CITATION: Maeno, S., et al. 2021. Unique niche-specific adaptation of fructophilic lactic acid bacteria and proposal of three Apilactobacillus species as novel members of the group. BMC Microbiology, 21:41, doi:10.1186/s12866-021-02101-9.The original publication is available at https://bmcmicrobiol.biomedcentral.comBackground: Fructophilic lactic acid bacteria (FLAB) found in D-fructose rich niches prefer D-fructose over Dglucose as a growth substrate. They need electron acceptors for growth on D-glucose. The organisms share carbohydrate metabolic properties. Fructobacillus spp., Apilactobacillus kunkeei, and Apilactobacillus apinorum are members of this unique group. Here we studied the fructophilic characteristics of recently described species Apilactobacillus micheneri, Apilactobacillus quenuiae, and Apilactobacillus timberlakei. Results: The three species prefer D-fructose over D-glucose and only metabolize D-glucose in the presence of electron acceptors. The genomic characteristics of the three species, i.e. small genomes and thus a low number of coding DNA sequences, few genes involved in carbohydrate transport and metabolism, and partial deletion of adhE gene, are characteristic of FLAB. The three species thus are novel members of FLAB. Reduction of genes involved in carbohydrate transport and metabolism in accordance with reduction of genome size were the common characteristics of the family Lactobacillaceae, but FLAB markedly reduced the gene numbers more than other species in the family. Pan-genome analysis of genes involved in metabolism displayed a lack of specific carbohydrate metabolic pathways in FLAB, leading to a unique cluster separation. Conclusions: The present study expanded FLAB group. Fructose-rich environments have induced similar evolution in phylogenetically distant FLAB species. These are examples of convergent evolution of LAB.https://systematicreviewsjournal.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13643-021-01654-0Publisher's versio

Inter-application communication during LHD consecutive short pulse discharge experiment

    No full text
LHD short pulse experiments are executed every three minutes. After the end of the discharge, the scientists must collect, analyze, visualize the last acquired data of the discharge, and prepare for the next discharge. From the beginning, the computer environment of the LHD (Large Helical Device) experiment has been built as a network distributed system, and various computers have been used for data acquisition or physical analysis. When one program is finished on one computer, that computer must send the results in order to the other computers to run programs. Smooth communication is required in order to finish all the tasks before the next discharge. To exchange the information among the applications running on the different computers, the authors have tried various methods, such as a commercial software to share the memory over the network, simple network file sharing method, IP multicast, web interfaces, and others. The purpose of this paper is to share our experiences of trial and error to build the network distributed systems for the consecutive plasma discharge experiments.journal articl

Some Remarks on Recent Issues in Speech-Perception Research

    No full text
This short report on speech perception is meant to supplement Michael Studdert-Kennedy's main report. Thus no attempt is made to give a comprehensive account of the state of the art in speech perception research, but discussions are given only on those topics that the author feels not to be sufficiently covered by the main report, or on which the author holds a different view. </jats:p

Remote device control and monitor system for the LHD deuterium experiments

    No full text
0000-0001-6388-4489Upon beginning the LHD deuterium experiment, the opportunity for maintenance work in the torus hall will be conspicuously reduced such that all instruments must be controlled remotely. The LHD data acquisition (DAQ) and archiving system have been using about 110 DAQ front-end, and the DAQ central control and monitor system has been implemented for their remote management. This system is based on the “multi-agent” model whose communication protocol has been unified. Since DAQ front-end electronics would suffer from the “single-event effect” (SEE) of D-D neutrons, software-based remote operation might become ineffective, and then securely intercepting or recycling the electrical power of the device would be indispensable for recovering from a non-responding fault condition. In this study, a centralized control and monitor system has been developed for a number of power distribution units (PDUs). This system adopts the plug-in structure in which the plug-in modules can absorb the differences among the commercial products of numerous vendors. The combination of the above-mentioned functionalities has led to realizing the flexible and highly reliable remote control infrastructure for the plasma diagnostics and the device management in LHD.journal articl

Stndies on Propentdyopent Part II Studies on Propentdyopent from Urobilin 1X, α and it's clinical significance

The author observed on the demonstrative method of propentdyopent as the differential method between stercobilin and urobilin IX, α by W. Stich and put forward the use of photometric observation with the propentdyopent reaction for the identification of propentdyopent. And the results of it's use were as follows. 1. Standing for one hour at 37°C. after the addition of 3% H(2)O(2) in 1/5 dosis of material, then standing for two hours at 37°C. after the addition of Mn O(2), the formation of propentdyopent was observed, and it displayed the absorption maximum at 315 mμ and the absorption maximum of the coloured solution by the pentdyopent reaction displayed at 518 mμ. 2. It was recognized that the value of log T 580/T 520 showed the formation of propentdyopent, i.e. the contained dosis of mesobilirubinogen, on the occasion of positive Ehrlich's aldehydo reaction, employing the above method to human urine

2011-03-31In this article, the necessity of inter-university cooperation to strengthen research and development (R&D) functions in university libraries in Japan is discussed. As background for the discussion, the author reviews research activities in general in libraries and information science field in Japan, discusses the necessity of R&D on university library activities, and points out the importance of the role of university libraries having R&D departments. An analysis of the R&D activities in two Japanese university libraries and the relating policy documents reveals two major expected roles of R&D departments, namely the R&D itself and the human resource development to be achieved by librarians' participation in R&D activities. Finally, the author proposes ways to meet such expectations in order to focus inter-university cooperation in R&D.departmental bulletin pape
