Most chelonian pups do not have sexual dimorphism. This condition is also faced by Podocnemis expansa, requiring the use of invasive methods or even euthanasia of individuals for sexing. Considering that this species has a long history of population decline and that sex ratio is an important variable to support conservation and management practices, the present study aimed to analyze the efficiency of geometric morphometry in the sexing of newly hatched P. expansa individuals when compared to their histological sexing. A total of 78 specimens from natural nests located along the Xingu River, between Vitória do Xingu and Senador José Porfírio Counties, in the southwestern part of the State of Pará, Brazil, were used. For the morphometric analysis each specimen had its carapace photographed and the softwares TPSUtil, TPSDig2 and TPSRelw were used to generate the data matrix used in the analyses. For the histological study the specimens had their gonads removed and sexual identification was performed by means of light microscopy. Data analyses were conducted in the Past 2.17 software. The histological analysis revealed the presence of 38 female and 40 male specimens. The morphometric analysis provided accurate sexual identification for approximately 50% of the specimens. Thus, base on the performed tests, this technique did not generate satisfactory results that could replace or even reduce the use of the histological studies for the sexing of newly hatched P. expansa individuals. Therefore, histology turned out to be the best tool for identifying the sex in the assessed population of the studied chelonian species.
The species Podocnemis expansa has great importance for traditional and indigenous communities in the Amazon region. Has the title of largest chelonian of freshwater in South America and can weigh up to 60 kg, predominantly herbivorous animal can accept meat and fish in your diet in captivity. Like other organisms, they are susceptible to various parasites, and the most common endoparasites nematodes, trematodes, monógenos, cestodes and protozoa and ectoparasites from the leeches. This research aims to verify the experimental transmission of hemoparasites Haemogregarina sp. and Sauroplasma sp. for Podocnemis expansa by repast of Unoculubranchiobdella expansa leech and the social importance of chelonian in the river Javaés, Tocantins. They were captured 37 specimens of P. expansa, 17 adults and 20 young newly hatched but 11 pups died during the experiment. Leeches found were removed from the animals with the aid of a spatula and identified by morphological characters in a stereomicroscope (40x). 454 leech species Unoculubranchiobdella expansa were viewed in 17 animals captured in Javaés river. Individuals captured showed prevalence of 100% for parasitism by leeches and 64.7% of the study population was parasitized by Sauroplasma sp. The intensity of leech was significantly correlated with body condition score (n = 17; rs = 0.812, p ≤ 0.001). There was no significant correlation between the prevalence and intensity leech (χ2 = 2.1604, df = 1, p = 0.1416). The chicks were infected, all presented Sauroplasma sp, no infection hemogregarine sp. The social research were interviewed 20 people over 18 years living in the settlement Café da Roca, near the Javaés river. About 75% of respondents claim to know someone who has the habit or who likes to eat turtles within the settlement, 15% said they eat or eat turtle eggs. As for medical use, 30% make use of turtles. The medicinal use reported by parties is the Lard Amazon Turtle, commonly used by women to combat varicose veins, scars, bronchitis, flu and cramp. It was found that 45% of respondents did not know the turtle project of Bananal Island, but 95% of respondents agreed that the turtles need to be protected. It was observed that the community of Roca coffee settlement uses the meat and the Amazon turtle as an alternative food rich in protein in place of beef. The species Podocnemis expansa has great importance for traditional and indigenous communities in the Amazon region.
Podocnemis expansa has been suffering great pressure entropy on its populations. Wherever
they exist they are usually part of human diet, frequently being consumed and having a
cultural and economic value, especially in areas in Amazon. Protection programs and later the
building up of creation farms have been established replenishing natural stocks. The studies in
natural environment the species still has many blank areas, making it necessary to amplify the
information which is still inexact in some specific areas. The objective of this study is to
evaluate aspects to the feeding, such as their diet and its level of protein and parasitism in P.
expansa, in captivity and in natural environment, associating such factors with the animal
interaction and the interaction with their own habitat, in order to help the biological
understanding, behavior and strategies to conserve and manage. The study was made with
young subjects of the P. expansa, species with a shell length variation of 15 to 30cm. 80
Animals were captured in the wild over Javaés/TO river, parallels 9º53’22.20S” and
10º2’30.36S”, meridians 50º8’55.70W” and 50º0’39.66W”, they were then divided in groups
of 20 individuals, the capturing being made in two times of the year, both in the dry and rain
season. The animals were captured with hook without barb, net or diving. 100 hatchlings were
transferred to captivity and evaluated in groups of 20 at each turn chosen in an aleatory form.
