Surgical management of a ruptured basilic vein aneurysm

    No full text
A 60-year-old female with dialysis-dependent end-stage renal failure presented at the study centre complaining of acute pain in the right arm at the level of her brachio-basilic arteriovenous fistula. The basilic vein was aneurysmal at the level of the dialysis puncture site (panel A). Under general anaesthesia, brachial artery control proximal to the fistula was established and the brachio-basilic anastomosis was exposed; when clamping the basilic vein it was noted to have ruptured (panel B). The aneurysmal segment of basilic vein was removed with primary closure of the anastomosis preserving the patency of the brachial artery, with no neurovascular complications

Determinants of tourism demand for Western Balkans countries: a system generalized method of moments (GMM) approach

    No full text
This paper's main objective is to investigate some of the most important determinants of tourism demand for Western Balkans countries. In this regard, a system generalized method of moments model is estimated for a dataset covering 17 relevant source countries over the period from 2010 to 2022. Results reveal that income levels, geographic proximity, and the COVID-19 pandemic significantly influence tourism flows. For instance, higher GDP per capita in source countries positively impacts tourism demand, while the pandemic had a strongly negative effect. These findings contribute to the literature on dynamic tourism demand modelling and offer actionable insights into policymakers to enhance regional tourism strategie

In the last decade, the stock returns volatility has been at the core of theoretical and empirical analysis, thanks to the evolution of technology and new software. The volatility process is concerned with the evolution of conditional variance of the asset return over time. This is a subject of remarkable interest because the variability of asset returns is time dependent and appears in clusters. In this paper, we investigate some new experimental extensions of the Multiplicative Error Model. This model has been introduced by Engle (2002) for positive valued processes and it is specified as the product of a conditionally autoregressive scale factor and an innovation process with positive support. We apply these models to the volatility of ‘STOXX Balkan 50 Equal Weight’ Index, which represents the largest and most liquid companies across eight Balkan countries. We use R 2.12.2 for the optimization, a free package for statistical computing and graphics

Determinants of international tourism in Albania: A panel data analysis

    No full text
The main aim of this research is the identification of some of the most relevant demand and supply determinants of tourism inflows to Albania, given the fundamental role of the tourism sector on the country’s economy. We formulate and estimate a gravity modelfor international tourism flows, considering some standard independent variables. The considered dataset includes twenty major origin countries over the period 2002-2021. According to the empirical results, all the parameters arestatistically significant and the R-squared value is satisfactory

Determinants of Tourism in Southern European Countries: A Dynamic Panel Data Model

    No full text
This paper aims to investigate some of the most important factors of tourism demand in Southern European Countries. The System Generalized Method of Moments is applied to a panel of 15 relevant tourist generating countries, for the period from 2005 to 2021. The considered explanatory variables follow the expected signs and have statistically significant effects on international tourist arrivals. The results suggest that tourism demand is negatively affected by bilateral distance, and global health emergencies such as COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, lagged tourist arrivals, per capita income in origin countries, and the existence of a common border have a positive effect on the considered dependent variable

Corruption and Emigration in the Western Balkans: Key Facts and Statistics.

    No full text
This work is focused on the phenomena of corruption and emigration in the Western Balkans (WBs) over the years from 2012 to 2022. Corruption remains a serious problem for WB societies and authorities. The high levels of corruption in WB countries threaten economic growth, increase inequality, discourage investments, and cause stress and frustration among citizens. As a consequence, a relevant portion of the populations considers emigration as the only viable alternative

The Trans-Regeneration of Geordie into Albanian: A case study

    No full text
In this article, we will introduce the concept of trans-regeneration: the way in which a traditional discourse (in this case a folk ballad) may be manifested as different texts as the story that it contains is told and retold both over time and over space. Our aim is to illustrate this process with the example of a wellknown English-language ballad Geordie (of uncertain origins), and how, in its lifespan, it has undergone numerous changes in content both in the various English and non-English versions as it has been appropriated and performed by artists in many other languages. We will argue that, because of its distinct nature, it is useful to describe such a process with a distinct term, trans-regeneration, which differently to terms like transcreation, takes into account the important artistic considerations underlying the choices made by the various rewriters and performers. Finally, we will describe a case study where Albanian-speaking students participated in a workshop analysing the various trans-regenerations of Geordie based on Christiansen (2022) and were invited to produce their own version in Albanian, thereby becoming themselves not just spectators but also actors in this process
