    Evaluating the impact of declining tsetse fly (Glossina pallidipes) habitat in the Zambezi valley of Zimbabwe

    Tsetse flies transmit trypanosomes that cause Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT) in humans and African Animal Trypanosomiasis (AAT) in animals. Understanding historical trends in the spatial distribution of tsetse fly habitat is necessary for planning vector control measures. The objectives of this study were (i) to test for evidence of any trends in suitable tsetse fly habitat and (ii) to test whether there is an association between trypanosomiasis detected from livestock sampled in dip tanks and local tsetse habitat in the project area. Results indicate a significant decreasing trend in the amount of suitable habitat. There is no significant correlation between trypanosomiasis prevalence rates in cattle and distance from patches of suitable tsetse habitat. The observed low trypanosomiasis prevalence and the lack of dependence on suitable tsetse fly habitat can be explained by the observed decreases in suitable tsetse habitat, which themselves are due to expansion of settlement and agriculture in North Western Zimbabwe.</p

Dear Amon: I know of your son being among the missing, and I know how human we as people are. If he is gone dear please try and say (and its hard to say too) "Not my will but thine be done Oh Lord." You have had an income with big interest from that son, and that interest was compound his sweet and loving life you have enjoyed through his few years was the source from which you drew from. If God has called him for something higher you, I know, won't question Him for He is the only one who can say "Well done thou faithful." I am going to pray for you every day and Amon I'm going to pray as He taught us to pray, "Our Father." With tender love and hoping and praying that boy will be among those taken prisoner, and that is hard for us too.     The Spatial Distribution of Elephants (loxodonta Africana) in Relation to the Spatial Heterogeneity of Vegetation Cover in a Southern African Agricultural Landscape

    Paper presented at the Annual Conference of the Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society (RSPSoc) Scales and Dynamics in Observing the Environment CDROM 10-12 September 2003, The University of Nottingham, UK.,We tested whether and how the probability of African elephant (Loxodonta Africana) presence was related to spatial heterogeneity of vegetation cover and in the agricultural landscape of the Sebungwe region in northwestern Zimbabwe in the early 1980s and early 1990s. We also tested to whether and how spatial changes in probability of elephant presence were related to changes in spatial heterogeneity the Sebungwe region between the abovementioned dates. A novel perspective was used to characterise spatial heterogeneity based on intensity (i.e. maximum variance in vegetation cover) and dominant scale (i.e. patch size at which intensity is manifested) while vegetation cover was estimated from a remotely sensed normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) based on Landsat TM satellite imagery. The results indicated that the probability of elephant presence could be predicted reliably using intensity and dominant scale of spatial heterogeneity. Both the intensity and dominant scale of spatial heterogeneity explained 80 % and 93 % of the variance of the probability of elephant presence in the early 1980s and early 1990s respectively. The changes in the intensity and dominant scale of spatial heterogeneity predicted 89 % of the variance of the change in elephant presence between the 1980s and 1990s. The results of this study imply that if elephants are to be conserved in agricultural landscapes, it is important that wildlife management strategies aimed at sustaining wildlife species in agricultural landscapes take into account the spatial heterogeneity of vegetation cover, with particular attention to the dominant scale and intensity of spatial heterogeneity. In addition, the results imply the dominant scale and intensity perspective to the characterisation of spatial heterogeneity may improve the prediction of ecological patterns in the landscape such as determining the spatial distribution of wildlife species

    Loteprednol etabonate ophthalmic suspension 0.5 %: efficacy and safety for postoperative anti-inflammatory use

    Topical corticosteroids are routinely used as postoperative ocular anti-inflammatory drugs; however, adverse effects such as increased intraocular pressure (IOP) are observed with their use. While older corticosteroids such as dexamethasone and prednisolone acetate offer good anti-inflammatory efficacy, clinically significant increases in IOP (â¥10 mmHg) are often associated with their use. Loteprednol etabonate, a novel C-20 ester-based corticosteroid, was retrometabolically designed to offer potent anti-inflammatory efficacy but with decreased impact on IOP. After exerting its therapeutic effects on the site of action, loteprednol etabonate is rapidly converted to inactive metabolites, resulting in fewer adverse effects. Randomized controlled studies have demonstrated the clinical efficacy and safety of loteprednol etabonate ophthalmic suspension 0.5 % for the treatment of postoperative inflammation in post-cataract patients with few patients, if any, exhibiting clinically significant increases (â¥10 mmHg) in IOP. Furthermore, safety studies demonstrated a minimal effect of loteprednol etabonate on IOP with long-term use or in steroid responders with a much lower propensity to increase IOP relative to prednisolone acetate or dexamethasone. The anti-inflammatory treatment effect of loteprednol etabonate appears to be similar to that of rimexolone and difluprednate with less impact on IOP compared to difluprednate, although confirmatory comparative studies are needed. The available clinical data suggest that loteprednol etabonate is an efficacious and safe corticosteroid for the treatment of postoperative inflammation. © 2012 The Author(s)
