No full textThe Ravenna area is subject to a high natural subsidence. The subsidence rate can be inferred by the thickness of the sedimentary sequence: the velocities are quite constant in time, ranging between 0 and about 2 mm/y. In the second half of the last century, the town and its surroundings have been affected by a severe artificial subsidence of up to fifty times the natural rate, chiefly due to water and gas extraction. The total subsidence reached values of about one meter

No full textThe town of Ravenna, on the south-eastern edge of the Po River Plain, 10 km from the present shoreline, is subject to a high regional natural subsidence, near to the maximum values of all the Po plain, active from at least the Pliocene and during all the Quaternary. In the last decades Ravenna and its surroundings have been affected by a man-induced subsidence of up to fifty times the natural rate, mainly due to water pumping for civic usage and then to the extraction of methane. The subsidence reached peaks of high risk and the related effects of these became critical. The progressive reduction in the last two decades of underground water use brought the subsidence close to natural rates, but the negative consequences of elevation loss in the near future due to coastal erosion, higher storm surges and the risk of river floods, still remain

No full textRecently, advanced technologies of genetic manipulation haeve been successfully integrated to classical methods of plant breeding for obtaining a qualitative evolution of crops and for increasing or introducing resistances against pathogens and abiotic stresses. In fact, biotechnological approaches currently allow the selection of plants having new characteristics and will conduct in the next future to the constitution of genetically modified verieties. The potentials of biotechnologies in plant science and crop improvement could, however, meet limitations due to the absence of an appropriate and uniform legal protection of techynological novelties and plants showing unique traits. This pubblication presents a review of the current legal and practic aspects on the protection of plant materials and biotechnological innovations