At the State sponsored creation farm, Fazenda Praia Alta, county of Lagoa da Confusão/TO ,
coordinates 10º43’24.1S” and 49º50’40.9W”, 160 animals were evaluated in two distinct
tanks, being 20 animals collected at each turn. The animals were submitted to gauging and
calibration of the corporeal mass and biometrics measurements, ectoparasitism evaluations
and blood collection for blood rubbing and haemoparasites check. Animals from the wild had
the stomach content retrieved for diet evaluation, protein measurement of the food and gastric parasites. The analyses and diversity showed on the statistic and unfolded the interaction
between the variable, on Tuckey and Mann-Withney tests and simple correlation. Diet on
captivity was verified over food offering. in natural environment, analyzed for methods of
gravimetrical occurrence and. The protein level was gotten by the table of composition of
foods and through the Kjedal method of nitrogen determination. Results revealed low
development on the older animals and the younger animals had a better growth. Diet based
upon four types of vegetables with a protein content of approximated 0,51 and 7,81% and
commercial fish food with a level of 24 and 28% of protein. In the wild their diet is mostly
herbivorous, however younger animals show an increase relative in contents of animal origin.
The quantity of stomach content differs statistically between the dry season and the rain
season in about 5% from the dry season to the others. Variation on the level of protein
changed from 0,226 to 12,5%. Parasitism in the wild showed 99% of infection by protozoan,
with high level of parasitism, 31% by Nematoda and Platyhelmintes, corresponding from
1,24% to 95,34% of the stomach content, and 19% of ectoparasites, basically appearing
during the dry season when the animals were on the flats. P. expansa showed it self on the
wild as a host of parasites, without showing any signs of loosing any vital signs or
debilitation. In captivity the results were, for the tanks, 20% and 46% of infection by
protozoan, 45% and 6% by ectoparasite. The hatchlings newly born did not show any sign of
being infected during this research. Among the Platyhelmintes are Halltrema avitellina
(trematode digenetic), with higher frequency during the dry season and two species of
monogenius. The nematodes are Klossinemella concilliatus, Atractis cruciata e Atractis sp
(nematodeos), having higher frequency during the rain season. It was found gametocyte of
Haemogregarina sp and within the erythrocyte inclusions unknown, having a higher
frequency on the wild. There wasn’t correlation between U. expansa and Haemogregarina sp.
The result of the parasitism goes against the hypothesis of the higher susceptibility of thecaptivity animals and reinforces the theses of the life time of the parasites. At ectoparasitism,
the captivity conditions are favorable. The relations with the parasites might be of
commensalisms, opportunism or real parasitism.
No rio Javaés/TO, na área
localizada entre os paralelos 9º53’22.20S” e 10º2’30.36S”, e meridianos 50º8’55.70W” e
50º0’39.66W”.
No criatório comercial do Estado,
In the state of Tocantins is commonly used in agricultural crops, which can be evidenced in the municipality of Lagoa da Confusão, known by the number of agricultural projects developed in the region. This paper aims to present preliminary data from a survey of pesticides that are used by farmers and to compare the individuals of L. ocellatus captured along the Urubu - Tocantins. The Urubu is part of the sub-basin of the river Formoso, has about 2.702 km2 and your main course is 130 km to the mouth. The study is located between the geographic coordinates W 49 ° 41 '17.54 ", S 10 ° 50' 49.32" W and 49 ° 2 '43.99 ", S 10 ° 38' 13.84". This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of University Luterana of Brazil, and by the Center for Conservation and Management of Reptiles and Anfíbios-RAN/ICMBio. Samples were collected during 2009, with nightly visits to nearby Urubu. Catches were carried out manually with the aid of hand nets. This procedure was carried out for two to three consecutive nights. Of the individuals captured were selected 5 (five) apparently healthy and 100% with malformations, which were sent to the Analytical Laboratory of Histology - UFG. The histological slides prioritized reproductive system, the epithelium and liver, since according to literature, can be largely affected by pesticide contamination of substances. The semi-structured interviews were conducted in the vicinity of point 2 and 3, with the farmers, still performing survey near the place of return of empty containers of pesticides. From this, it was noticed that in the area was cleared and where rice is grown under flooded conditions was greater amount of L. ocellatus, and little guys. Unlike reality observed in the native area, capturing a greater number of larger ones. A similar situation happened in section 3, the presence of grass, individual we had different sizes and in greater quantity. During the interviews it was noticed that many farmers responsible for planting, although it said it would not be possible to produce without using pesticides, were afraid to release the products used. Were identified pathological changes in liver and skin of L. ocellatus three points studied.
