No full textThis paper discusses the work of Charles Tomlinson, the British poet described by Andrea Sirotti as an author whose work has received a fair amount of attention in the past twenty years in Italy, but not as
much as it deserves, considering his stature and overall output. Professor Emeritus at Bristol University, critic, translator, world-wide traveler and painter, with a refined mind and a boundless culture, Tomlinson was the recipient of major poetry awards and published more than twenty books of poetry. In the words of Judith P. Saunders, «[u]nsurprisingly, Tomlinson’s life and career reflect the same energetic interest in cross-cultural convergence that infuses his poetry. Travel and residence abroad have played a major role in his development as a poet».
Considering his significance as a contemporary poet whose work encompasses a range of cultures, languages and aesthetic currents, Tomlinson certainly deserves critical attention, but for Italian scholars and
translators there is an additional reason: his close ties to the Italian landscape and his deep and detailed knowledge, knowledged gained quite literally «in the field».
This paper aims to revisit some of the poet’s main motifs that were inspired by his Italian journeys and extended stays in the country, with a threefold objective: firstly, to draw critical attention to Charles Tomlinson’s poetry within the Italian academic world five years after his death; secondly, to stress the cogency of Judith P. Saunders’ critical approach, which postulates the interpretive key of «border»; thirdly, to suggest a reading of Tomlinson’s poem Piazza inspired by the notion of liminality and aporia while investigating his postmodern deconstructive procedures
English as a Lingua Franca and the International Pandemic Discourse: Investigating the BA First-Year Students’ Questionnaire Data Gained at Dept. of Oriental Studies, Sapienza University, Rome
No full textThis article reports on the results of a tailor-made mixed-approach questionnaire (Creswell 2014) inspired by the use of ELF communication occurring between BA first-year students at the Department of Oriental Studies, Sapienza University, Rome, and their international friends during the COVID-19 pandemic (May 2020-June 2022). The rationale behind the research is to acquire, collect and investigate the dominant feelings aroused and evoked during the lockdown due to COVID-19 restrictions, as expressed in the participants’ international exchanges via social media. Starting from the assumption that prolonged periods of isolation and social distancing can create difficult emotional states with a negative impact on mental wellbeing – as well as on learning processes – our goal is to inquire how international students experienced the quarantine and distancing phase sharing their feelings mediated through ELF. As a second step, the focus of our analysis is on the creative use and variation of idioms in ELF written interactions on social media, according to M.-L. Pitzl’s frame of ELF seen as a form of language contact and multilingual creativity (Pitzl 2009; 2012) in the TIGs’ (“Transient International Groups”) condition (Pitzl 2018; 2022). A third vantage point in this study is provided by Kurt Kohn’s “MY English” model (2018; 2020; 2022), through which we observe the empowerment of the ELF competence using linguistic-communicative strategies shaping non-native speaker’s identity in authentic circumstances of communication, resulting in a non-native repertoire. Finally, the data gained are examined integrating the quantitative analysis with the explorative qualitative research for the open-ended questions, investigating the participants’ dominant feelings in relation to the global pandemic conveyed through their ELF communicative resources

Get PDFThis paper revolves around three main axes: the first one regards the connection among languages and cultures which translation always performs, building a bridge of mutual understanding at a deep cognitive level by way of the complex transfer taking place among the agents involved in the process, from one code to another and from one linguacultural universe to a different one: this aspect is supported by theoretical tenets, evoked in the paper, which inspire and forge Translation Studies stances in the present scenario, shaped also by linguistic variables and varieties; the second level is represented by the distinctive case of Jhumpa Lahiri who adopted the Italian language as a chosen alternative form of expression in her authorial production, to the enrichment and completion of her own multifaceted identity; the third view is finally provided by a close textual analysis, from a translational point of view, of selected passages taken from Lahiri’s version of Starnone’s fiction Lacci (Ties), with an envisaged outcome of pedagogical potential and translational application even in the classroom
