were met with a number of defeats. Despite the downs, the girls continued to improve their skills and maintain their enthusiasm. Because of their consistent efforts, they had more victories at the end of the season. Several of the Grade 9 and 10 players also played on the senior team. The seniors had a very busy schedule. Like the juniors, the seniors practiced every day from the end of August to the beginning of November. Besides playing in league games every Tuesday, the team competed in tournaments every weekend throughout the season. Although the girls competed well in tournaments, they never placed first. With regard to the zone playoffs in Cardston, the team came close to defeating McCoy High School from Medicine Hat in the semi-finals; McCoy ended up going to provincials. The senior team will be losing five players since they will be graduating. We coaches and the remaining players wish these people all the best. Those who will be coming back should form a strong base for next year’s team. FROM THE TOP . . MYERS VOLLEYBALL B STRAIGHT Back Row: Coach Del Cleland. The seven players that constituted this year’s team were what remained of the 12 players that started in Grade 9. Making this team competitive has not been easy; they are an odd combination of talent and mental attitude, but the team all stuck it out. Our team became consistent, focused, and it all paid off in a provincial bronze medal. I remember walking in with the team at the opening ceremonies in front of our own school; the frustration of our first game; beating Drumheller in a two-hour match; the tightest game the team played during the semis against Wetaskiwin; re-grouping to easily win against Fort McMurray for the bronze; and hearing about all the fun the team had at the post-season party. Competitive athletics teaches you a lot about yourself, whether you know it or not. It's easy to believe that the rich and famous are born well...rich and famous. Not so! On the way to being famous...Gwen Stefani worked at Dairy Queen, Madonna was fired from Dunkin' Donuts, Brad Pitt handed out flyers wearing a chicken suit for El Polio Loco, Rachel McAdams was a server at McDonald's and Beyonce was swept up hair in her mother's salon. There are jobs you will have before you 'make it' too. Some you will enjoy. And some - not so much. On my way to becoming a teacher I was a waiter, a landscaper, a tree planter, and a bartender. Some of these jobs I liked and some I hated. But ALL of these jobs brought me to the profession I love and shaped who I have become. At W.R. Myers High School we are proud of being a school where every student can find an avenue for success and in being part of a community where everyone in the Rebel family strives to find the best in themselves and others. As Christian Larson said, "Believe in yourself and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle." Remember that you are the star of your own life and that, with hard work, your dreams will become reality! Take care, Ken Pon Principal Wow! What a year! I chose "REBEL RESILIENCE" as the yearbook theme this year as I thought it was rather fitting given our current 'COVID-1 9' situation. Some of you are already VERY RESILIENT, while others may feel like you are not. One thing is for sure - you can always WORK on becoming MORE resilient. Here are 10 ways you can work on becoming more resilient: Have the courage to be imperfect Take time for yourself Sign up for that course, join that club Be active every day in as many ways as you can Spend time with people who make you feel good Laugh out loud each day Invite your neighbor (friend) over for a cup of tea (chat) Do one thing now that you've been putting off Focus more on things you can control Remember, this too shall pass (~https://wayahead.org.au/get-the-facts/building-resilience/) Thank you to all those who gave me a big smile (or at least didn't run away) when I put the camera in front of your face! I apologize to those teams I missed getting photos of (that actually had the opportunity to play). Because this year is unlike any other, I also decided to change up the color scheme from the traditional red/black/yellow! I would love some feedback on this decision (love it/dislike it etc). A huge shout-out to a stellar group of grade 9's who helped me with the yearbook in June (Madisen and Bryden O'Connor, Kiernan Gyepesi, Will Evanson, Madison Reid, Heston Bevans and Allen Clements). Thank you specifically to Bryden O'Connor for creating the color graphic used throughout the yearbook. Some of the quotes found through out the yearbook were from the survey you filled out in the spring, which in, most cases, does not have the author information and therefore simply states the grade level the quote came from. All other