North of the South Wales Coalfield, the outcrop of Millstone Grit orlhoquarizites offers a number of swallow holes due to local subsidence of sandstones. The author discards the explanation usually afforded for that phenomenon, i. e. the collapse of underground limestone caves. In her opinion, these swallow holes are the result of a local weathering and loosening of orlhoquariziles brought about by the solution and migration of silica from quartz. As this process requires a hot and damp climate, it cannot have occured later than during the Neogene or early Pleistocene. It is an example, among many others, of the good preservation of pre-glacial landscape in thai area.RÉSUMÉ
Law and society in Welsh medieval literature.
There is more than one way of reading the collection of tales improperly called Mabinogion by Lady Charlotte Guest whose complete English translation of the Red Book of Hergest and of the White Book of Rhydderch was published between 1838 and 1849. In his article the author deals with only two aspects : he shows how some passages, which otherwise would remain misunderstood, can be interpreted in the light of Cyfraith Hywel (the usual designation for Welsh texts and Latin translations of the Welsh Law). Conversely, he shows how these stories illustrate the law texts and confirm their stipulations. Examples are taken only from the Four Branches.
Formation of Tomago sandbeds (N.S.W., Australia) and their use as a source of water.
The 300,000 inhabitants of Newcastle are supplied with 100 million cubic metres of water daily from the Tomago Sandbeds (33° S 153° E) 16 kms or so from the city. These are raised beds on a former sea inlet covering an area of some 200 sq. kms.
The Author discusses the formation of these beds, followed by a description of the water supply
system and pumping plant.
SUMMARY The author describes the legislation relating to abortion in Denmark and England and Wales and deals particularly with the registration of abortions, the results of legislation and the improvements that could be made. In both countries, the registration of legal abortions seems satisfactory. However, it is not yet possible to assess the effect of the recent Danish law. The number of abortions has increased only moderately up to now, even making due allowance for the under enumeration which is likely to remain important, since illegal abortions have not entirely disappeared, especially in England and Wales. In 1972 there were about 15 abortions per 100 births in both countries, a ratio much lower than in Hungaria and Cechoslovakia. Blayo Ch. Measuring routine childhood vaccination coverage in 204 countries and territories, 1980–2019: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2020, Release 1
Background
Measuring routine childhood vaccination is crucial to inform global vaccine policies and programme implementation, and to track progress towards targets set by the Global Vaccine Action Plan (GVAP) and Immunization Agenda 2030. Robust estimates of routine vaccine coverage are needed to identify past successes and persistent vulnerabilities. Drawing from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2020, Release 1, we did a systematic analysis of global, regional, and national vaccine coverage trends using a statistical framework, by vaccine and over time.
Methods
For this analysis we collated 55 326 country-specific, cohort-specific, year-specific, vaccine-specific, and dose-specific observations of routine childhood vaccination coverage between 1980 and 2019. Using spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression, we produced location-specific and year-specific estimates of 11 routine childhood vaccine coverage indicators for 204 countries and territories from 1980 to 2019, adjusting for biases in country-reported data and reflecting reported stockouts and supply disruptions. We analysed global and regional trends in coverage and numbers of zero-dose children (defined as those who never received a diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis [DTP] vaccine dose), progress towards GVAP targets, and the relationship between vaccine coverage and sociodemographic development.
Findings
By 2019, global coverage of third-dose DTP (DTP3; 81·6% [95% uncertainty interval 80·4–82·7]) more than doubled from levels estimated in 1980 (39·9% [37·5–42·1]), as did global coverage of the first-dose measles-containing vaccine (MCV1; from 38·5% [35·4–41·3] in 1980 to 83·6% [82·3–84·8] in 2019). Third-dose polio vaccine (Pol3) coverage also increased, from 42·6% (41·4–44·1) in 1980 to 79·8% (78·4–81·1) in 2019, and global coverage of newer vaccines increased rapidly between 2000 and 2019. The global number of zero-dose children fell by nearly 75% between 1980 and 2019, from 56·8 million (52·6–60·9) to 14·5 million (13·4–15·9). However, over the past decade, global vaccine coverage broadly plateaued; 94 countries and territories recorded decreasing DTP3 coverage since 2010. Only 11 countries and territories were estimated to have reached the national GVAP target of at least 90% coverage for all assessed vaccines in 2019.
Interpretation
After achieving large gains in childhood vaccine coverage worldwide, in much of the world this progress was stalled or reversed from 2010 to 2019. These findings underscore the importance of revisiting routine immunisation strategies and programmatic approaches, recentring service delivery around equity and underserved populations. Strengthening vaccine data and monitoring systems is crucial to these pursuits, now and through to 2030, to ensure that all children have access to, and can benefit from, lifesaving vaccines
Res pretiosa as the church's cultural property: The origin and development of ecclesiastical legislation
Among the rights proclaimed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and by article 60 of the Second Vatican Council's pastoral constitution on the Church in the modern world is the right to culture. Implicit in this right is the duty imposed on the public authority to preserve the tangible evidences of culture, cultural property. This study aims at exploring the origins and development of the notion of res pretiosa and asks if res pretiosa has become the cultural property of the Church in the 1983 Code of Canon Law.
The term cultural property comes from the civil law. It seems first to have appeared in the 1954 Hague Convention and it has become well developed in international law and, more recently, in Anglo-American common law. Chapter 1 traces the development of this law and summarizes the legislation for the preservation of cultural property internationally and in Britain and the United States.
Chapter 2 follows the notion res pretiosa from its locus classicus in the 1468 papal bull Ambitiosae back to its cradle in the Roman law of tutor and ward, where it meant "valuable chattels," and then forward through its adoption in canon law. It also looks at its elaboration there, and its codification in the 1917 Code of Canon Law where it has been narrowed to include only chattels valuable for their artistic, historical or intrinsic worth character and the effects of Vatican II on it.
Chapter 3 looks at the notion of res pretiosa as found in the 1983 Code, the 1990 Eastern Code and in the suppletive documents, especially those of the Pontifical Commission for the Preservation of the Church's Cultural Heritage. The chapter concludes with a look at that agency and the other agencies of the Roman Curia having care of the Church's cultural heritage.
In the conclusion section the author answers the question whether in the 1983 Code res pretiosa has become the cultural property of the Church. He concludes that, while res pretiosa includes cultural property, the term res pretiosa remains broader than the term "cultural property." He also concludes that it would be desirable for the Supreme Legislator to amend the 1983 Latin Code and 1990 Eastern Code so that the terms res pretiosa might be used identically on both and that term and "cultural property" might become coterminous. He also suggests that the Historic Churches Committees developed by the Bishops of England and Wales and their procedures might usefully be adopted in North America to deal with cases of changes proposed to historic churches
