    Contemporary Art in Japan and Cuteness in Japanese Popular Culture

    This thesis is an art historical study focussing on contemporary Japan, and in particular the artists Murakami TakashL Mori Mariko, Aida Makoto, and Nara Yoshitomo. These artists represent a generation of artists born in the 1960s who use popular culture to their own ends. From the seminal exhibition 'Tokyo Pop' at Hiratsuka Museum of Art in 1996 which included all four artists, to Murakami's group exhibition 'Little Boy: The Arts of Japan's Exploding Subculture' which opened in April 2005, central to my research is an exploration of contemporary art's engagement with the pervasiveness of cuteness in Japanese culture. Including key secondary material, which recognises cuteness as not merely something trivial but involving power play and gender role issues, this thesis undertakes an interdisciplinary analysis of cuteness in contemporary Japanese popular culture, and examines howcontemporary Japanese artists have responded, providing original research through interviews with Aida Makoto, Mori Mariko and Murakami Takashi. Themes examined include the deconstruction of the high and low in contemporary art; sh6jo (girl) culture and cuteness; the relation of cuteness and the erotic; the transformation of cuteness into the grotesque; cuteness and nostalgia; and virtual cuteness in Japanese science fiction animation, and computer games. Holotype: ♂ (EUMJ), “[Taiwan] Dahanshan (Mt.)/ Alt. ca. 1,500m / Chunri Township/ Pingtung County/ 30–31. III, 2012 / J. Yamasako leg.” [locality name also written by Chinese character]. Paratypes: 1 ♂ (EUMJ), same locality as holotype, 11–12. IV. 2012, N. Ohbayashi leg.; 1 ♀ (EUMJ), same data; 1 ♂ (EUMJ), Mt. Xinan-shan, Alt. ca. 1,600m, Taoyuan Township, Kaohsiung, 20–30. III. 2012, N. Ohbayashi leg.; 2 ♂♂ 2 ♀♀ (EUMJ), same data as holotype. Type locality. Mt. Dahan-shan, Chunrih Township, Pingtung County, Taiwan. Diagnosis. This species is similar to A. choui, but easily distinguishable by the following characteristics: antennae and legs entirely yellowish orange, pterothoraces brownish black, and surrounding parts of elytral suture milky white; pygidial struts straight apically, spicular fork lacking spicular lobes; fully inflated phallus forming a significantly acute angle toward the tegmen; phallobasic apodeme elongate; phallic plates thicker. Additional description. Male (n = 5, Fig. 2 B): Antennomeres 4 to 6 weakly serrate, gradually shortened toward apical segments; 7 th to 10 th serrate; 7 th and 8 th as wide as length; 9 th and 10 th wider than long. Aedeagus in fully inflated condition (Fig. 6 I) significantly and acutely curved at the base of CM in lateral view; CM cylindrically swollen, slightly dilated basally; phallus cylindrically swollen in basal half, thence tapered apically. Phallic ventral membrane (Fig. 6 J) with a linear median sclerite. Female (n = 3): Pygidium (Fig. 7 G) trapezoidal; pygidial struts stout, short. Eighth sternite (Fig. 7 H) with apical margin incised at middle. Distribution.     Rapid method for plasmid DNA recombination (Murakami-system)

    DNA recombination is a useful technology for cloning and subsequent functional analysis, while standard techniques for plasmid DNA recombination have remained unchanged. In the present study, we introduced rapid method for plasmid DNA recombination, which we named “Murakami-system”, to complete the experiments in under 33 h. For this purpose, we selected the following: PCR amplification with 25 cycles and E. coli strain with rapid growth (incubation time of 6–8 h). In addition, we selected rapid plasmid DNA purification (mini-prep; ∼10 min) and rapid restriction enzyme incubation (20 min). This recombination system enabled rapid plasmid DNA recombination within 24–33 h, which could be useful in various fields. We also established a 1-day method for competent cell preparation.     Bakalaura darbs „H. Murakami tradīcijas D. Belova daiļradē” ir veltīts pētījumam par japāņu ideju integrāciju krievu literatūrā. Pētījumā tika izmantoti divi romāni: Haruki Murakami „Skarbā brīnumzeme un pasaules gals” un Dmitrija Belova „Divdesmit astoņi”. Darbā tiek atklāta japāņu literatūras ietekme uz krievu māksliniecisku pašapziņu: tiek aplūkotas japāņu un krievu vēsturiskas un literāras attiecības; tiek uzrādīta informācija par autoriem un viņu daiļradi. Abu romānu varoņu, mākslinieciskās telpas, laika un motīvu salīdzinošā analīze ļauj mums spriest par H. Murakami ietekmi uz D. Belova daiļradi.This bachelor degree work “Traditions of H. Murakami in the Creative Work of D. Belov” is devoted to the research of integration of Japanese ideas into the Russian literature studying as examples, two novels “Wonderland without Brakes and the End of the World” by Haruki Murakami and “Twenty eight” by Dmitry Belov. The work reveals the influence of the Japanese literature on the Russian artistic consciousness, it considers Russian-Japanese historical and literary relationships, it gives information about the authors and their creative careers. The comparative analysis of the characters of the novels, the organisation of their artistic space and time, as well as common motives give the right to come to the conclusion about the influence of Haruki Murakami on Dmitry Belov’s creative work

    The work of Haruki Murakami is riven through with references to music. Indeed, music was Murakami’s livelihood before he started writing novels, and the author has written various essays and books about jazz and has published a book-length conversation with classical conductor Seiji Ozawa, and jazz and classical music pervade in Murakami’s fictional works. Popular music, too, provides an important international narrative texture to Murakami’s fiction, yet less critical attention has been paid to this musical indebtedness. The intertexts provided in Murakami’s work by the frequent references to pop songs and bands provide the starting point for a consideration of gender constructions in Murakami; in his work, we discover, musical and gender identities are inextricable and often assume highly affective, mythic roles

This species is easily separated from the other Taiwanese congeners by the following characteristics: elytra black, dully shining, with large milky white markings; antennomeres 3 to 11, subsutural area of elytra, tibiae and tarsi black; pterothoraces in ventral view yellowish orange. This species is very similar to A. yichei, but also distinguished by the following structures in addition to the above external features: pygidial struts curved outward distally, spicular fork with depigmented spicular lobes; fully inflated phallus nearly orthogonal or acute to the tegmen; phallobasic apodeme short, stout; phallic plates thin. Additional description. Male (n = 4, Fig. 2 A): Antennomeres 4 to 6 weakly serrate, gradually shortened toward apical segments; 7 th to 10 th serrate; 7 th and 8 th as wide as long; 9 th and 10 th wider than long.
