L’univers nonsensique de Fouad Laroui
Through colorful characters who populate the unique and nonsensical universe imagined by Fouad Laroui in his collection of short stories Les Noces fabuleuses du Polonais, the author puts forward one of the key functions of humor which plays as a warning against conformity to conventions. With various incredible situations, misunderstandings, high-spirited interactions, laughter bursts out thanks to a cleverly distilled humor illuminating stories that are sometimes, after all, very ordinary. Our purpose is to analyze the levels of humor in the collection, in order to try to understand how this state of mind and this type of situations which make us laugh, under its multiple facets of irony, derision, comical, laughable and absurd, become the parade against an incoherent world.

The Lebanese French speaking poetry reached maturity in the fifties and the sixties. Deeply influenced by surrealism, the modern generation of authors is yet represented by a poet whose art and views go against the surrealist sensibility of his contemporaries. Fouad Gabriel Naffah (1925-1983) was a poet in all means, but never got the recognition he hoped for. On the fringes of the Lebanese society as well as of the literary context, yet, he seizes the real and integrates the Lebanese landscape into a speculative creative process allowing poetic living . The creation of an intellectual poetic language raises description to the rank of cosmogony. Representing space as highly structured and paradoxical brings out new relationships between the subject and the world that are governed by the principle of immanence. Therefore, Naffah s work can be read, oddly enough, as an original approach of lyricism, and poetic creation, brought into actualization or explained by the author, can be understood as a spontaneous phenomenology. Nevertheless, obstacles to such an ambitious conception of poetry rise mostly in itself, so much so that Naffah s poems are, at the same time, a demonstration of fullness and a scene of collapse.PARIS13-BU Droit-Lettres (930792101) / SudocSudocFranceF
Structural study using 29 Si and 27 Al Solid State MAS NMR and compressive strength analysis of metakaolin-based geopolymer paste
Geopolymers are hardened aluminosilicate gel that develop strength via the crosslinking of tetrahedral silicate and aluminate. Past Research has highlighted a wide range of mechanical properties of geopolymer synthesised from various aluminosilicate materials. This research focuses on studying the effect of variation in the percentages of metakaolin, sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide at a fixed water to solids ratio on the development of geopolymer structure and compressive strength. Kaolin was thermally treated and XRD and FTIR traced the changes in crystalline Kaolin and its transformation into a more disordered structure of metakaolin. Characterisation techniques were used for the study of geopolymer produced. FTIR analysis illustrated the changes in the characteristic bands of metakaolin after being activated with sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide to form geopolymer. The 27Al and 29Si Solid State MAS NMR spectra confirmed the formation of polymerised tetrahedral silicate interconnected to tetrahedral aluminate in the form of Q4(4Al) and Q4(3Al) which are responsible for the attained compressive strength of geopolymer. The produced geopolymers exhibited high early compressive strength and high 28-day compressive strength in the range of 30–81 MPa. This promotes the use of geopolymers as a replacement to Ordinary Portland cement especially in targeted construction applications. This study is part of Ph.D of author Heba Fouad and the PhD was a fellowship granted by Yousef Jameel Foundation. Also, Heba Fouad also would like to show her gratitude to Dr. Abdel Hamid Emwas and Dr. Mariusz Jaremko for conducting Solid State MAS NMR samples in KAUST Core lab

Without explicit in-depth prior knowledge of the underlying processes, planning experts learn to form empirical associations between project problems and potential solutions. Almost in all situations, their experience is described through examples from previous projects as opposed to structured and principled knowledge. Given the lack of formal definitions and structured knowledge, transferring expert human planners' comprehensive knowledge to automated planning systems proves to be complex. And, while substantial research is conducted and many automated planning systems were developed, the complexities of actual construction projects on one hand, and the nuances between different construction approaches, on the other, have rendered the manual creation of explicit knowledge representations extremely tedious and, in many cases, entirely infeasible. Hence, most --if not all-- construction projects still rely on a single or a small group of experienced practitioners to manually perform their planning and scheduling activities.
This dissertation presents a suite of machine learning (ML) and natural language processing (NLP) based methods and systems to learn formal construction planning and sequencing knowledge representations from existing construction records. The learned knowledge is leveraged to (1) generate lists of potential successor activities given a sequence of predecessors, (2) retrieve lists of predecessor activities required to enable the execution of a sequence of successors, (3) critique the quality of logic of an input construction schedule by identifying missing or wrong logical dependencies, (4) schedule a set of unordered activities, (5) align weekly work plans (WWPs) to master schedules following a semi-automated human-in-the-loop approach, (6) identify the implicit dependency constraints governing predecessor-successor relationships and their roles and flexibilities in an input construction schedule, and (7) revise lookahead plans to mitigate the effects of unavoidable activity delays. All the developed methods learn using free form activity descriptions and Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) tags only without any prior assumptions or requirements on the expressions used to represent construction activities. They are trained and tested on a dataset of 32 construction schedules collected from real projects from different industry segments and various construction companies. Quantitative and qualitative results are presented to show the validity and the potential of the proposed methods. Limitations and future work are discussed in detail