The work seeks to contribute to the understanding of the conservation of the species of
Podocnemis expansa by means of studies on reproductive ecology, the advancement of
agricultural frontiers and the control, hunting and commercialization of these animals in the
central region of the Araguaia Bananal Ecological Corridor in the State of Tocantins. The
research presents a methodological approach divided into four distinct stages. Initially, it
seeks to present and analyze the projections of the agricultural production of the
municipalities of Caseara, Cristalândia, Formoso do Araguaia, Confusion Lagoon,
Marianópolis and Pium with the number of females of species of P. expansa species nesting
on the beaches of the Javaés river during the period (PQA) between 1985 and 2010. The data
of agricultural production were analyzed for the historical series from 1990 to 2015, through
the number of heads of cattle and area planted with temporary crops and crops all the
municipalities mentioned. For the data analysis and prediction, the Box-Jenkins (1976) SelfCorrelated
Integrated Average Averages model was used. Next, the objective was to evaluate
the socioenvironmental profile of the people who use and / or commercialize these animals
from the seizure reports and semi-structured interviews. In all, 93 infraction notices were
registered, with 589 animals recaptured and returned to nature, of which more than 80%
belong to the species P. expansa. The offenders assessed in the actions of inspection are
essentially as low-income people, with little or no schooling and age ranging from 21 to 75,
all males. In the interviews, 88.34% reported consuming the animals, and 51.45% preferred P.
expansa, 30.09% P. unifilis, 6.70% consumed Chelonoidis sp and only 11.76% did not
consume, of this total, 60.19% stated that they did not consume eggs. 61.16% stated that the
main capture period is from August to December and that the Indians are the main responsible
for capture and commercialization, being pointed out by 49.51% of the interviewees. For the
great majority, 67%, there is no inspection in the region and, even without inspection, the
amount of animals in the wild is reasonable. For 41.74%, sustainable management through
quotas would be the best alternative for the preservation and conservation of species.
In the third stage, the geomorphological aspects of the expansa nesting areas between 1985
and 2010 were evaluated in five beaches of the Javaés river in the central region of the
Araguaia National Park on Bananal Island. The density of the nests along the beaches showed
a preference of these animals for environments that have distinct geomorphological
characteristics, either in relation to the physical dimensions, elevation of the sandbank or
variations in the level of water in the river. In the fourth and last stage of the research, the
objective was to evaluate the reproductive pattern of P. expansa females in a natural
environment. The size of the females was estimated from the traces left by them during
ambulation and / or shortly after laying. The results show that larger females have litters with
central do Corredor Ecológico Araguaia Bananal no Estado do Tocantins. A pesquisa
e 75 anos, todos do sexo masculino.
A densidade
It is one of the most important representatives of the turtle fauna of the Amazon region Podocnemis expansa. This species has a tendency to spawn in groups of several turtles on the same night. Their nests are relatively deep and concentrated in a certain area of the beach. The nesting sites are crucially important to many animals of different species, in particular for turtles, since the choice of an environment can influence the phenotype, the survival of chicks and cost of the female reproduction, affecting maternal and adequacy of descendants. This study aimed to evaluate aspects related to the reproductive process of P. expansa and the impacts of anthropogenic interference in riverine areas surrounding the river Javaés and Formoso River in the Araguaia basin - TO. They were marked 75 nests of P. expansa in the two areas of study, 38 from the beaches of Javés River (Pium-TO) and 37 of the Formoso river beaches (Lagoa da Confusão - TO). Regarding the height of the beaches of the two study areas, the U test was not significant (U = 14125; p = 0.8237). In comparison relationship between areas, the heights of the P. expansa nests on the beaches of Javaés River differed from the heights of the nests of the Formoso river beaches, with significant results (U = 331.5, p <0.0001) .When analyzed data grain size, we obtained significant results p <0.000015 showing that there is a relationship between grain size samples of all the beaches. The location, marking and characterization of spawning environment in both reproductive areas showed us that the beaches of the Araguaia River basin, also have favorable properties for nesting P.expansa and can say that possess natural features and the height of the beaches not influences the granulometry of the same standard. The impacting activities in the areas studied in the show that there is need for increased oversight, since the beaches of the river Javaés and Formoso river, did not significantly differ by the amount of impacting activities, but the intensity of these activities in each area.