quotes with Author Unknown" were found online and in most cases didn't have any author information either. In any case, my hope is that they will either put a smile on your face, make you go 'hmm' or possibly even take time to pause and reflect on the message being shared. But very thankfully, and in true Rebel Spirit, we made the most of the situation and were able to organize and provide our student-athletes with a few opportunities to participate in sport. The Rebels made teams and practiced as much as they possibly could in football, volleyball, cross-country, golf, basketball, and curling. Unfortunately, a few of our traditional sports were not able to get off the ground in the Spring, but hopefully that will only fuel the fire of the up and coming athletes for next season! We want to give a big thanks to all those student-athletes and coaches who committed to one or more of our teams during these tough, unprecedented circumstances, and a special shout out to all the Grade 1 2 student-athletes for all of their years of dedication to High School Sport! Myers Concert and Stage Bands were unable to perform this year due to COVID, but we were lucky enough to still be able to play our instruments. Vince Gassi, a composer from Toronto, was commissioned by the W.R. Myers Band Parent Association to write a piece for the Concert Band. The band students met with Mr. Gassi via Zoom in October to talk to him about the piece and the writing process. He completed the piece for us in January and we began working on it. Again the band students met with Mr. Gassi on Zoom for him to listen to us play and give feedback. But unfortunately due to the COVID restrictions, we were unable to premier the piece. Hopefully, next year we will be able to play Tomorrow Shines Soon. Our yearbook is a road map for 1990 of the things we accomplished and the good times we’ve had. Rich Nagai and Scott Urano (top left) travel in style as they head out on foot. Kim Jespersen, Norma Powell, Rhonda Renner, and Tammy Rombough seem to be saying “bottoms up”, and Brad McCarty is exiled. Hopefully, Myers students will continue to find good times and succeed as they follow the roads life leads them down. While we were gone for 10 days we visited Leningrad, Moscow and Helsinski, Finland. We spent 4 days in Leningrad where we saw the Peter-Paul Cathedral, the Winter Palace and the Hermitage Museum. We even saw a Russian Circus. From there we took a 9-hour train ride across to Moscow, home of the world’s largest McDonald’s. It only took us a half hour to wait to get in and the line up was only a few blocks long. While in Moscow for 3 very full days, we visited Red Square, the Kremlin and many cathedrals. We also went to the New - Maidens Nunnery and the Bolshoi Ballet. Many times we had to take the Metro (subway) back to our hotel, and it’s true what they say about it. It is the cleanest and the most beautiful subway around, made with marble archways and tiled walls and floors. Our last night was spent in Helsinski, Finland. We were only there for a short time but it’s where we had our best meal. We went to Pizza Hut. - Kyla Wyatt What I liked most about the trip was the people we met. I met people from Britain, Switzerland, Ireland, Sweden, Germany, U.S.S.R. and all over the U.S. We toured with a group of students from Delaware. Each and every student proceeds to the Taber Provincial Park where a free lunch is served by the members of Student Council. As the Grade 10 and 11 students enjoy the sun and fresh air, the seniors take part in a group picture. Following the lunch, all students are divided into their respective grades to compete in various activities (van cram, water brigade, Indian wrestling, beachball volleyball). The many performances of the Concert Band included a fall concert and a music festival in Lethbridge, in which we received a “2” (excellent) rating. The band finished off its year of hard work with a very successful performance at the International Concert held in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan. There they placed third among twelve bands. This group also organizes the sale of oranges which is the main source of fund raising. All of this takes a great deal of time, patience, and commitment. We would like to thank the graduating class for their support and wish next year’s committee good luck. 22 W.R. The Rebels also attended a tournament in Edmonton at the Archbishop O’Leary High School where they played six games of 20 minutes each. The regular season began with a loss to L.C.l. on September 6. On September 15 and September 22 the Rebels lost two close games to Cardston and Winston Churchill respectively. On September 29, the Rebels dealt a loss to the Raymond Comets. On October 5, the Rebels handed