Improving Satellite-based precipitation estimates: A spatiotemporal object-oriented approach to error analysis and correction

    No full text
Satellite Precipitation Products (SPP) have been revolutionary in water resources management and flood-related disaster response. However, estimating extreme rainfall is subject to multiple systematic and aleatory errors that need to be corrected. This dissertation addresses errors in satellite data to estimate extreme rainfall events in space and time beyond the pixel. The Spatiotemporal Contiguous Object-based Rainfall Analysis method (ST-CORA) is developed to analyse errors in SPP for rainstorm estimations based on their main physical features in space and time (volume, intensity, duration, extension, orientation, speed, among others). Using ST-CORA, systematic errors due to volume and displacement in space and time are corrected in a novel bias-corrected method called ST-CORAbico. Case studies in two monsoonal areas in South America and Southeast Asia have been used to analyse the hydrological response of systematic errors in flood predictions and evaluate error reduction in non-operational and operational bias correction applications. Finally, the dissertation describes further implementations of ST-CORA in developing an operational system for rainstorm monitoring called Rainstorm tracker. This web-based platform is designed to monitor and alert decision-makers about the severity of rainstorm events over the Lower Mekong basin in near-real and real-time.Water Resource

Roberto Ruiz Laverde.

This collection (which is kept on the shelves of his heirs and that few people have seen) contains fragments of a singular vision, made up of thousands of photographic records in which there are various spaces, landscapes, characters, trades, objects, structures, situations and events that, through the forms they reflect, speak to us of a particular way of seeing the Colombia of the time. In the present degree work it is intended to approach the photographic archive of Roberto Ruiz in several directions. First of all through a curation process: thanks to direct access to the visual documents -negatives, contact sheets, development, prints made by the photographer-, a selection of images will be made that will function as an illustration and sample of the complete archive (based on some of its fragments), and as a mobile center from which the discourse and the approach are revealed. Second, as an approach to the visual: construction of a theoretical apparatus for reading impressions within the social and cultural context, and within the psychic and ideological limits of the atmosphere in which they were produced. Third, as a configuration of an idea of personal vision: from the traces collected from the artist's life, shaping the figure of the author as the creative will behind the photographs and as a style that becomes impersonal through that vision. In this way, an approach will be made through the History of photography in Colombia, in a particular decade, through the analysis of an unknown collection, and a monograph of an author who left a work that dialogues -in aesthetic and intellectual terms, of forms and contents - with the pieces of some of the most recognized photographers of the seventies in Colombia and that resonates with a deep lineage in the history of photography in Latin America

Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad: intergroup contact, personality, and weight bias

Background: Higher body weight individuals are frequently the targets of negative weight-based attitudes, at times resulting in discrimination. Workplace discrimination harms the well-being of larger individuals by increasing their stress levels and reducing their chances of being hired or promoted. Thus, understanding why people hold these negative attitudes is important. Further, little is known about the role personality characteristics (e.g., essentialist thinking) play in the formation of these attitudes. The aim of this study then was to examine how body weight affects competence-based judgements of female employees, and furthermore, to determine whether an individual’s personality features influence these judgements. Methods: College students (N = 161) from a northeastern university were recruited to participate in this study, and the study took place entirely online. Participants were mostly female (60.9%), the average age was 20.64 years (SD = 3.29), and the average BMI was 25.40 (SD = 5.06). Our sample was ethnically diverse, with participants identifying as White (45.3%), Black (29.8%), Hispanic (18.0%), Asian (9.3%), and other (3.7%). Participants responded to twelve images of three identically dressed women of varying body sizes. Participants were asked to rate each image on a 6-item global competence measure (Howelett et al., 2015), completed personality and bias measures, and were asked what they believed the study was about. Results: Most participants (82%) reported believing the study was about weight/physical appearance and how that influenced judgments of work ability or competence. Regardless of their understanding of the purpose of the study, participants still assigned significantly lower competence ratings when the target female was ‘obese’ (M = 4.30, SD = 1.15) than ‘overweight’ (M = 4.81, SD = 0.96) or ‘normal weight’ (M = 4.90, SD = 1.00; F(2, 159) = 26.53, p < .001, η2 = .14). Using Repeated Measures ANCOVAs, we found that Essentialist Entitativity beliefs had a small but not significant effect on competence ratings (F(2, 159) = 2.26, p = .108, η2 = .02), and Need for Cognitive Closure had a small significant effect (F(2,159) = 3.88, p = .022, η2 = .02). Discussion: These findings are consistent with past research revealing a link between ratings of competence and body size. Specifically, individuals with larger body sizes were deemed to be less competent than individuals with smaller body sizes. This poster was presented at the first annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity while the author was an undergraduate student at Rutgers University-Camden

Photocatalytic activity enhancement by noble metal deposition on faceted F-TiO<inf>2</inf> synthesised by microwave assisted method. A study of selective oxidation of gas-phase ethanol in a FBPR reactor

