Enseñar el proyecto (y transformar la ciudad) en la era de la comunicación digital/ Teaching the project (and transforming the city) in the age of digital communication
In recent years there has been a progressive devaluation of the role of Architecture. The teaching of the Architecture project is clouded and affected by generalized decisions of communication and spectacularization that generate images loaded with self-referentiality, created more to please the ego of the designers than to welcome those who inhabit them.
These events cause a cessation of the most profound sense of the project and the link with the territories and the city. Once again, the city is changing, following the rhythms of the stock market, profits and rents at an impressive speed. Today there is a strong detachment between the physical city and its citizens, with evident crisis and consequent inadequacy of the models of the contemporary polis. The same division exists between the didactics of the project, which we try to practice in the classrooms of our Universities
The Twentieth-Century: a fragile century, to be safeguarded and consciously nurtured
While the 1900s can be considered the short century of History, we can also define it as the “fragile century” of Architecture: in a short space of time, we saw the production, across the world, of an unparalleled quantity of constructions but with an undoubted decline in architectural quality. The construction techniques of this historical period are now at the centre of the debate on the future of late Twentieth-Century heritage. It is a tricky issue, precisely because the materials and technologies with which this heritage was built have now revealed a series of problems of degradation and physical decay, not only due to exogenous factors. The “short century” is also “fragile” for historiography and critics, still vitiated by many prejudices and lack of objectiveness. However, there is another issue of “fragility” that, until now, has not been properly considered: this relates to copyrights. At first glance, it may seem to have nothing to do with construction quality; however, it hits the mark as, if a building needs “care”, this should be implemented in respect of and in safeguarding the authorship of the work. This, however, often does not happen. It is an issue that relates to the “Culture of the City”: we must first get to know the Heritage that we have before us and learn how to interpret, analyse and assess it critically, to propose its regeneration in an informed manner
The architectural design at different scales: a question of landscape
“From the spoon to the town” is an expression becoming famous after E. N. Rogers' Zurich conference (1946).
Since then, the world has changed, the architect's profession and the ways of teaching architecture have also changed.
Today, futuristic techniques are taught in place of architecture and students are encouraged to design buildings that are beautiful, shiny, fashionable ... but no one thinks about man anymore. Everything seems to be subject only to the laws of economy and finance.
Is this contemporaneousness?
We need to combat the progression of these upheavals, seeking to start again from the sense of the architecture design.
Architecture should be able to combine innovative techniques and materials with the values of the locations, history and traditions: this could become a new challenge for those building the landscapes of the third millennium.
Landscapes - and not just buildings - because the locations in which we live are a compendium of houses and spaces, and because the architect's activity should embrace all scales, from the general to the particular.
Perhaps, again, we need to question everything.
We must try, every time, to give an additional definition of landscape, to seek to add something new to our scientific research
Relations between design and architecture, city and landscape are strongly associated with our mission as architects against the degradation of our living sites. In recent years we are somewhat powerlessly witnessing the progressive loss of importance of the role of Architecture. Considered a tool to build high quality public spaces and places, Architecture is blurred by the widespread intention to create spectacular effects, which produce self-referral images. We must resist the progress of such distortion in an attempt to recommence from the underlying sense of the architectural project by revisiting all the specific traits of the land, its culture and history. Each time we must do our best to further define the landscape. We are accustomed to a 3D spatial idea of the world we live in. We can then consider the time. But perhaps there is also a fifth dimension of space, namely urban culture and landscape. This dimension is a matter of memory, history and stratification and, therefore, of landscape