There are currently, in 13 families of Testudines, divided into approximately 300
species. The genus Podocnemis has importance in the feeding, symbolic and also medicinal,
especially for the communities of the Amazon and has been impacted in the populations of
diverse species, with the loss of habitats, besides the direct hunting, especially for
commercialization. Thus, the present study aims to establish the population structure of P.
sextuberculata and P. unifilis, in the region of influence of the UHE Belo Monte, on the Xingu-
PA river. The data were collected between the years of 2012 to 2017. For P. sextuberculata,
catches were carried out in the Tabuleiro do Embaubal in the ebb, flood and flood, using four
different capture methods (waiting net, trawl, fishing and viration), with a catch rate of 16.5%
for the study, (86 ♂ (13.6%), 590 ♀ (86.4%) and 7 juveniles (1), with a total of 4128 hours of
sample effort, where a total of 683 %)), the viration method was exclusive for the females and
the most efficient among the methods, and the time of the year with the highest catch was
ebullient, there was only a positive relationship between the trail and the mass of the female.
For P. unifilis, senses were performed in four different locations within the area of direct
influence of the Belo Monte Bus, a total of 1214 transects were covered, with a total of 6070
km of river, accounting for 6214 individuals sighted, with density at 1.02 ind/km, where 481
were males (7.7%) and 928 females (14.9%). In which the sex ratio, 1 ♂: 1.93 ♀, 281 adult
males were seen, which represented 4.5% and the 200 young ones (3.22%) of the population
sampled. The total number of adult females counted was 853 (13.73%), and the number of
young females was 75 (1.21%). The number of adults who did not have their sex determined at
the time of the census was 537 (8.64%) and the number of unidentified youths was 4,268
(68.68%). The area with the highest density was area 6, with 2.89 ind/km. The water surface
temperature at the beginning of the transect was the only environmental variable studied that
presented a significant relation with the density.
no rio Xingu-PA.
Due to the importance of agriculture in the North and Central-West Region, distribution sites
of the species Podocnemis expansa, the objective was to study if the impacts caused by the
advancement of agriculture and livestock can affect the environment to the point of interfering
with the optimal temperature of performance of these animals. With this, the performance
curve of this species was elaborated, in order to understand the optimum temperature for its
performance, comparing individuals of natural environment and commercial production. In
addition, the analysis of land use and occupation in the Araguaia Basin was conducted
between 1985 and 2017 to show the progress of the agricultural sector. An analysis was also
made of the variations in flow and precipitation levels in the Alto Araguaia Basin, in the same
time cut, in which it was possible to identify possible changes in the flow caused by the
agricultural practice. The ecophysiological study was carried out in the municipality of Lagoa
da Confusão - OT in the period of ebbing season of 2018. Animals were collected from
natural environment and captivity, these individuals were submitted to low and high
temperatures aiming to find the minimum and maximum critical, respectively, in addition to
be submitted to 6 test batteries at 3 different temperatures to compose the locomotor
performance curve. Each battery consisted of timing the swim time on a 2 meter course. With
the value of the minimum and maximum critical temperature it was possible to compose the
graph along with these results. For the analysis of land use and occupation, maps of the years
of 1985, 1996, 2006, and 2017 of the Araguaia River Basin were elaborated. The maps were
obtained through the MapBiomas Project, processed and treated in Qgis software. For the
analysis of flow and rainfall, rainwater and rainfall data were collected from 24 and 34
stations, respectively, on the HidroWeb platform of the National Water Agency, inserted in
the Alto Araguaia Basin, in order to obtain the time series decomposition, detecting the
effects of seasonality and trends in flow and precipitation variation. The data were corrected
using Amelia package and tested by means of mixed effects linear models (LMMs) the ratio
of river flow with the percentage area occupied by agriculture in the ANA level 4 ottobacias.
