Correlates of smoking behavior among older adolescents:
This study developed and tested theory to gain a better understanding of smoking behavior among older adolescents. This correlational study empirically tested theoretical relationships postulated between the dependent variable, smoking behavior and each of the independent variables of (a) depression, (b) social support and (c) smoking resistance self efficacy. This study also tested the relationship of smoking resistance self efficacy and (a) social support and (b) depression. In addition, this study examined two mediational models, which tested the role of smoking resistance self efficacy as a mediator in the relationship of (a) social support and smoking behavior, and (b) depression and smoking behavior.
A convenience sample of 364 college students 18-21 years of age was recruited from a large urban public college in the South Eastern region of New York State. Volunteers completed the study instrument which consisted of a demographic data sheet and three standardized instruments.
There were statistically significant negative relationships between smoking resistance self efficacy and (a) smoking behavior, and (b) depression. There was a statistically significant positive relationship between depression and smoking behavior. Additionally, smoking resistance self efficacy was a mediator of the relationship between depression and smoking behavior. The study did not provide evidence of a statistically significant relationship between (a) smoking behavior and social support and (b) smoking resistance self efficacy and social support. Smoking resistance self efficacy failed to act as a mediator of the relationship between social support and smoking behavior.
In summary, this study contributes to theory based nursing research in determining the role of SSE as (1) a mediator of the relationship between smoking behavior and depression, and (2) a strong correlate of smoking behavior. Through the explication of SSE as mediator of the relationship between depression and smoking behavior, this study invites further nursing research, specifically those employing interventions designed to enhance SSE. The findings of this study have implications for nursing interventions targeted to both current smokers and smoking initiation prevention. In addition, this research identifies a need for further theory-driven study of the relationship of depression and smoking behavior among adolescents.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical references (p. 105-115)by Susan Me

Early postpartum luteal function after treatment with progestin and(or) gonadotropin-releasing hormone in dairy cattle
Progestin (Norgestomet®) and(or) repeated low-dose infusions of GnRH (Cystorelin@)
influenced the lifespan of the first corpus luteum after an induced ovulation. Holstein cows
(n=32) were assigned at calving to four groups. Cows were treated with blank ear implants
(days 2 to 9 after calving) and saline infusion (48 hr on days 10 arid II), progestin ear
implants and saline infusion, blank implants and GnRH infusion, or progestin implants and
GnRH infusion prior to a GnRH-induced ovulation (day 12). Four primiparous and four
multiparous cows were assigned to each treatment. Fewer cows treated with progestin/GnRH
ovulated in response to the GnRH challenge. However, short cycles (<17 days in duration)
were prevented in all cows (n= 16) treated with progestin. In addition, all multiparous cows
treated with blank implants and GnRH infusion had normal cycles. Results of this study
suggested that progestin and GnRH may have altered follicular development, thereby
preventing the short-lived corpus luteum and inducing a normal estrous cycle as cows
overcame anestrus early postpartum
Reliability and validity of Mee-Bunney Psychological Pain Assessment Scale Turkish version
In this study, we aimed to investigate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Mee Bunney Psychological Pain Assessment Scale (MBPPAS), which questions the frequency, intensity and acute period of psychological pain. We also aimed to investigate whether psychological pain allows measuring acute suicidal behavior; and whether there were different levels of psychological pain in suicide-related disorders. The study included 73 patients with major depressive disorder, 50 patients with bipolar disorder and 77 healthy controls. MBPPAS, Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation, Beck Hopelessness Scale, Physical Pain Scale, and Psychache Scale were filled by the participants. In the internal consistency, the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was found to be 0.95 and the item-total score correlation coefficients were between 0.51 and 0.89. Explanatory factor analysis showed that the scale was loaded under the single factor, which had an eigenvalue of 7.02, explaining 70.23% of the total variance. Factor loads of the items were found between 0.57 and 0.92. Discriminant function analysis showed that the scale classified the patient group and the healthy group, also the patients with and without suicide attempt, and each group was classified as successfully when the three groups were considered together. Besides the fact that the Turkish version of the scale is valid and reliable, it has been shown that it can be useful (partially) in the studies conducted with patients in the acute phase and in distinguishing disorders from each other in suicide-related entities such as mood disorders. © 2019, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature
Etiology and outcome of penetrating keratoplasty in bullous keratopathy post-cataract surgery vs post-glaucoma surgery
Purpose To investigate the causes of bullous keratopathy (BK) in the Korean population and analyze the results of penetrating keratoplasty (PK) in BK eyes associated with the top two causes: pseudophakic bullous keratopathy (PBK) and glaucoma surgery-associated BK (GBK). Methods Medical records were reviewed of patients diagnosed with BK at a tertiary referral center between 2010 and 2020. The predisposing conditions, clinical characteristics and therapeutic outcomes after PK were analyzed and compared. Results Of total 340 BK eyes, 70% (238 eyes) were associated with ocular surgery; most commonly, cataract surgery (48%, 162 eyes) and glaucoma surgery/laser (21%, 70 eyes). The BK onset was faster following glaucoma surgery/laser (91.7 ± 94.4 months) than following cataract surgery (160.7 ± 138.0 months, p < 0.001). The median survival time of allografts was shorter in GBK than in PBK (24.0 vs 51.0 months, p = 0.020). Best-corrected logMAR visual acuities were lower in GBK than in PBK after PK (1.4 ± 0.7 vs 0.9 ± 0.6, p = 0.017 at one year; 1.8 ± 0.7 vs 1.1 ± 0.8, p = 0.043 at three years). Conclusions Intraocular surgery is the major predisposing condition of BK in Korea. GBK developed earlier and its therapeutic outcome was poorer, compared to PBK. © 2023 Jung et al. The Rape of the Author: How Charles Mee (re)defines authorship and its manifestation in his play Big Love
This English Senior Essay offers an introduction to the work of contemporary American playwright Charles Mee and his (re)making project. It examines his play Big Love, paying particular attention to the characters’ suggestion that rape is not necessarily a sexual violation, but the act of taking anything by force. The essay argues that Mee’s figurative rape of other author’s texts is necessary to free writing from copyright restrictions and to ultimately establish a free textual exchange among writers. Given that this rape analogy is not Mee’s own, the essay ultimately suggests that the playwright literalizes a long-standing literary theory to suggest that textual appropriation is a manifestation of writing, rather than an assault on its conventions
