    Novel sustainable hemp-based composites for application in the building industry: Physical, thermal and mechanical characterization

    In this study, novel hemp-based composite materials, designed for building application as components of a multi-layer wall plug for concrete, steel or wood structures, providing both thermal insulation and physical-mechanical resistance, are presented and characterized. Composite panels were produced by bonding hemp hurds with a novel hybrid organic-inorganic binder. The panels were then characterized in terms of physical-microstructural properties (bulk density, water absorption, swelling in thickness and weight loss after immersion in water, microstructural features by means of scanning electron microscope and stereo optical microscope observation), thermal properties (thermal conductivity, reaction to fire) and mechanical properties (compressive strength, flexural strength, tensile strength, resistance to axial withdrawal of screws). The panels exhibited promising physical, thermal and mechanical characteristics, generally comparable to those of commercially available products. In addition, the novel composites have the advantage of a significantly low environmental impact (thanks to the nature of both the dispersed and the binding phase) and no negative effects on human health (contrary to many commercial materials, responsible for emission of formaldehyde). All things considered, the novel composites seem like very promising materials for application in the building industry. Further tests to assess the physical-mechanical durability of the panels are currently in progress

    For reducing the environmental impact of the building sector, novel sustainable composites have recently been developed, by bonding hemp hurds with a new hybrid organic-inorganic binder. These composites, designed as substitutes for traditional insulating materials or as substitutes for formaldehyde-bonded wood particle boards, exhibit very promising thermal, physical and mechanical properties. To ensure that the panel performance is maintained during the building operation phase, durability needs to be specifically evaluated as well. Therefore, in this study three composite types with low, medium and high density (LD, MD and HD, respectively) were subjected to accelerated ageing and the alterations in their physical-mechanical properties were evaluated. Composite resistance to accelerated ageing is strongly correlated with bulk density. HD composites, the only ones actually designed to be directly exposed to rainfall, exhibited almost negligible decreases in mechanical properties and hence a substantially satisfactory behavior. MD and LD composites, designed to provide thermal insulation and hence to be sheltered by HD panels, were affected to a larger extent by accelerated ageing, which however was definitely more severe than the real exposure conditions of the composites during their service life. Further studies are currently in progress to optimize the composites formulation and physical-mechanical durability

    Many philosophers have propounded a vision of an improved society, what distinguishes Antonio Gramsci is his continuous effort to make it happen by understanding the process in order to put into practice. Gramsci's conviction about the importance of educative development came from both theory and experience. While there has been considerable examination of Gramsci's work in relation to the Prison Notebooks, this study will seek to address a lacuna in Gramsci scholarship. Using Gramsci's philological method, I analyse Gramsci's pre-prison activity; his pre-prison articles and letters, which, together with his letters from prison, formed part of his educative mission. This educative process was necessary, in order to construct a new party which would develop a collective will, collaboratively, with the masses.In this study therefore, I explore the contexts and formative experiences of the first part of his life together with the intellectual sources from which Gramsci developed his later theories, making central hitherto underemphasised connections between them which informed his writing and ideas. I intend to illustrate that Gramsci's underlying purpose in his writing, and political activity, was not only practical, on how to create a new socialist ruling class, but also educative in forming the mindset and values of his comrades. So that in addition to outlining his vision of a new order, he implicitly guided or explicitly explained the processes by which the necessary changes in social relations and moral climate could be made in order to achieve it. Each person had to engage with the values of the new order so that each could contribute to the construction of a new robust state. It was essential to build a hegemony at the most profound level, one which was dependent on collective understandings and a collective will
