Il testo di Meyer venne pubblicato la prima volta nel volume "Winkelmann und sein Jahrhundert. In Briefen und Aufsätzen" a cura di Johann Wolfgang Goethe (Tübingen, in der J. G. Cotta’schen Buchhandlung, 1805), con dedica alla duchessa Anna Amalia di Sachsen-Anhalt. Si trattava di una operazione editoriale che rivestì un ruolo centrale nelle recezione di Winckelmann nel XIX secolo nei paesi di lingua tedesca e non solo. Inoltre, il volume faceva parte, come sottolineava Goethe nella introduzione (pp. X-XVI), delle molteplici attività intraprese dagli Amici dell’arte di Weimar (Weimarer Kunstfreunde) per il miglioramento del gusto di un «pubblico più ampio». Il testo di Meyer non è mai stato tradotto in italiano e in Germania ha avuto due riedizioni sine glossa (Leipzig 1969 e Hildeseim 2005)