out their first shutout against St. Mary’s Warriors. The winning streak was not to continue, as on October 13 the Rebels lost to Catholic Central of Lethbridge, 6-0. However, the team was soon to redeem themselves by defeating Kate Andrews on October 20. Then came the test of strength: the playoffs. The Rebels hoped for a repeat performance as they had to face the Raymond Comets again. The Rebels defeated Raymond Comets by 1 point. The Rebels then defeated the Black Diamond Drillers by 1 point and the McCoy Colts by 6 points. As the team began to realize it was possible to be provincial champs, so did the school and everyone turned out for the final game only to watch the Rebels fall 6 inches short of winning the Provincial Championship by being defeated by the Rebels of Rocky Mountain House. 24 Coach D.C. We did turn our season around from the previous year indicated by the results. However, we failed to achieve some personal goals, which will mean we will have to work extra hard next year to make up for that. As a team, we failed to become a “team”. A whole bunch of “individuals” got together this year to play volleyball. Each player had only one major consideration -- himself. You can’t win the big ones with that attitude, and we didn’t. We had the talent to win but not the mental maturity. This is why we didn’t achieve our goals. If we mature mentally in the 1990 season, we will be one of the best 3A teams in the province. If we don’t, the year will be a long and fruitless one. Myers High School will host the 3A provincials in 1990 and I hope that our team to a man will be looking for a provincial win in their graduating year. We defeated our cross-town rivals from St. Mary’s in the last league match of the year, leaving the Saints in a four-way tie for second place. Allison Schneider was chosen as a league all-star. In the post-season tournament we went 6 and 2 in our pool and defeated Winston Churchill in the semi-finals, before bowing to L.C.I. in the championship final, two games to one. This included a second and a third place finish at the two most prestigious basketball tournaments in the province. The team was ranked as high as sixth in the province at the 4A level. Given the school size, this is a fantastic indicator of the level of “hoops” played here. The squad won the school’s first-ever league championship. The league scoring champion was Grade 10 student Tim Roll-ingson, he also received a first team league all-star and all-star recognition in the Sugar Bowl and Tri-Prov. Tom Anderson received all-star recognition in the Sugar Bowl as well. Captain Rob Oliver is the coach’s choice for team M.V.P., though, with his outstanding, courageous efforts game in and game out. Tim Rollingson, Coach. With skilled players and a keen work-ethic, the Junior Varsity team managed to have an 8-11 win/ loss record and finished in 5th place in the Junior league. Jared Bly provided leadership and guided Randy Oliver to key shots. Brian Jensen worked hard, while Jason Pack began to show the skills he is capable of. Ian Harris grabbed key rebounds and provided muscle for the team under the hoop. Cory Nelson helped immensely, while Rob Anderson and Ryan Harris assisted in ballhandling duties and proved they could compete when asked. Brandon Bly and Jonathon Bennett improved throughout the year and relieved the front line. Each player demonstrated drive, determination and good sportsmanship throughout the year. W.R. Myers can be proud of the responsible manner of these young men in this past year. Coach Jim Lust It’s mine!! (Jonathon Bennett and Brian Jensen) I'm here for ya, Grouse. O is ever onward? and onward we will go... M is what we all can achieve? a mature outlook on life...Dedication This term is one that Mr. Frank Semaka, our vice-principal, will always remember. He was honored this school year by a special day dedicated to him. This year also, he received the Centennial Medal in recognition of his dedication to the teaching profession. These honors, however, were long overdue. All Myer's students have long recognized his great contribution to education and their lives. Working through 25 graduations and hundreds of students is his greatest fame. But as well as these things, often most remembered are the small things which show the feelings and energies that his pupils can acknowledge. What other teacher could handle detention duties for as long a duration with the only complaint of the large number of students who perhaps sometimes fail to appear? Who else could liven up the lecture with an occasional story, or an explanation of poker or a sour joke? No student who has ever had the experience of being in any of his classes can ever forget his style, personality, and wit. The little recognition-little