Happy cows, happy milk: Smart cows and quality factors

Cows are one of the most important animals in our food industry, given the production of milk and related products. In this paper we present the first outcomes of a large study conducted on cows, studying cows behaviour via GPS tracking. The main goal of the project is to focus on quality factors, that is to say factors that are essential for the diary industry: cow health, quality of milk, milk taste. We turn cows into Smart Cows, and use the collected data to try to gain insights on what are the factors that positively contribute to the quality factors. The results, obtained from analysing outdoor behaviour of a large number of cows, are rather surprising, showing how not only physical aspects play a role, but in fact it is the social aspects of cows that play a key role for quality factors

Health zone monitoring: A passive approach

The health of citizens is obviously a primary factor when considering urban scenarios. Health factors can derive from various causes, included the same city environment (critical levels of pollution in some areas). In this research we develop a smart infrastructure, based on a budget-savvy sensor platform, able to automatically measure citizen health in a given zone by passively collecting information on the citizens. We show the effectiveness of the method by testing it within a large city environment, and analyse its various trade-offs and implications, showing how in fact the urban tissue is spatially related to the health of its inhabitants

Strategies of success for social networks: Mermaids and temporal evolution

The main goal of this article is to investigate techniques that can quickly lead to successful social systems by boosting network connectivity. This is especially useful when starting new online communities where the aim is to increase the system utilization as much as possible. This aspect is very important nowadays, given the existence of many online social networks available on the web, and the relatively high level of competition. In other words, attracting users' attention is becoming a major concern, and time is an essential factor when investing money and resources into online social systems. Our study describes an effective technique that deals with this issue by introducing the notion of mermaids, special attractors that alter the normal evolutive behavior of a social system. We analyze how mermaids can boost social networks, and then provide estimations of fundamental parameters that business strategists can take into account in order to obtain successful systems within a constrained budget

    Why do network organizations fail?

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine network failures and the main reasons why network organizations, intentionally developed by a group of actors to pursue specific goals, become unfruitful and fail in their goals and expectations of creating collective value. The goal of this paper is thus to contribute a better understanding of the reasons network organizations encounter problems in their dynamics that prevent them from reaching the expected outcomes. Design/methodology/approach: The study is firstly based on a literature review finalized to identify the main variables considered as potentially impacting on network failures. Secondly, the paper is based on a survey conducted on 189 strategic networks that highlighted difficulties in achieving their goals. An analysis of the 24 questionnaires returned generated the results discussed. The empirical study concerns strategic networks intentionally created and signed by Italian SMEs according to a specific law designed to promote the development of inter-firm cooperation (“network contracts”). Findings: The results of the research highlight the role of specific key items related to individual, structural, legitimacy, interaction and governance variables in explaining failures in network organizations. According to the data, failure can occur immediately before the network start-up, resulting in a blocked network or in a subsequent developmental stage, resulting in a dormant network. The empirical research demonstrated that the items affecting network failure differ between blocked and dormant networks. The authors explain such differences, considering them according to the expected goals declared by the two different types of networks. Originality/value: The question of why networks fail is relevant in times of disruption and digitalization when new forms of organization are needed to link businesses and various stakeholders and thereby develop innovative and sustainable ideas for an entrepreneurial future. However, very few studies have examined network failure. The study contributes to this field of research by investigating the dynamics of networks intentionally developed to reach shared goals. The findings can be useful to both companies that decide to start up a strategic network and the policymakers that promote, finance and monitor inter-firm collaboration

    ASQ: history and debates

At the 50th anniversary of James D. Thompson’s fundamental book, Organizations in Action, TAO Digital Library proposes a reflection on this great master’s legacy and the evolution of organizational studies. Twelve researchers, from different disciplinary fields, analyze both the texts utilized for teaching and the contribution of several important journals, particularly in recent decades. The outcome is an overall picture that may stimulate different, divergent evaluations and, even more importantly, desirable, deeper reflections. In particular, Masino Marchiori' contribution aims to reconstruct the history of Administrative Science Quarterly by comparing Thompson’s initial intentions with the orientations of subsequent editors, and document the theoretical production hosted in the journal untill today
