Do dynamic text-only web pages improve usability for PDA users?

No full text
Text transcoders are proxy–like systems that respond to requests sent by user’s browsers, strip images, multimedia objects, JavaScript code and change the page layout. Al- though the potential benefits of text transcoders as mecha- nisms to provide alternative and robust user interfaces are multifaceted, at the moment their benefits on users of small mobile devices are not clear. This paper describes an experiment aimed at evaluating us- ability of web pages used with PDAs when processed by a text transcoder. Results based on subjective and objective data show that effectiveness, productivity and satisfaction can be improved. Furthermore, the needed transformations are simple to implement, and mostly achievable by many text transcoders

Do text transcoders improve usability for disabled users?

No full text
Text transcoders are web--server systems that produce, on the fly, a text-only version of a web page requested by a user of a browser. Although the potential benefits of text transcoders axe multifaceted and discussions on appropriateness of text transcoders to produce accessible versions of web sites are still ongoing, at the moment the impact of transcoded pages on disabled web users has not been scientifically studied yet. This paper describes an experiment aimed at evaluating usability of web pages processed by a text transcoder and used by 29 disabled persons. Results based on subjective and objective data show how usability changes, and which results can be generalized to a wider population

La forma infranta. La ‘Lezione di Guerra’ di Wilhelm Windelband

No full text
The author offers a critical review of the last, unfinished writings of Wilhelm Windelband on the philosophy of history. The text, known as the ‘lecture of war,’ is written in the dramatic situation of 1915, just before the death of the master of the Baden School. The author interprets the ‘lecture’ in relation to the crisis into which the project of neo-Kantian philosophy of culture was thrown by the World War. Windelband tried to safeguard his own philosophical perspective and to make a positive contribution to the cultural struggle into which the Great War had driven all German intellectuals

The industrialization impulse demanded by the economy of progress in the enlightened mentality was reflected, during the reign of Carlos III, in engineering works such as the construction of the Imperial Canal of Aragon. This emergence of the political economy as an instrument of government against the dictates of religion had its peak in the last decade of that reign, with Floridablanca in politics, Francisco Cabarrús in the economy and Antonio Ponz in the arts as the main promoters. .Through these three fields of analysis, this book reviews the combination of factors and circumstances that, at the end of the 1780s, linked Ramón Pignatelli with Francisco de Goya through a painting commission for the Imperial Canal. from Aragon. The review of archival documents, the dating of the Immaculate Conception that occupied the chapel of the Canal in the Jalón aqueduct through the radiological analysis of the traces of this painting found under the Portrait of Joaquina Candado Ricarte and the identification of the architect of the Canal, Fernando Martínez Corcín as author of the plans for the project of the church of San Fernando de Torrero, have allowed us to situate the commission to Francisco de Goya, before the death of Carlos III and the impact of the French Revolution on Spanish politics will truncate the modernizing economic project. Early decrease of oxidative stress by atorvastatin in hypercholesterolaemic patients: Effect on circulating vitamin E

No full text
Aims: Statins inhibit oxidative stress, but the interplay between cholesterol lowering and antioxidant vitamins is still unclear. Aims of the study were to assess if statins inhibit oxidative stress independently from cholesterol lowering, to assess the behaviour of vitamin E simultaneously with the changes of oxidative stress, to determine in vitro if atorvastatin was able to directly influence platelet-mediated LDL oxidation and vitamin E consumption. Methods and results: In 30 hypercholesterolaemic patients (HC) and 20 healthy subjects (HS), urinary isoprostanes and plasma vitamin E were determined. The HC were randomized to diet or diet plus atorvastatin 10 mg/day. Compared with HS, HC had higher isoprostanes and lower vitamin E levels. The statin-allocated group showed a reduction of isoprostanes after only 3 days (-18.8%, P < 0.01); after 30 days, a stronger reduction of isoprostanes was noted (-37.1%, P < 0.01) whereas an increase of vitamin E (+42%, P < 0.01) and a reduction of cholesterol (-24.9%, P < 0.01) were observed. The diet-allocated group showed a weak decrease of cholesterol after 30 days. In vitro study showed that atorvastatin dose-dependently inhibited platelet-mediated LDL oxidation and isoprostane formation with a mechanism involving NADPH-oxidase. Conclusion: The study provides the first evidence that atorvastatin exerts an early antioxidant effect that could contribute to enhancing circulating vitamin E. Low-grade endotoxemia is associated with cardiovascular events in community-acquired pneumonia

No full text
Objectives: Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is associated with low-grade endotoxemia but its relationship with cardiovascular events (CVE) has not been investigated. Methods: We evaluated the incidence of CVE including myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular death in 523 adult patients hospitalized for CAP. Serum lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and zonulin, a marker of gut permeability, were analyzed in the cohort, that was followed-up during hospitalization and up to 43 months thereafter. Results: During the hospital-stay, 55 patients experienced CVE with a progressive increase from the lowest (0.6%) to highest LPS tertile (23.6%, p < 0.001). Logistic regression analyses showed that higher LPS tertile was independently associated with CVE; LPS significantly correlated with age, hs-CRP and zonulin. In a subgroup of 23 CAP patients, blood E. coli DNA was higher in patients compared to 24 controls and correlated with LPS. During the long-term follow-up, 102 new CVE were registered; the highest tertile of LPS levels was associated with incident CVE; Cox regression analysis showed that LPS tertiles, age, history of CHD, and diabetes independently predicted CVE.Conclusions: In CAP low-grade endotoxemia is associated to short- and long-term risk of CVE. Further study is necessary to assess if lowering LPS by non-absorbable antibiotics may result in improved outcomes. (c) 2023 The Author(s).

No full text
The essay explores the figure of Martino Buonocore and his main work, the renovation of the Carafa della Spina palace in Naples. For this work, executed in the 18th century, there have been conflicting interpretations, which tend to attribute its conception to Ferdinando Sanfelice. This hypothesis has been completely debunked by the investigation of primary sources. Crucial to Buonocore’s production is the family collaboration and the sharing of labour in his father Filippo's studio; the latter was the author of the magnificent 18th-century renovation of the palace in Corigliano. Martino was the author of the church of Santa Maria Verticoeli in Naples and had a 20-year commission for the Certosa di Padula. He worked for a long time with Gennaro Maria Carafa, who was to work on the Posillipo casino and the San Domenico palace. This last work will consolidate the long professional and friendly relationship between the prince and the architect.