in the light of his achievements and contributions-that Mr. Semaka has received-will always be foremost in his memories. But may he always delight in the memories of his many students and have the satisfaction of knowing that, although we do not often show it, we are truly grateful to him for the tremendous influence he has had on our lives. It is with great sincerity that we say, "We're proud of you, Mr. Semaka. " Dawn ’68 Staff Acknowledgements The staff of Dawn '68 gratefully acknowledges the assistance and support of: Mr. Baldwin, our advisor, and the W. R. Myers faculty and staff; Mr. Geraghty's Period 5 English 20 class who eagerly sacrificed their English period to help out when a deadline had to be met; Mr. Brownbill, who patiently toted his camera literally up, down, and around the school for us; Mr. Lawson, Charles Enman, and the Photo Club for the many fine pictures which are an invaluable part of the yearbook; the many anonymous students who, though not officially staff members, were always willing to give any assistance; and, all those who, in any way, have contributed to the Dawn '68. MAY YOU BE PROUD OF YOUR EFFORTS ! Executive: Phillip Peterson, Adv. Man. ; Terry Holman, Bus. Man. ; Susan Hattori, Asst. Ed. ; Linda Fong, Ed. ; Brenda Donick, Asst. Ed. ; Burton Conrad, Layout. Also: Linda Wall, Co-Layout; Gwenne Halma, Sec. ; Valeen Jensen, Art. Editorial 1 This year's edition of The Dawn is unlike any previous one in content and concept. The Dawn '68 has been an experiment, a challenging, exciting and satisfying experiment. In an effort to present more "action" we have tried to dispense with as many as possible of the traditional still group pictures and dull club reports often borrowed from previous years. In their place, we have experimented with new, varied group poses, unique layout techniques, more interesting copy ( reports ) and new materials. We are aware that not all of our revolutionary ideas will be approved of. However, it is our hope that those who are dissatisfied will support the next staff with their suggestions and assistance. Like any experiment, the Dawn '68 has required an extraordinary amount of time and tedious effort. A common comment among our staff, none of whom had had any previous experience with the production of a yearbook, was, "I never realized there was so much work involved!" The yearbook is thus the efforts of many; my thanks are extended to all those responsible. It is when we view the actual published product, instead of a paraphernalia of assorted pictures, bits of typing, dummy pages, and layout mats, that our efforts become a worthwhile experience. Our experiment will be justified and deemed successful if the Dawn '68 gives you much to reminisce of this school year. Linda Fong ( Editor ) Taber Division School Board STANDING: M. Smith, H. Administration Faculty Staff Mr. Semaka, Vice-Principal; Mr. George, Principal; Mr. Francis, Vice-Principal. Administration - "The Top Three" These three gentlemen have been entrusted with the awesome task of guiding the education of the eight hundred not-so-studious pupils of Myers. Fulfilling their duties efficiently, they hold the respect of all. Thank you, Mr. George, Mr. Semaka, and Mr. Francis for your devoted, untiring efforts and for the interest shown in each one of us . . . you have truly added much to our memories of high school! Congratulations to Linda Fong and her committee for the long hours of work and planning that have resulted in this fine edition of '68 Dawn. A real effort has been made to make this yearbook unique. Preserved between its covers is the history of a year at Myers School. In addition to the pictures of all the students- the pictures of the activities ranging from initiation to graduation are a storehouse of memories. The publishing of this yearbook is truly a worthwhile venture. I would like to share with all the readers of this Yearbook a definition of education. Education is not a thing or a place; it is a process. Education is the process of producing a person who is publicly useful and privately happy. Education is not to be confused with attendance at school. Attendance may be necessary but it does not guarantee an education. Education is the spark of insight into a problem, it is the revealing of relationships between events, it is the appreciation of the struggle of minds that has provided us with the tremendous fund of knowledge that is now ours. Education is listening to the spoken word and reading the written word; it is taking the ideas of others, analyzing and sifting them, and coming up with a conclusion or generalization of one's own. Education is learning to accept responsibility for one's own actions whether that action be lack of preparation for an exam, or