Ageing analysis of manufacturing equipment: a case study
Ageing analysis is applied in an important company which is an industry leader in the production of roller bearings. A modern CNC vertical lathe is analysed to confirm whether preventive maintenance is needed in order to improve the system availability. The rate of occurrence of failure (ROCOF) model is estimated, after a pre-analysis aimed at identifying an infant mortality period. A general approach to equipment ageing analysis is proposed. This methodology is based on several plotting analyses and statistical tests used to confirm whether a preventive maintenance programme should be implemented
Material handling device selection in cellular manufacturing
This paper presents a new multi-criteria decision model for the material handling device (MHD) selection problem in cellular manufacturing systems. Given a set of manufacturing cells based on several automatic work-centres, the technique makes it possible to select a particular MHD for each cell in an integrated way, with different constraints being taken into consideration. The approach is based on two different multi-attribute analyses executed with analytic hierarchy process (AHP) methodology, and a final integer linear programming including important limitations faced by the designer when making MHD investment decisions. An example using real data is provided to illustrate this methodology
Cyclic Approach to Airport Pavement Management Based on Non-Destructive Deflection Testing
The Authors describe the role of non-destructive deflection tests in Airport Pavement Management System (APMS) presenting the experience developed at an Italian Airport. An original approach to APMS implementation is illustrated, based on the PDCA cycle for quality control and continuous improvement of processes. An example application for the management of the runway pavement is described. Deflection test results obtained in four tests campaign carried out over a ten years period were globally analyzed to obtain pavement bearing capacity evolution and demonstrate the effectiveness of cyclic approach to pavement management. It is showed that structural evaluation can be an invaluable tool in pavement management and assist planning activities in the medium and long term

Disentangling Support for Violent and Non-violent Radicalization among Adolescents: A Latent Profile Analysis
Although support for violent and non-violent radicalization can co-occur, only a few adolescents who support non-violent radicalization also support or engage in violent acts. Yet, little is known about what factors are associated with adolescents’ paths towards or away from violent and/or non-violent radicalization. Within a socio-ecological and positive youth development framework, this study investigates profiles of support for violent and non-violent radicalization among adolescents attending high schools in Quebec (Canada) and whether such profiles are differently associated with experiences of social adversity, school-, family- and peer-related factors and psychological distress. Adolescents (N = 1911; Mage = 15.7; SDage = 0.98; 48.7% girls) completed an online survey during school hours. A Latent Profile Analysis on scores of support for violent and non-violent radicalization was conducted. A multinomial logistic regression was used to explore the associations between profiles and variables of interest. We identified six profiles of adolescents. The heterogeneity of profiles suggested multiple and complex combinations of support for violent and non-violent radicalization as well as their co-existence in some but not all profiles. Adolescents who reported less discrimination, more positive school experiences and more family support were less likely to belong to profiles that supported violence. Primary prevention efforts in the field of support for violent radicalization must adopt a socio-ecological and social justice approach and consider the diversity of adolescents’ profiles, attitudes and experiences
Are there Local Differences in Support for Violent Radicalization? A Study on College Students in the Province of Quebec, Canada
Support for violent radicalization (VR) is a multidimensional phenomenon determined by individual, social, and contextual variables. However, how local contexts influence the configurations of risk and protective factors leading to the process of VR remains an open question. In line with a socioecological framework, this study aims to investigate local differences in support for VR and its associated risk factors (i.e., immigrant status, social adversity, depression, and collective identity) among college students in Quebec, a Canadian province with a variety of social and political contexts (i.e., Francophone Montreal, Quebec City, rural/suburban areas, and Anglophone communities). A total of 1765 college students (71% women; 73% aged between 16 and 21 years) completed an online survey. Mixed-effects models were implemented to test local differences in support for VR and its risk factors. Results showed that the association between social adversity (i.e., discrimination and exposure to violence) and support for VR varied by local context. Specifically, social adversity was a risk factor across all contexts but Quebec City. Although prevention programs may target common determinants of support for VR, they need to be tailored according to local realities, and in particular the level of social diversity and the relative prevalence of mainstream radical discourses
