Changing perspectives on the internationalization of R&D and innovation by multinational enterprises: A review of the literature
Internationalization of R&D and innovation by multinational enterprises (MNEs)
has undergone a gradual and comprehensive change in perspective over the
past 50 years. From sporadic works in the late 1950s and in the 1960s, it
became a systematically analyzed topic in the 1970s, starting with pioneering
reports and ‘‘foundation texts’’. Our review unfolds the theoretical and
empirical evolution of the literature from dyadic interpretations of
centralization versus decentralization of R&D by MNEs to more
comprehensive frameworks, wherein established MNEs from advanced
economies still play a pivotal role, but new players and places also emerge in
the global generation and diffusion of knowledge. Hence, views of R&D
internationalization increasingly rely on concepts, ideas, and methods from IB
and other related disciplines such as industrial organization, international
economics, and economic geography. Two main findings are highlighted. First,
scholarly research pays increasing attention to the network-like characteristics
of international R&D activities. Second, different streams of literature have
emphasized the role of location-specific factors in R&D internationalization. The
increasing emphasis on these aspects has created new research opportunities in
some key areas, including inter alia: cross-border knowledge-sourcing
strategies, changes in the geography of R&D and innovation, and the
international fragmentation of production and R&D activities
US outward foreign direct investment in the European Union and the implementation of the single market: empirical evidence from a cohesive framework
In this article we investigate the determinants of US outward Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the European Union for the period 1982-2002. The data set allowed us to discern differences in the pattern of US FDI between EU core and EU periphery countries, as well as over different time periods during the last two decades. The results indicate that the US FDI pattern varies among different groups of countries and that there was a restructuring in multinational firms' investment activity after the implementation of the single market plan. Agglomeration factors, market size, qualified and productive labour and cost efficiency of local production seem to dominate in the location choice of US investors. Copyright (c) 2008 The Author(s). FDI in the EU Periphery: A Multinomial Logit Analysis of Greek Firm Strategies
LOURI H., PAPANASTASSIOU M. and LANTOURIS J. (2000) FDI in the EU periphery: a multinomial logit analysis of Greek firm strategies, Reg. Studies 34 , 419-427. Outward FDI is a recent activity of Greek firms. It is mostly directed towards the Balkan countries and forms an alternative strategy to exports. An analysis of the decision-making process of Greek firms before undertaking any type of internationalization strategy is attempted using a multinomial logit model on firm-level data. Borrowing capacity, labour intensity, sales growth rate, relative firm size and acquired familiarity with foreign markets contribute to the strategic decision of investing abroad. Internationalization, Fdi, Mnes, Internationalisation, Investissement Direct Etranger, Societes Multinationales, Internationalisierung, Investierung Im Ausland, Multinationale Unternehmen,

The Evolution of US Outward Foreign Direct Investment in the Pacific Rim: A Cross-Time and Country Analysis.
The location determinants of US FDI in the Pacific region of the OECD, i.e. Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Korea, are analysed for 1982-1997. The data set allowed two time periods i.e. the 1980s and the 1990s, and two different subgroups, i.e. Australia and New Zealand, and Japan and Korea to be distinguished. Statistical evidence indicates a heterogeneous response of US FDI towards different countries and for different time periods. Factors such as market size, income level and qualified and productive labour exert a significant impact on both the timing and the locational choice of US investors in the region
Determinants of MNE Subsidiaries Decisions to Set Up Own R&D Laboratories - Theory and Evidence
We explore the determinants of MNE subsidiaries decisions to set-up own R&D laboratories drawing on evidence from UK regions. In this context, we also test for the interaction between firm's internal and external environments. We also integrate extant IB and strategic management literatures and incorporate recent debates in New Economic Geography (NEG) in specifying the 'external environment'. We find support for the role of firm's 'productive opportunity' and predictions of the NEG on the basis of an analysis of primary data. We discuss implications for managerial practice and government regional policies.MNE subsidiaries, R&D laboratory, internal and external environment, productive opportunity
The Multinational Corporation and the Global Sourcing of Knowledge: Remodeling Absorptive Capacity
We build on extant theory of the MNC, MNC subsidiaries, absorptive capacity and Penrose's concept of 'productive opportunity' to develop a framework on the MNC and absorptive capacity (AC) that allows us to explore the role of subsidiaries in the global sourcing of knowledge. We develop and test hypotheses using primary questionnaire-collected data. Our results support the idea that subsidiaries' realized AC can be improved by the realized and potential AC of the MNC group and the subsidiary and in turn may improve the performance of the subsidiaries and the group as a whole.Multinational Corporation, absorptive capacity, subsidiaries, knowledge