whether that action be hookey playing-both have consequences that are the responsibility of the doer. Education is probing the internal organs of a preserved frog, it is developing a skill of the basketball floor, it is polishing and refining an essay, it is making a painting come to life, it is struggling with a complex problem. Thus, education is a many faceted diamond, with each facet requiring the effort of the learner to polish it to brilliance. Education is obtained by those who work for it. I believe that the facilities, program and staff at Myers school are among the best to be found in Alberta. May I urge all who have the opportunity to take full advantage of the education available here. James L. George ( Principal ) into Tomorrows Mrs. M. Allen-P. E. Mr. R. Anderson-Sc. , Math Mr. A. SCHOLARSHIP $25. 00 to the outstanding Grade 12 commercial student - Coralie Arnett Class ’68 History Bette Jo Hamman We, the graduating class of '68, were born smack in the middle of the 20th century. To be alive in such an age. With every year a lightning Page. Turned in the world's great wonder book. Whereas the learning nations look. When men speak strong for brotherhood; For peace and universal good. We are the product of the years which passed by fast and furious in a changing world following World War II, we were part of the twist, the Beatles, color television, jet propulsion, Canada's Centennial, the space era, the New Math, go-go dancers and the mini-skirt. Think of that glorious golden morning of September, 1956, Brave mothers of Dr. Hamman, Central, Barnwell, Kinniburgh, and the L. T. Westlake districts clasped the eager ones tightly by the hand as the little rascals skipped along, anticipating the grand adventure of school. With scrubbed faces and toothless smiles, we took the first step toward the future which so hopefully belonged to us. It was a new and very different world. We entered timidly, because it was a world of faces we did not know. It was our secret fear that the teacher would expect us to read and write on the first day. We had shy fears of having to go to the bathroom and not wanting to ask. But after the first week, school was a place of laughter, scuffling feet, whispers, and old friends. Listening intently, we ventured through the magic doors of storylands. Then joy burst upon us as we began to understand, following directions, and thinking for ourselves. We rested our little heads on our desks and peeked, squirmed, and suppressed our giggles, for the minutes of rest seemed so endless. During elementary school, we blessed the relief of recess as we ran, jumped, and shouted after being subdued for over an hour. We remember the refreshing coolness of the drinking fountain water; the good smell of fresh air; and the freedom in games of baseball. We learned to accept criticism when we did something wrong. In 1962, we, of different schools met on a common stamping ground in Junior High. We were together--our country cousins of Kinniburgh, the sophisticated ones of Central, the intellectuals of Dr. Hamman, and the delinquents of L. T. Westlake who played a mean game of football, with the girls as the star quarterbacks. We were all enthusiastic, typical twelve year olds; bursting with energy, often noisy, very talkative, and almost immune to discipline. The halls were our domain. Our lockers were everybody’s lockers; our books belonged to anyone, and we were always in a mad scramble to get to class on time. I'm sure we all remember waving our green slips frantically as we brazenly entered the classroom late again. Detentions became an extracurricular activity where we met our pals at noon hour. Without a doubt, we were little monsters in Junior High. In Autumn, 1965, our happy, carefree schooldays resumed. Barnwell cummuters became part of our happy crowd of teeny boppers. During our high school days, we became more serious as we realized our school demanded the price of discipline, hard work, and patience. Tonight, we fully appreciate to be alive in such an age. To Live to it! To Give to it! Valedictory Bruce Conrad "All who have meditated in the art of governing mankind have been convinced that the fate of empires depends on the education of youth. ” Those were the words of the ancient philosopher, Aristotle, commenting on the vital role of education in his time. In our time, the need for education is much greater. Our happiness, economic success, and well-being in the future depend on the extent of your education. Our technology today is expanding more rapidly than it has ever done before in the history of man. Many new books, especially those on scientific subjects, become out-dated within five to ten years from the time they are published. The use of automation is increasing. Computers