Precast Concrete Elements for Accelerated Bridge Construction Final Report, Volume 1-1. Laboratory Testing of Precast Substructure Components: Boone County Bridge: TR-561, January 2009
In July 2006, construction began on an accelerated bridge project in Boone County, Iowa that was composed of precast substructure elements and an innovative, precast deck panel system. The superstructure system consisted of full-depth deck panels that were
prestressed in the transverse direction, and after installation on the prestressed concrete girders, post-tensioned in the longitudinal direction. Prior to construction, laboratory tests were completed on the precast abutment and pier cap elements. The substructure testing was to determine the punching shear strength of the elements. Post-tensioning testing and verification of the precast deck system was performed in the field. The forces in the tendons provided by the contractor were verified and losses due to the post-tensioning operation were measured. The stress (strain) distribution in the deck panels due to the post-tensioning was also measured and analyzed. The entire construction process for this bridge system was documented. Representatives from the Boone County Engineers Office, the prime contractor, precast fabricator, and researchers from Iowa State University provided feedback and suggestions for improving the constructability of this design

Binaural Model-Based Speech Intelligibility Enhancement and Assessment in Hearing Aids
The enhancement of speech intelligibility in noise is still the main subject in hearing aid research. Based on the advanced results obtained with the hearing glasses, in the present research the speech intelligibility is even further improved by the application of binaural post-filters. The functionalities of these filters are related to the principles of the auditory scene analysis. A statistical analysis of binaural cues in noise at the output of different hearing aids, the utilization of a Bayesian classifier in the source separation process and an evolutionary optimization against binaural models of speech intelligibility provides a comprehensive understanding for the utilization of binaural post-filters in adverse environments. As the listening ease and a fair amount of speech quality are mandatory in speech enhancement, tradeoffs between speech intelligibility and quality were studied in terms of the preservation of natural binaural cues and the suppression of musical noise.Imaging Science and TechnologyApplied Science
Highly directive endfire loudspeaker array
A loudspeaker system with an endfire array of three or more loudspeakers (Z n, n = 3, 4,..N) arranged on a line. The system has a set of filters (Fn, n = 3, 4,..N), each loudspeaker (Zn) being connected to one corresponding filter (Fn). The filters (Fn) are super resolution beamforming filters such as to provide the endfire array with a pre- designed directivity index (DI) and a pre-designed noise sensitivity (NS).Applied Science

The microphone array has a flexible length of 10 to 76 m and covers the octave band from 125 to 1000 Hz (later extended to 2000 Hz). The angular resolution is 1.5 degrees.Applied Science
Larry Boone
This 1965 photograph shows Larry Boone and was sent to Hubert and Leona Hayes during the 17th Mountain Youth Jamboree. Founder and director of the Mountain Youth Jamboree, Hubert H. Hayes (1901-1964) auditioned and directed youth to perform in folk dance, music, and folk and ballad singing. The jamboree was held in the Asheville City Auditorium (now known as Thomas Wolfe Auditorium) from 1948 to 1973, and Hayes’ wife, Leona Trantham Hayes (1913-1989) continued to direct the program after his death in 1964. Hubert Hayes was an author, playwright, and alumni of Duke University
Binaural CASA algorithm for speech source localization: Advancements in noisy and reverberant situations
In this thesis a binaural CASA localization algorithm is developed for the implementation in a binaural hearing aid with downstream speech enhancement. Two binaural CASA localization algorithms, based on the Albani model, are proposed to enhance the localization performance in noisy and reverberant acoustic environments. The Albani model is extended with a zero-lag interaural coherence (IC) time window pre-selection, detection of multiple sources per time-window, coincidence detection between interaural level and time differences (ILD and ITD) and a lagged time window comparison, in the proposed extended Albani algorithm. A further addition to the proposed extended Albani algorithm with a binaural cue selector based on an inhibition process, is proposed in the extended Albani algorithm with cue selection by inhibition. Performed simulations show that the extended Albani algorithm performs the best in noisy situations up to a SNR level of -12 dB and the extended Albani algorithm with cue selection by inhibition performs the best in reverberant situations up to a reverberation time of 2.0 s. These proposed localization algorithms show a better performance than the present known CASA methods in both noise and reverberation.Laboratory for Acoustical Imaging and Sound ControlImaging Science & TechnologyApplied Science
Daniel Boone: An American Life
The embodiment of the American hero, the man of action, the pathfinder, Daniel Boone represents the great adventure of his age—the westward movement of the American people. Daniel Boone: An American Life brings together over thirty years of research in an extraordinary biography of the quintessential pioneer. Based on primary sources, the book depicts Boone through the eyes of those who knew him and within the historical contexts of his eighty-six years. The story of Daniel Boone offers new insights into the turbulent birth and growth of the nation and demonstrates why the frontier forms such a significant part of the American experience.
Michael A. Lofaro is Lindsay Young Professor of American and Cultural Studies and American literature at the University of Tennessee. A recognized authority on the early frontier and importance of frontier heroes such as Boone and Crockett in American life, he is the author or editor of twelve books, an online database, and over seventy-five articles.
