Harmony and discord within the English ‘counter-culture’, 1965-1975, with particular reference to the ‘rock operas’ Hair, Godspell, Tommy and Jesus Christ Superstar

PhDThis thesis considers the discrete, historically-specific theatrical and musical sub-genre of ‘Rock Opera’ as a lens through which to examine the cultural, political and social changes that are widely assumed to have characterised ‘The Sixties’ in Britain. The musical and dramatic texts, creation and production of Hair (1967), Tommy (1969), Godspell (1971), Jesus Christ Superstar (1970) and other neglected ‘Rock Operas’ of the period are analysed. Their great popularity with ‘mainstream’ audiences is considered and contrasted with the overwhelmingly negative and often internally contradictory reaction towards them from the English ‘counter-culture’. This examination offers new insights into both the ‘counter-culture’ and the ‘mainstream’ against which it claimed to define and differentiate itself. The four ‘Rock Operas’, two of which are based upon Christian scriptures, are considered as narratives of spiritual quest. The relationship between the often controversial quests for re-defined forms of faith and the apparently precipitous ‘secularization’ and ‘de-Christianization’ of British society during the 1960s and 1970s is considered. The thesis therefore analyses the ‘Rock Operas’ as significant, enlightening prisms through which to view many of the profound societal debates – over ‘faith’ and ‘belief’ in the widest senses, sexuality, the Vietnam war, generational conflict, drugs and ‘spiritual enlightenment’, and race – which were, to some considerable extent, elevated onto the national, political agenda by the activities of the broadly-defined ‘counter-culture’. It considers subsequent representations of the ‘counter-culture’ as the root of a contested but enduring popular legacy of ‘The Sixties' as a period of profound cultural change

The author reviews the problem whether the Sind-Rajasthan desert of the Indo-Pakistan sub-continent is of recent origin and which factors are responsible for its creation: climatic change, shifting of rivers, floods, or yet social causes such as wars and man's abuse of his environment resulting in ecological imbalance

Arithmetic density and congruences of \ell-regular bipartitions IIII

Let B(n) B_{\ell}(n) denote the number of \ell-regular bipartitions of n.n. In 2013, Lin \cite{Lin2013} proved a density result for B4(n).B_4(n). He showed that for any positive integer k,k, B4(n)B_4(n) is almost always divisible by 2k.2^k. In this article, we improved his result. We prove that B2αm(n)B_{2^{\alpha}m}(n) and B3αm(n)B_{3^{\alpha}m}(n) are almost always divisible by arbitrary power of 22 and 33 respectively. Further, we obtain an infinities families of congruences and multiplicative formulae for B2(n)B_2(n) and B4(n)B_4(n) by using Hecke eigenform theory. Next, by using a result of Ono and Taguchi on nilpotency of Hecke operator, we also find an infinite families of congruences modulo arbitrary power of 22 satisfied by B2α(n).B_{2^{\alpha}}(n).Comment: Comments are welcome. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2406.06224; text overlap with arXiv:2302.11830; text overlap with arXiv:2405.05274 by other author

Efficient FPGA realization of inner-products of variable vectors

    No full text
An Inner product is a generalization of the dot product (also called Scalar product). It is a method to multiply vectors together. After which, it produce a scalar result. Nonetheless inner product is different with dot product, where dot product can be denoted into either algebraically or geometrically ways, while inner product is an operation that takes two equal-length array number and return a single algebraic number. Since inner product is a very important concept for researches, so there is a significant meaning to familiarize with its principle, find out the advantages and disadvantages of inner product, compare the differences between inner product and other arithmetic method, and improvement on the operation efficiency of inner product. In this report, the author has introduced the concepts of inner-product and the proposed design for inner-product of variable vectors, also analyzed and compared several different methods to improve the efficiency of the proposed DA (Distributed arithmetic)-based implementation of inner-product of variable vectors. Pipelining is one of the basic technologies to improve the data arrival time for implementation of inner-product. Reuse of on small N-point inner-product to compute larger inner product length will extremely decrease the data arrival time which will economize the whole time consumption of the real system. However, this method will increase the usage of LUTs (lookup tables) and Register slices. DA (Distributed arithmetic) has been widely used for implementation of inner-products, and the proposed design introduced in this report is a novel time efficient flexible solution for bit-parallel DA-based implementation of inner-product of variable vectors. From the analytical results in this report, it is shown that proposed structures for input word-lengths L = 8 and L = 16, respectively are nearly 5.4% and 36% faster than the reference design (conventional multiplier-based implementation) in average for different inner-product length (N = 8, 16, 32 and 64). Whereas, the number of devices utilization of proposed DA-based design are significant larger than the reference multiplier-based design.Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Engineering

COVID 19 fatalities burden in Asian countries: An analysis of pattern and determinants

    No full text
Covid 19 pandemic has severe implications on health and life of people. Asia being the most populous region has higher fatalities burden. Health infrastructure, stringent preventive measures by the government and public participation through adhering to social distancing have influence to check on fatalities' burden. The level of Social capital as well as voters' participation in a particular country can have influence on containment of COVID cases and fatalities. In this context, the main objectives of this study are to analyse pattern and trend of death burden for 45 Asian countries and impact of stringency measures by government, and voters’ turnout ratio on death burden. However, for regression analysis only 32 countries are taken into account considering the availability of data for all variables. Multiple linear regression analysis is employed in a cross-sectional framework and Ordinary least square estimation technique with heteroscedastic adjusted standard errors have been used for estimation of coefficients. The results show that southern Asia contributes the highest share of fatality cases in total fatality cases of Asia with 71.43% share. It also has the highest share of confirmed cases in total confirmed cases of Asia with 71.72%. However, when we take the population into account, Western Asia leads in the share of confirmed COVID-19 cases and its associated fatality cases per million populations in Asia as compared to other Asian regions. The factors like health infrastructure and voters’ turnover ratio are found to be significant and potential in reducing the new deaths per million populations. Though the coefficient of Stringency index has been negative and it did not emerge to be significant in Asian countries. The COVID related fatalities in Asian region are urban centric and urbanization proxy is found to be positive and significant. Diabetes prevalence rate has some heterogeneous result and in the present study its coefficient is not in the hypothesized direction. . The Countries should ramp up health infrastructure and necessary preparedness to deal with the subsequent waves and COVID related fatalities. Importance need to be given people's participation and their shared responsibilities in dealing with COVID cases and checking on fatalities. The realisation of social responsibility among the masses can lead to community participation and adhering to the protocols imposed by the government and helps in checking on spread of virus and associated death
