Cronaca di etimologia sanscrita. Parte IV
With this Report (here the n° 4) we present recent bibliographical information and, occasionally, renewed discussion about a series of etymological problems of Sanskrit, particularly Vedic, lexicon. Our principal aim is to supplement the Etymologisches Wörterbuch des Altindoarischen by M. Mayrhofer (last Nachträge und Berichtigun- gen 1999-2000). So with our Report we would like to provide a tool similar, even though more modest in its proposals, to the Chroniques d’etymologie grecque and latine published in the «Revue de Philologie, de Littérature et d’Histoire Anciennes» – whose points of reference were at the starting, in their turn, the etymological diction- aries respectively by Chantraine and Ernout-Meillet. In close connexion with etymol- ogy we will also consider problems related to the interpretation of Vedic texts and the reconstruction of cultural realia. e present number includes lexemes from aryamán- to the end of the letter a, along with a supplement to nn. 1-3.

Despite several genes having been found mutated in patients affected by Kallmann's syndrome (KS) and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HH), the majority of cases (>60%) still has no causative gene, suggesting that additional disease loci remain to be identified. The discovery of the involvement of the semaphorin 3A (SEMA3A) gene in KS is of great value for a better genetic framework and counselling of the disease.
In this research article, the authors report that a heterozygous deletion in the SEMA3A gene cosegregates with a KS phenotype. SEMA3A belongs to the class 3 semaphorins, a family of secreted molecules that modulate axonal guidance and neuronal migration events in the developing nervous system, and exert their actions by binding to neuropilins (NRP1 and NRP2) and plexins. Recently, by combining the analysis of genetically altered mice with in vitro models, we reported an essential role of SEMA3A in the development of the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons (see {1}, on which we are both authors), the population of hypothalamic neurons that exerts the physiological control of the reproductive axis. A defect in migration of GnRH neurons has been involved in the pathogenesis of the X-linked form of KS. Strikingly, mice lacking SEMA3A, or its signalling through both NRP1 and NRP2, recapitulate the anatomical features of altered GnRH neuron migration observed in KS.
Therefore, this report is an important clinical confirmation of results obtained in animal and cell models. On the other hand, the defects observed in mice may be suggestive of an impairment of GnRH neuron migration also in this KS patient. These results indicate that genomic sequencing analysis and studies on animal/cell models of KS/HH may synergistically interact to lead to a better elucidation of the pathogenesis of these diseases. The findings reported in the study have a broad significance in the search of new candidate genes responsible for more than 60% of the idiopathic forms of HHs. SEMA3A gene analysis must be included in the genetic screening of idiopathic HH.

Vector analogues of the Maggi-Rubinowicz theory of edge diffraction
The Maggi-Rubinowicz technique for scalar and electromagnetic fields is interpreted as a transformation of an integral over an open surface to a line integral around its rim. Maggi-Rubinowicz analogues are found for several vector physical optics representations. For diffraction from a circular aperture, a numerical comparison between these formulations shows the two methods are in agreement. To circumvent certain convergence difficulties in the Maggi-Rubinowicz integrals that occur as the observer approaches the shadow boundary, a variable mesh integration is used. For the examples considered, where the ratio of the aperture diameter to wavelength is about ten, the Maggi-Rubinowicz formulation yields an 8 to 10 fold decrease in computation time relative to the physical optics formulation

Artificial Light at Night: A New Challenge in Microphytobenthos Research
Artificial light at night (ALAN) has been recently recognized as a globally widespread anthropogenic disturbance, characterized by different intensities and spectra, as well as spatial and temporal variability. Among marine organisms, those living on coastal areas are particularly exposed to artificial light. Some recent studies anticipated a potential for influences of ALAN on microphytobenthos (MPB) on rocky shores, either direct or indirectly mediated by trophic relationships. Here we emphasize the need for further investigations in different habitats, as well as on synergistic interferences
with other stressors already impinging on coastal areas. The study of effects of ALAN poses new challenges in MPB research, including those related to the use of instruments for measuring both the light environment and the functioning of microbial photoautotrophs at night, and to the development of common monitoring approaches and manipulative experiments

Progesterone and estrogens in rat brain: modulation of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) receptor activity
Our data indicate that estrogens and progesterone can regulate the number of GABA receptors (as detected by [3H]muscimol binding assay) in rat brain. Both hormones act in selected areas. The extent of the effect (up to 160% increase) and the number of areas responsive suggest that sex hormones may play a very important role in the regulation of the functions of GABAergic transmission in the central nervous system
