The Last Bastion of Architecture
No full textThe essay is a critical interpretation of Rem Koolhaas' theory of Bigness. In fact, of the theories that have best marked the development of architectural culture since World War II – from those of the Smithsons to Rossi, from Eisenman to Venturi and Scott Brown – Rem Koolhaas’s theory of Bigness has probably, more than any other, investigated the intrinsic possibilities of architecture at the end of the 20th century. In light of the number of pseudotheories that have largely characterized the last decade, Bigness is the last constituent fact of recent history: an extremely lucid attempt to draw to a conclusion a history that goes back to the very invention of the modern city, comparing it with architecture’s own immutable core, its physicality, even exposing the theory of Bigness itself to the risk of total failure. The essay investigates the development of the theory of Bigness from its incubation in Koolhaas’s book Delirious New York in 1978, to the "official" presentation in S,M,L,XL in december 1995. The essay presents some parts of the PhD research "L'architettura dei libri. Progetto, scrittura, editoria nella ricerca architettonica contemporanea", developed by the author at Università degli studi G. D'Annunzio, Chieti, Facoltà di Architettura di Pescara, in 2001-2004.

Full text linkThe essay reflects on Rem Koolhaas’s approach to the city that incubated his first projects of the late 1960s and was eventually emblematized in his psychoanalytical, retrospective tale about New York. Long before it offers a solution to the “problems” of the city, Koolhaas’s discourse focuses on (literally) overturning its clichés, its ordinary “commonplaces.” His story of New York, then, is the expression of a fact, of what the city might be when one begins by considering what it already is. Koolhaas’s “secret” is this. The intrinsically tautological nature of his discourse belongs to what Barthes called the “rhetoric of the bourgeois myth”

La questione dello spazio, ciò che resta "sul campo" delle grandi trasformazioni urbane della contemporaneità, è da sempre anche la più trascurata dall’analisi marxista. Sia perché di tutte le astrazioni è sicuramente la più concreta, sia perché la sua progressiva smaterializzazione è proprio alla base del processo capitalistico che vuole tradizionalmente il primato del tempo sullo spazio stesso. Razionalizzato e poi distrutto, lo spazio nella città moderna resiste come ambito peculiare di manifestazione del conflitto. Portato sotto l’unica misura del valore monetario nel sistema capitalistico, acquistabile, esso diventa universale ed omogeneo

Full text linkA ormai più di un anno dall'uscita della nuova traduzione italiana "aggiornata" di Utopie realizzabili di Yona Friedman, il libro sembra essere stato diligentemente digerito da quella che Friedman stesso chiama la "mafia dei media" (stampa, televisione a cui oggi secondo Friedman si aggiunge emblematicamente anche Internet). Del libro la maggior parte dei recensori ha per lo più messo in evidenza la pars costruens: l'ottimismo visionario del pensatore ungherese, profuso, per usare le parole di Franco Purini di "intensa energia riformatrice, attraversata di risonanze illuministe, che si muove verso la prefigurazione di nuove libertà per i cittadini". È rimasto in secondo piano il presupposto del libro stesso: il j'accuse che Friedman ribadisce, a trenta anni dalla prima edizione del libro, nei confronti delle odierne "società immobilizzate", incapaci di "scegliere e reagire", con i loro "decision maker che non hanno strumenti per decidere".
