an exploratory study of teachers’ assessment of project work
The overall purpose of this research was to explore English as a Foreign Language (EFL) middle school teachers’ understanding of the purpose and value of assessment within project work, determine the way they assess their pupils’ project work and identify the reasons that led them to their actual assessment practices.
This study takes the form of an exploratory descriptive investigation using a case study to collect data on the population of EFL Middle School teachers in the city of Batna during the 2007-2008 school year (N=399).In the first phase, a questionnaire was developed and distributed to 169 sample teachers selected from the population. In the second phase, qualitative data were generated by in-depth semi-structured interviews with a purposeful sample of 12 teachers. In addition to that, documentary analysis was used as another tool for investigation. Among the documents that were reviewed were a collection of some pupils’ project work samples, teachers’ training books and the official documents sent by the Ministry of Education concerning Middle School Syllabi. This dissertation starts with an introductory chapter in which the researcher states the problem under investigation with the provision of the research questions and hypothesis. The aims, significance and limitations of the study are then highlighted. This chapter ends with a description of the population, the sample and the methodology adopted in this study.
Part One offers an in depth discussion on the teaching of English as a foreign language in Algeria, the implementation of project work as a new method of assessment and some of the main factors that may hinder the use of formative assessment within project work. It comprises three chapters.
Part Two is devoted to the field work and sets out the findings from data used in this study. Additionally, some useful implications and suggestions are proposed based on the research findings in order to help teachers implement assessment for learning more effectively. Results revealed that most EFL teachers involved in this study do understand the purpose and value of assessment within project work but still rely on summative assessment and tend to assess quantity of work rather than the quality of learning. This study also revealed the practical difficulties teachers faced in using formative assessment to feedback children’s learning. Among these are: class and time management, insufficient training, lack of professional development and resistance to change

Academic interest in professional development (PD) of teachers throughout the world is growing for the simple reason that the achievement of quality in education depends to a large extent upon the quality of the teachers in society. Added to this, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the process of teaching considerably with the rise of e-Learning/Teaching. The present study relied on a sequential mixed methods approach, using a questionnaire to the total population of EFL teachers (n=61) at the department of English and Literature in Batna 2 University via their professional e-mails in order to gather quantitative data about their PD challenges and opportunities; and analyzed subsequently with the qualitative data gathered from semi-structured interviews conducted with ten teachers. Results show that although the respondents still hold the idea of traditional PD, 94.9% of them share the view for the necessity of PD to improve their knowledge and skills. Out of 39 respondents, 48.71% were involved in PD activities. However, mentoring and guiding less experienced teachers did not receive the attention required. Findings of this study can inform educators and policymakers of the importance of PD in enhancing teacher quality and improving students’ learning skills. This will hopefully help the future direction of PD programs, particularly PD for EFL teachers in Algeria

Critical Classroom Discourse Analysis of EFL Teachers and Students at the Department of English Language and Literature - Batna 2 University
This study sheds light on how English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers implement linguistic and paralinguistic features in the classroom. It also investigates students’ preferences and awareness related to the aforementioned characteristics. This investigation used a mixed-methods research approach, collecting data from teachers via observation grids and interviews, and from students via questionnaires. Fairclough’s approach to Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) was employed to draw findings about the use of modality, personal pronouns (PPs), teacher talking time (TTT), and teachers’ body language (TBL). The study reveals that the teachers in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Batna 2 had varying approaches to using modal verbs and PPs. Additionally, they tended to establish a casual rapport with their students by dropping formality in their speeches on alternate occasions. Furthermore, they asserted their authority through their body language and the amount of time they spent speaking. Over 50% of students, accordingly, were aware of their teachers’ authority display in the classroom and generally preferred formal and polite communication. This emphasised that it is crucial to consider students’ viewpoints in this area of endeavour as education is not only about teachers and how they provide material, but also about students who reflect any teaching style, method, or technique. Additional investigation is required in the domain of classroom discourse as well as teachers’ use of linguistic and paralinguistic features and their relationship with power and authority to achieve more precise outcomes in the field of English as a foreign language
COVID-19 and Literary Reflections of Isolation: Exploring Society and the Human Psyche in Louise Erdrich’s The Sentence
This study explores the narrative complexities of The Sentence (2021) by Louise Erdrich, situating it within the wide context of pandemic literature to illuminate the societal and personal impacts of the COVID-19 crisis. The paper studies how this novel, set against the chaotic setting of 2020, encapsulates the essence of a global community grappling with unprecedented isolation, grief, and a collective search for resilience, using narrative analysis alongside literary and socio-psychological theories. This research underscores The Sentence as a crucial contemporary artifact that not only reflects but also aids in navigating the complexities of human experience during a crisis. The analysis reveals the skilled interlacing of personal and communal narratives by Erdrich, employing rich symbolism, character development, and cultural reflections to portray the multifaceted impact of the pandemic on society and the human psyche. This paper contributes to the expanding corpus of literary scholarship ( Ounissi, 2022) on pandemic narratives by stressing the significance of the novel as a cultural beacon of hope and understanding in times of profound societal change. Within the pages of the novel, Erdrich provides a perspective from which to view the present condition, urging a reevaluation of the interconnectedness of literature, society, and the enduring human spirit; at the same time, asking how responding to the pandemic has refashioned novel-writing.
Public leisure space: design proposal for a hybrid space in the São Jorge neighborhood
The crisis of public space as a result of changes in forms of consumption and the new model of urbanism where gated communities, shopping centers and similar spaces that are somehow tied to privatization, ends up making public spaces for use and social conviviality decadent, as they limit conditions and possibilities for the use of public space by its inhabitants, that is, urban environments, transformed into merchandise, are increasingly destined for exchange, which means that appropriation and modes of use tend to be subordinated (each increasingly) to the market.
Given the above, the planning of policies for open space and its foundation on social inclusion, community cohesion, health and well-being, guide the preparation of this project.
A project proposal is presented that results from the application of the concepts studied with the objective of promoting a public space of leisure with quality and safety, that intensifies the social relations of the place where it will be implanted and meets the needs of the users.
From references that analyze and criticize the condition of "crisis" of the public space, this work proposes a hybrid experience "of leisure, quality and safety, which intensifies social relations" both for residents of the São Jorge neighborhood and any other group that feel invited to use the proposed object.
Research and analysis converged to the guidelines of the work and from the deepening of the preliminary study, it is carried out as a project proposal presented.

Life-Span Developmental Psychology: Midlife and Later Years in Western and Non-Western Societies
This chapter discusses the basis on which studies have been done on the later years of life in Western and non-Western cultures. It suggests that because Westerners value independence, most research on aging in Western societies has focused on how to help the individual maintain his or her functional independence throughout the life-span. Non-Westerners, on the other hand, value interdependence. Therefore, most research on aging has focused on the availability of social support in later life. But with Westernization influences in non-Western societies, there should be a shift in research efforts in order to accommodate a new understanding of aging and human development that includes the promotion of functional independence in later life
