An experiment-based module for building quantum mechanics concepts using Mach-Zehnder interferometry
To introduce the fundamental concepts and formalism of Quantum Mechanics at the base of Quantum Calculus and Quantum Cryptography we developed an experiment-based module centered on the use of a Mach-Zehnder laser interferometer equipped with linear polarizers. By analyzing the constructive and destructive interference, students are guided to understand the meaning of mutual exclusivity and incompatibility of polarization states (H, V) and (45°, 135°). A MATLAB simulation allows the understanding of the experimental results in terms of single photons. The module was tested as a pilot intervention on a group of Computer Science PhD students at the University of Verona
Il complesso fenomeno del Failure to Thrive: aspetti medici, psicologici e sociali. Una rassegna
Failure to Thrive (FTT) is a condition where infant (from birth to 3 years) fail to achieve standards of weight and height in relation with age. This occur in state of undernutrition, but also in several situations wich involves a complex plot of organic, psychogenetic and relational factors in the origin and course of this pathology. This work is a review of national and international studies on FTT, recalled by a search through three main database: PsycInfo, Medline and Francis. To January 1980 from December 2002 were find 626 records that concerns theoretical and empirical psychological researches in Failure to Thrive. The work present the national and international theoretical framework in definition, classification and diagnosis of FTT in infancy and early childhood. Moreover, this is a review of empirical studies of the cognitive, affective and social development of children with a history of Failure to Thrive: the litterature indicates that FTT in infancy is associated with adverse developmental outcomes in several areas
A Historical-Didactical Reconstruction of Planck’s Discovery of the Constant h
Notwithstanding the huge historical literature about the discovery of Planck's constant, superficial and often incorrect introductions prevail even in university textbooks. We retrace in a didactical perspective the main steps of Planck's research for a theoretical derivation of Kirchhoff's universal function, given by the black-body spectrum, from first principles as related to the theories of electromagnetism and thermodynamics, considering all his communications and papers from November 1899 to January 1901
Building the basic concepts of quantum mechanics with math and computer science students
A teaching module of eight hours was carried out with four computer science PhD students and five math students enrolled at the University of Verona (Italy) in order to calibrate an Inquiry-Based proposal on Quantum Mechanics for non-physics majors and to develop educational supporting tools. The path is situated in the context of linear polarization of photons, employing a formal approach based on the description of the quantum state as an abstract vector, both representing a needed background for students interested in Quantum Computing and Quantum Cryptography. A special focus is given to the superposition principle and its interpretation in a particle-like description, as well as to the different and new meaning of measurement Single photon entanglement and the superposition of spatially separated states are also addressed. The proposal includes exploration through real experiments with macroscopic light beams, using Polaroid filters and birefringent crystals, and through ideal experiments on single photons, using a specifically developed Java applet. Seven worksheets were developed to support student concept building. Preliminary data analysis elicits two important conceptual hurdles: recognizing the active role of Polaroid filters with respect to the polarization of the photon; recognizing that a single particle can exist in a superposition of spatially separated states