speed up the handling of business; run all sorts of establishments from airports to libraries; and are an indispensible aid to scientific research. They are also essential to national defence. The heart of the NORAD defence system is a giant computer which keeps tab on hundreds of flying objects simultaneously and warns of enemy attack. These remarkable devices are the products of the well-trained minds of the past. But many people are needed now, and many more will be needed in the future, just to keep our defense systems up to date. It is indeed true that the fate of impires depends on the education of the youth. We graduands have, for the past twelve years, been learning the facts which will enable us to take our place in the future. We have not been alone in this effort. Many teachers have laboured to give us the knowledge of past centuries. Facts which have been accumulating for hundreds of years are now our personal possessions thanks to their efforts. To our parents we also extend our personal gratitude. They have given us the rather firm encouragement that we have needed at times. Yes, our thanks go to all those who have so painstakingly prepared us for success in the future; a future full of promise. We will be sorry to leave these familiar hallways and classrooms. They have been the scene of so many happy moments, and the backdrop for so many distressing problems. They will remain in our memories forever. Our high school preparation is now complete; we are ready to go our separate ways and face the great challenges that lie ahead. May we forge forward fearlessly and make our lives as successful and enjoyable as our high school days have been. The future and all it holds is waiting. Kilback Each school year brings new challenges to students and staff, requiring fresh approaches to old problems, and a revised perspective on essential goals. We have struggled this year with development of course objectives and evaluation plans, with more weighty final exams, and a different budgetting system. The School Board is holding regular meetings in the various schools, thus enabling members to become more familiar with daily operations. The cafeteria committee, under sponsorship of the senior students council, is continuing to provide an effective and satisfying service to the students and staff. We are anticipating a substantial upgrading of the cafeteria facilities to further improve this function. Our extra-curricular scene has been very exciting and impressive this year, with outstanding accomplishment in sports, the fine arts and other activities. We appreciate all the students, teachers and other persons who have assisted with coaching and supervising various events during the year. Our instructional program, with its breadth of academic and vocational-type courses, need periodic assessment in terms of value to students and congruence with school and community objectives. Again, thanks to our Yearbook Committee and their advisor, Mr. Hart, for another quality production. ^^•■■■•■■■^■■■■■■■••HMrtMMMMHMIHM^_ __^____i___-_^_i—_— 67 Science: L. to R: Del Cleland, Rex Anderson, Dale Lusk, Dick Robinson, and Ken Lawson. Myers students participated in the Yearbook survey. This year was different, however, as only Sr. High students were involved with the survey. Quite a few surprising facts and opinions surface. For example, Half of Sr. High students never drive a vehicle to school. Almost half of the students chose “Raiders” as their favorite flick. The second top song was one many of us hadn’t even heard of before. And many said their favorite thing to do on a date was “I'll never tell!”? MOST OF ALL — EMPLOYED?? Are you employed part-time? Years can’t erase the pleasure That the joy of friendship gives; To have an understanding friend Is worth far more than gold. Sandra’s main concerns were always her friends and family and being happy. We will always miss you, Sandra, but we know you’re happy now. With love, All your friends 16 VALEDICTORIAN — lynda callaway The valedictorian for the 1982 graduating class was Lynda Callaway. In her valedictory message, she emphasized the value of friendship. She used the poem “Old Friends and New Friends,” by Joseph Parry, to illustrate her talk. It goes as follows: Make new friends, but keep the old; Those are silver, these are gold. New-made friendships, like new wine, Age will mellow and refine, Friendships that have stood the test — Time and change — are surely best; Brow may wrinkle, hair grow gray; Friendship never knows decay. For ’mid old friends, tried and true, Once more we our youth renew. But old friends, alas! may die; New friends must their place supply; Cherish friendship in your breast — New is good, but old is best; Make new friends, but keep the