Recent near Earth satellite flux data: Contributions in the definition of the interplanetary flux at 1 AU heliocentric distance

    No full text
Recently analysed hypervelocity impact data from retrieved satellites are summarised. Analyses of perforation data show that mean densities are low (around 1.5-2 gcm3g-cm^3), impact velocities are consistent with radar meteor observations and that high aspect ration particles are not found. Mean data for Fmax>30μmF_{max}>30\mu m agrees well with the Grun et al. Interplanetary flux model, though there is evidence of a strong bias towards the Earth apex of motion direction. For Fmax<30μmF_{max}<30\mu m the data at LDEF's altitude is dominated by space debris

A detailed study of the reflection nebula, NGC 7023

    No full text
Polarisation and intensity maps in three broad wavebands are presented for the reflection nebula NGC7023. The data are used to investigate the structure, dust distribution and grain characteristics of the material surrounding the central illuminating star HD200775 of the reflection nebula. Calculations have been made, using a Monte-Carlo technique, for various parameters representing the structure and content of the nebula to predict and explain the observed measurements. The successful description of the observations puts severe restrictions on the nebular parameters. It is found that the geometry of the nebula is in the form of an extended cloud with a foreground conical cavity in which the illuminating star is situated. The dust grains are required to have a power law size distribution of the form n(a) = a(^4.05) and grain material corresponding to silicates is most likely although ice cannot be excluded

The resignation of Secretary of the Navy James Webb: a perspective from the present

    No full text
This thesis explains the resignation of James Webb as Secretary of the Navy in February 1988. Multiple interviews conducted by the author and several others revealed the combination of politics and personal motivation behind his departure. In an era when defense expenditures were beginning to wane, Webb's insistence on maintaining the United States Navy's force structure in the face of Secretary of Defense Carlucci's unwillingness to do the same, led to his resignation. His opposition to the reduction in force structure was rooted in his fundamental belief that ft was unwise for the United States, as a maritime nation, to undercut a service upon which it relied so heavily. Examination of Webb's professional life, with an emphasis on his numerous writings, conveyed his protracted association with, and critical thinking on, issues of military and national defense policy. Research into his professional development was central to the investigation. It established a consistency between his position on the Navy force structure issue and related topics about which he wrote and spoke concerning roles, missions, and composition of the American military.Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.U.S. Marine Corps (U.S.M.C.) author.http://archive.org/details/theresignationof10945935

Совершенные призмоиды и гипотеза о минимальном числе граней центрально-симметричных многогранников

In this paper we introduce and study a class of centrally symmetric polytopes – perfect prismatoids – and some its properties related to the famous conjecture concerning face numbers of centrally symmetric polytopes are proved. It is proved that any Hanner polytope is a perfect prismatoid and any perfect prismatoid is affine equivalent to some 0/1-polytope.
