Nuove ricerche a Solunto
Since 2020 a team of the University of Palermo started a wide program of research in the site of Solunto (Mt. Catalfano), in collaboration with the Archaeological Park of Himera, Solunto and Iato, inclunding several activities of study, documentation and 3D restitution/reconstruction of the buildings discovered in 20th century, and feldwork/excavations in the North Baths (NE corner of the agora) and the Sanctuary W of the theater. We illustrate the frst results of the work in progress in the great sanctuary area on the top of the agora-theater, that are giving a wholly new picture of the complexity and monumentality of this part of the ancient city. On the other hand, we discovered unexpected traces of the urban history from 4th century B.C. on, that allow us to solve the vexata quaestio of the chronology of the urban plan, and to understand the development of the city over time
This paper illustrates the new ac- quisitions resulting from the excavation campaign conducted by the University of Palermo in 2023 at the Contrada Mango Sanctu- ary in Segesta. The research has focused on the foundations of the temple, extended (towards west) with the section preserved in situ referable to the north wall of the cella. The investigation also fo- cused on the east side of the peribolos, where we assume the access to the sacred area was located, and some elements of a balustrade were brought to light. New acquisitions also result from the un- expected discovery in February 2024 of some finds from the excava- tions at Mango by V. Tusa, which had not been traced during the study of the old excavations published in 2023. Of these materials we mainly illustrate a few items of particular interest: a series of sauroteres and bronze spirals for reinforcing the shaft of spears; a statue of small size and some fragments of marble sculptures; fragments of miniature columns and the frieze of the model temple reconstructed by G. Montali on the basis of other architec- tural elements already traced among the Tusa finds; and some fragments of late 14th-early 15th-century ceramics (mostly of Sciacca production), that document not only the last occupation of the area but also a phase of Segesta life that is almost completely unknown or still blurred in the contours

Ricerche a Solunto (2022)
New Investigations at Solunto (2022) ∙ The last fieldwork
campaign in Solunto by the University of Palermo, in the sanctuary
above the theatre and in the baths near the agora (the North Baths),
obtained some relevant results concerning both the building sequences
and the architectural configurations. In the sanctuary, a
clearer picture is emerging of the oldest layout, dating from the 4th
century B.C. (1st phase). After the first reshaping of the street grid
and of the urban layout (2nd phase), in the second half of 2nd century
B.C., an overall restyling (3rd phase) gave the whole sanctuary
area an impressive organization into terraces linked through ramps
and stairways. A striking feature, till now unnoticed, is the stairway
aligned with the front of the temple with two cellae and forecourt,
which enhances the theatre on its central axis; the theatre itself has
a rectilinear analemma wall on the corresponding rear (W) part. In
the baths, an eastern extension of the building has been discovered
and some new evidence for the function of the complex has been
obtained. At the same time, the virtual reconstruction project is
being carried out, integrating the results from the fieldwork into
the overall framework, with the twofold objective: to test the new
acquisitions, and to create a virtual tour of the ancient city, allowing
a “Solunto experience”
