Advances in float system transplant production: growing media and trays
A patented new growing medium (NGM), made of biodegradable polyurethane agglomerated peat, was developed. On a weight basis, it consists of water (80%), peat (12-15%), and aggregating polymers (5-8%). The use of materials alternative to peat is under study. Among them, a promising one is bark fiber. Several plug shapes (also concerning seed niche) and sizes have been investigated over the time. A TFS-TP system was developed, consisting of plug units of the NGM, floating on a reusable polystyrene foam flat panel. Management in the greenhouse is similar to a standard TFS-TP system. Also more environmental-friendly alternatives to polystyrene foam panels are under study: made both of biodegradable foam polymers (BFP) or BFP-agglomerated paper/wood derivative
Glycerol phase from biodiesel cycle: a potential feedstock for material and energy production
Glycerol phase from biodiesel cycle. A potential feedstock for direct use and process
The development of Fatty Acid Methyl Esther technology based biodiesel production has increased crude glycerol availability worldwide for the last years. After a period of low prices, which stimulated basic and applied research, in order to use crude glycerol as a platform for “green” materials and energy production, a very recent bullish market has cooled the enthusiasm for these prospects. However, several direct uses and processes have been investigated and, after a careful economical evaluation, can be exploited as downstream activities of F.A.M.E. production
Ve.Pro.L.G. to tune microirrigated tobacco to given water and field conditions
Although its positive results, microirrigation diffusion over the years has been frequently slowed down by shortage of affordable plant design and operation. To overcome these problems and aim at maximum water and energy savings, a SW, named Ve.Pro.L.G./s, was released by LNI (Natl. Lab for Irrigation)-DAGA and ARSIA (Tuscany's Agency for Agriculture). This SW helps project dripping tapes, irrigation sectors, and microirrigation plant parts, to cope with actual field conditions and crop requirements. At the operating stage, it verifies the operation of the dripping tapes, and suggests possible plant modifications to improve its efficiency. It calculates also: soil washed out and crop used water volumes, irrigation energy consumption, annual cost of dripping tapes on a field or a broader area basis, and plans water resource use on a given territor