old; Those are silver, these are gold. 17 Danny Brewin Mark Budd Lynda Callaway Janice Chipman Donna Chow 18 ^Jlie (Sest of ^Jime5 19 Oue memories o wiULd a life time . . The team lost 4 out of the 6 starters due to graduation. The team now consists of 5 rookies and 1 grade 12. The year started out slow with the team only placing 4th in the pre-season tourney held in L.C.I. We then moved on, participating in 2 Medicine Hat tournaments. The 1st was played at Medicine Hat High where we placed 4th. Next, we travelled to McCoy, where we lost out in the semi-finals and placed third. Bow Island was the 1st tournament we won, beating Crescent Heights in the final games. The University of Lethbridge Classic tournament was another good one for us, winning the consolation side. Through out the 3A season, there was one tough team we had to play before we could get into provincials. But, unfortunately, they kept beating us in league play, and it seemed almost hopeless that we could participate in provincials. When the zones were held in Crowsnest, we made it to the finals and were up against Catholic Central (the team sure to win). Again, it seemed almost impossible that we should even have a chance. But with the help of Dennis’ preparation it seemed very possible. There were three games in the championship match, and we won the 1st with the score of 15-11. The next game we, again, were ahead 13-9, but couldn't hold on to it and lost, 13-15. The 3rd and final game was the decision. Though we played past our mental ability, and were neck in neck with them all the way, it slowly slipped out of our hands for a 13-15 final score. Through the year, there was one main factor that we, as a team, relied on to get us through the season. That was our coach, Dennis Fujimagari. He was a very young coach who took on the task of coaching a bunch of noisy girls. We owe this year to him and it wouldn’t have been half as fun as it was without him. Though we never got to thank him in person, we would like to thank him now, in this write-up. He is a special guy to all of us and we hope he’ll be back next season. “Thanks Fuji” 1981 Volleyball Team 1. Jody Parry 2. Lana Rogers 3. Audrey Bullock 4. Sharon Hamilton 5. Pauline Hooge 6. Cara Lee Ireland 7. Connie Gow 8. Dennis Fujimagari (Coach) 9. Rhonda Fergason 36 LZZJ 37 BOYS' VOLLEYBALL Back Row, Left to Right: Brad Anderson, Marshall, Brad Litchfield, Mike Weber, Cam Shield, Del Cleland, coach. Front Row: David Anderson, Brad Robinson, Dick Eto. Missing: Lon Ferguson. Our 1981 volleyball season was, in 2 words, “pretty good.” We lost only one player to graduation from the previous year, which was a complete rebuilding year. As with last year, we were not a tall team, but concentration and defense and another 50,000 stairs produced a team that would jump and play with taller teams. The S.W.A.V.A. league was weak this year, ourselves and Winston Churchill being the only strong teams. The stage for a long-standing rivalry between these 2 teams was set in the preseason tournament when we met in the final. Winston was too much for us, and we lost, but the grudge had begun. One week later, we met again in league play. We crushed them in the first game 15-5, and it looked like revenge was ours, but 4 games later, we lost the 5th game in a best of 5 match. Beating Winston would have to happen another day. At this time, we launched upon our tournament season with a trip to the 3rd Annual Medicine Hat College Tournament. We won this tournament for the second time in 3 years, beating Richmond, Sask, in the final. Victory was short-lived, however, as the best we could do in the next 2 tournaments as Medicine Hat Highschool and Lord Beaverbrook in Calgary was a 3rd place finish in both. We played well, but always made mistakes that cost us in the semi-finals. The following weekend we journeyed to a small tournament in Bow Island, one we had won the previous year. As it turned out, this was to be the low point of our season. We played poorly and finished out of the play-offs. We headed home, dejected, but determined not to have that happen again. Practices all week were hard and serious in preparation for the Annual U. of L. Classic. Being disgraced the previous weekend seemed to be just what we needed, as we cruised through the tournament undefeated, beating Winston Churchill in the final. As it turned out, this was to be the first of 4 tournament wins in a row. The following week we played Winston again in league play. Neither team was sharp, but we were worse; we lost in 4 games. Losing to anyone isn't easy, but losing to Winston was almost unbearable. We would have to wait another day for revenge. The next weekend we travelled to McCoy in Medicine Hat to a tournament we have attended religiously