Degradation of piezoelectric fluropolymers in space environments

    No full text
The performance criteria of piezoelectric polymers based on polyvinylidene flouride (PVDF) in complex space environments have been evaluated. Thin films of these materials are being explored as in-situ responsive materials for large aperture space-based telescopes with the shape deformation and optical features dependent on long-term deformation and optical features dependent on long-term degradation effects, mainly due to thermal cycling, vacuum UV exposure and atomic oxygen. A summary of previous studies related to materials testing and performance prediction based on a laboratory environment is presented. The degradation pathways are a combination of molecular chemical changes primarily induced via radiative damage and physical degradation processes due to temperature and atomic oxygen exposure resulting in depoling, loss of orientation and surface erosing. Experimental validation for these materials to be used in space is being conducted as part of MISSE-6 (Materials International Space Station Experiment) with an overview of the experimental strategies discussed here

Increased genetic diversity of Neisseria meningitidis isolates after the introduction of meningococcal serogroup C polysaccharide conjugate vaccines

    No full text
During the 1990s, the incidence of meningococcal disease was high in the United Kingdom. This was due primarily to an increase in serogroup C disease, particularly that within the ET-37/ST-11 genetic lineage. Serogroup C meningococcal polysaccharide conjugate vaccines were introduced in the United Kingdom in 1999, but the sequence types of meningococci causing disease since that time have not yet been reported. We have used serogrouping and multilocus sequence typing to characterize meningococci from patients with invasive disease over a 4-year period and show that there is a significant increase in genetic diversity but no genetic evidence of capsule switching.</p

This book relates to two others in the collection. What I write here can surely be refined by those who know the series of books better. A series began with "Forensic Fables" in 1926. "Further Forensic Fables" appeared in 1928, and I have a copy of that. "Final Forensic Fables" appeared in 1929, with a second series in 1932. Then "Fifty Forensic Fables: A Selection" appeared in 1949. I have a copy. Finally "Forensic Fables: Complete Edition" came out in 1961. This is that book, but just how it derives from the earlier four I cannot say. It is not true, as I had hoped, that I could reconstruct parts of this book from the T of C for those two books already in the collection. This book is 456 pages long and contains 110 fables numbered in the beginning T of C. There seems to be a full-page illustration for each fable. As I wrote of the earliest volume I have from the series, the book does for the legal profession in England what George Ade's fables do more broadly. These are enjoyable tales with pleasing caricatures. All the actors are humans. What once was "Butterworth and Company" is now Butterworths. This book relates to two others in the collection. Signal patterns of piston slap of a four-cylinder diesel engine

    No full text
This paper presents an experimental study on the vibration signal patterns associated with a simulated piston slap test of a four-cylinder diesel engine. It is found that a simulated worn-off piston results in an increase in vibration RMS peak amplitudes associated with the major mechanical events of the corresponding cylinder (i.e., inlet and exhaust valve closing and combustion of Cylinder 1). This then led to an increase of overall vibration amplitude of the time domain statistical features such as RMS, Crest Factor, Skewness and Kurtosis in all loading conditions. The simulated worn-off piston not only increased the impact amplitude of piston slap during the engine combustion, it also produced a distinct impulse response during the air induction stroke of the cylinder attributing to an increase of lateral impact force as a result of piston reciprocating motion and the increased clearance between the worn-off piston and the cylinder. The unique signal patterns of piston slap disclosed in this paper can be utilized to assist in the development of condition monitoring tools for automated diagnosis of similar diesel engine faults in practical applications