The result obtained with regard to the locomotor performance of the P. expansa turtle
indicates a significant difference (P <0.001) in the locomotor performance curve between
individuals from both environments. Commercial turtle turtles showed inferior performance
compared to wild-type animals, however, it was observed that captive animals had a better
performance at higher temperatures. Concerning the use and occupation of the soil in the
Araguaia River Basin, an increase of over 8 million ha was observed. There was a significant
difference between the flow and precipitation levels over the years, and a significant negative
relation between the area occupied by agriculture and the average flow of the Alto Araguaia
Basin. From the results obtained, it was known that the advance of the area occupied by
agriculture affects the environment of survival of P. expansa and that the species presents a
thermoforming behavior, indicating that a severe increase in temperature could lead the
species to extinction, since it does not have thermoregulatory behavior.
avanço do setor agropecuário.
submetidos a baixas e altas temperaturas objetivando encontrar o crítico mínimo e máximo,
no software Qgis.
Bacia do Alto Araguaia.
The Amazonian turtles, especially Podocnemididae family, were and have being one of the
main sources of food and protein for riverine people, indigenous people and rural populations
throughout the Amazon region. Your consumption being considered a rooted tradition in their
culture. Thus, this research aimed to make the assessment the perception and socio environmental profile of people who use and/or trade Amazonian turtles, provide guidelines for
Environmental Education programs, through semi-structured interviews and content analysis.
The research was conducted specifically with urban populations of Santa Maria das Barreiras
town, in the state of Pará - Brazil, which were selected using the snowball sampling method.
For this, 59 people were interviewed, who represented four social groups: public servants of
Castro State School of Basic Education, 7th year of Elementary School students, and 3rd year
of Medium School students of the same school, urban population of the town and people
involved with Araguaia Chelonian Project, who represented different profiles. The sample
shows a good level of education and age, varying from 12 to 71 years old, with 64.40% (n =
38) of men and 35.59% (n = 21) of women. The study found that the majority of respondents
are municipal and/or state public servants, with monthly family income about one or more than
three basic salaries, with about one to twenty individuals per residence (average of 4.40
individuals). Because of this study, it was identified that 72.86% (n = 43) consume chelonian
meat, of which 76.74% (n = 33) have a predilection for species of Podocnemis expansa. Only
25.38% (n = 15) consume chelonian eggs, of which 89.66% (n = 13) have a preference for
Podocnemis unifilis eggs. Furthermore, the interviewees assert that they acquire these animals
through trade, hunting/fishing or donations, from friends, colleagues or indigenous people. All
the interviewees assert that the survival of the turtles in the region is mainly affected by the
anthropic action (hunting/fishing and egg collection), causing a reduction in the natural stocks
of the region and the majority recommends intense inspection and environmental education as
the main forms of guarantee the survival of the turtles in the region. Most of the respondents
consider that chelonian have great socio-environmental importance, highlighting the cultural
custom and flavour this kind of meat, as the main reasons for the consumption of chelonian in
that region. They also say that would encourage their family and friends to avoid the
consumption of those animals; they also affirm that they know the Araguaia Chelonian Project,
but are not engaged with it; despite that, most of interviewees recognize that the Project has
contributed to changing negative people's attitudes towards chelonian. In addition, this research
elaborated a set of proposals that can assist the work of conservation of turtles focused on
environmental education, the strengthening of inspection actions and community engagement,
in order to contribute for awareness and understanding of the social and ecological relevance
of the chelonian, considering the perspective of enabling responsible use and enhancing the
potential of this species. The wide consumption presented reinforces the urgent character of
conservation actions needed in the area, in addition to Araguaia Chelonian Project, since the
pressure of consumption is high, and there is not sufficient population data that allow
establishing the real impact of this consumption for the maintenance of viability of the natural
chelonian populations.
do Araguaia, apresentando diferentes perfis.
O amplo consumo, associado a outras