since I have coached at Myers, but had never won. I have had super teams in the past that should have won it, but McCoy always seemed to be our nemesis, so I never counted on winning, which is what we did, going through the tournament with a perfect record in match play. 38 Next on our agenda came the league Post-Season tournament, and our last shot at Winston. We were seeded in opposite pools. Neither team’s stage was set. We had been playing all day in the St. Mary’s gym, and not well at that. We came back to Myers, had our pre-final team meeting, and walked into the Myers gym-home turf. I don’t know why, but something in the atmosphere felt good. The gym was full, hot, sweaty — comfortable. The guys were relaxed, but tense. The rest was history as Myers went on a roll that left Winston wondering what had hit them. We had just put together one of the best two games this group had ever played as a unit and throttled Winston 15-3, 15-3, and leaving no doubt as to who was the best team in Southern Alberta. Zones came up the next weekend. There are only 3-3A schools in Zone 1 and the other 2 have never been strong until this year. Crowsnest Pass has decided to play volleyball. We met the Pass in the final after losing to them in the round robin. We won the first 15-12, lost a barn burner in the second. 18-16, then won the third, 15-11. The match was exciting, and what a zone play-off should be. Nothing left of the season now except the big one — Provincials, this year in Drumheller. We didn’t win, but certainly didn't play poorly. We were in the strong pool, won our first 3 consecutive matches in straight games, than lost to the eventual winner, Edson, putting us in second place, and advancing to the semi-finals against the host, Drumheller. We put them in a shooting gallery the first game, and manhandled them 15-5. In the second we were ahead 8-1 when a cold front moved in. We lost our poise, that game, the next, and the match. I wasn't disappointed, however. How can you be with a team that finished out of the playoffs only once in 10 tournaments, and won 5 of them. Dedication is something you see less and less in today’s youth. Playing is arduous, physically and mentally demanding, and time consuming for both players and coach. But you also know that the rewards are well worth the cost, because you have achieved something you have really earned, and not many things are truly earned in today’s society. To me, coaching is fun because you get to work with people who have the same viewpoint you do with regard to sport, and even though there is a 15-17 year difference in age, they become good friends after 3 years and 2000 hours of working together. So thanks to my friends on the 1981 edition of the Myers Saints. You've made me want to coach another year: MARSHALL KANO, BRAD ANDERSON, DAN BREWIN, MIKE WEBER, LON FERGUSON, NEIL POWELL, BRAD ROBINSON, CAM SHIELDS, DICK ETO, DAVE ANDERSON, AND BRAD (CHOO-CHOO) LITCHFIELD. This year a new sport was introduced into W. R. Myers High — Girls' Flag Football. The team, consisting of some girls from Phys. Ed 10, 20, and 30, was one of the most successful teams in the school. They were the only team to finish their season undefeated. The girls’ team played 4 games against WCHS and LCI. These games were tough, physical, contact football. They were backed by such standouts as Virginia Meyer at quarterback. Shauna Harris at halfback, and Shelly VanCleave at middle linebacker. 4714-53 Street PHONE 223-4344 mi mw m lib. Front Row: Julie Anderson, mgr., Tim Rollingson, coach, Heather Paterson, mgr. This year’s addition of W.R. Myers boys’ basketball had many hi-lites. The team participated in 5 tournaments. They won the Creston tournament by beating Earnest Manning of Calgary 105-62. They finished 2nd in a Medicine Hat tournament and at the St. Mary’s Warriors tournament and were consolation winners in Coaldale. The 5th tournament was the 4A Southern Regional tournament played at the Sport-splex. Although the team was seeded 8th they surprised everyone by finishing 5th and losing a heartbreaking overtime game to Cardston. That game was played in front of 2750 people, many of whom where W.R. Myers students. The team greatly appreciated this. The overall win-loss record for the team was 17 wins, 17 losses. This is greatly improved from the teams first year of 4A competition (3 wins, 29 losses). The team will miss greatly graduating players Brad Anderson, Brent Powell, Marshall Kano, Bruce Gilbertson, Jerry Gardner, and Mike Weber. These players have done an excellent job in helping establish our school in 4A Boys’ basketball. We thank our many fans who supported us faithfully, and we look forward to continuing to provide exciting 4A basketball in our school in future years.