    No full text
In the present work, fluorinated titanium dioxide (TiO2-F) with high exposition of facet {001} was prepared by following a facile and high yield hydrothermal method assisted by microwave. This faceted TiO2 was then modified by Au or Ag deposition at two different metal loadings (0.125 and 0.25 wt%). A wide physicochemical characterisation of the materials was performed. X-ray difractograms showed high {001} facet exposition in all materials. By X-ray fluorescence it was found that the different samples contained about 5% of fluor. All samples presented high surface area and high uniformity and homogeneity of particles, which highlights the good properties that can be achieved by the microwave synthesis method compared to conventional hydrothermal methods. Oxidation state of the noble metals was studied by XPS. On the other side, TiO2-F and the metallised titania powders were immobilised on polystyrene pellets (PS) for evaluating their gas photocatalytic activity in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) decontamination by following the reaction of photoxidation of ethanol in gas phase. It was found that activity was considerably improved by the addition of noble metals, obtaining high conversion and selectivity to CO2. It is remarkable that the selectivity to CO is almost zero. The highest efficiency was found for the faceted TiO2-F sample with the lowest Au loading (0.125 wt%) immobilised on PS where 91% ethanol conversion and 100% CO2 selectivity were achieved. Different reaction variables were also studied. This Special Issue is dedicated to honor the retirement of Prof. Santiago Esplugas at the Universitat de Barcelona (UB, Spain), a key figure in the area of Catalytic Advanced Oxidation Processes M. Weight bias in the workplace: does personality matter?

    No full text
Higher body-weight individuals are frequently stigmatized and face prejudice and discrimination.Additionally, experiences of weight stigmatization are associated with several negative consequences. However, less is known about effective means for reducing weight bias. One strategy that has shown success in other areas of prejudice reduction, yet is less tested for weight bias reduction, is intergroup contact. Other research has emphasized the importance of person-based factors (Social Dominance Orientation (SDO); Right Wing Authoritarianism (RWA); etc.) in the development of prejudice. Less is known, however, about the role these variables play in the formation of negative attitudes toward higher body weight individuals, or how these variables might influence attitude change in the contact context. Participants (N = 639) were recruited from a northeastern university, and the study was completed online. The sample was a majority female (75.1%) and the average age was 20.80 (sd = 4.81). As expected, SDO and RWA were both significantly positively correlated with weight bias (rs = 0.13-0.45). Additionally, positive contact was significantly negatively correlated with weight bias (rs = -0.32- -0.37) and negative contact was significantly positively correlated with weight bias (rs = 0.36-0.40). Also as expected, positive contact was more frequent (M = 4.73, sd = 1.31) than negative contact (M = 2.33, sd = 1.15). Finally, in a simultaneous regression predicting weight bias (R2 = .21, F (2, 637) = 85.88, p <.001), negative contact (β = 0.33, t(635) = 9.36, p < .001) was found to have a stronger effect than positive contact (β = 0.29, t(635) = -8.20, p < .001). Personality effects were mixed and minimal. This study adds to the literature by examining the effects of positive and negative contact on weight bias. Consistent with previous studies, we found that although positive contact with higher body weight individuals in more common than negative contact, negative contact has a stronger influence on negative weight-based attitudes. This poster was presented at the first annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity while the author was an undergraduate student at Rutgers University-Camden

Armadillos, hippopotamuses and biopolitics in "The sound of things falling" by Juan Gabriel Vásquez

"The Sound of things falling” (2011), a novel by Colombian author Juan Gabriel Vásquez, explores the relationship between humans and animals within a society traumatized by violence. In this article I briefly discuss human/animal studies in literature; I then outline Giorgio Agamben’s theory of biopolitics in the context of human/animal studies. Utilizing Agamben’s framework, I offer a biopolitical reading of “The sound of things falling”. I explore how biopolitics illuminates the life of a pet armadillo that appears in the novel, an animal that scholars have ignored in literary criticism. I argue that the armadillo’s life reveals the biopolitical system thatupholds specious boundaries separating humans and animals. I examine how the armadillo exposes the categories of sovereign power functioning in the novel, particularly as they relate to drug trafficking. I also offer an analysis of the hippopotamuses within the novel, a topic that scholars have discussedat length. I contend that literary criticism has overlooked the character of Ricardo Laverde with respect to his relationship to the hippos. I develop a reading which highlights the connections between Laverde and the hippos, not to interpret the animals merely through an anthropocentric lens as a metaphor for Laverde, but to show the interweaving of their stories as warnings against the violence in biopolitical formations. Through these readings I demonstrate that Vázquez employs animals in the novel to emphasize the vulnerability of all bodies within the biopolitical structures and institutions in Colombian society.“El ruido de las cosas al caer” (2011), la novela del colombiano Juan Gabriel Vásquez, explora la relación entre los humanos y los animales en una sociedad traumatizada por la violencia.

The aim of the present work was to evaluate the effectiveness of flocculation-photocatalysis as combined processes in the treatment of dairy industries wastewater. Different commercial and lab prepared flocculants and photocatalysts were evaluated. All the materials prepared were extensively characterized. Commercial materials presented the best physicochemical properties and performance in the treatment of the studied wastewater. On one hand, all the photocatalysts evaluated showed bactericidal activity for E. Coli, total coliforms and other enterobacteriaceae. Total elimination of E. coli was obtained by using commercial TiO2 P25 Evonik, under 120 W/m2 of UV–vis light intensity and 5 h of total illumination time. Other species of bacteria remained after treatment under these conditions. It was also found that the highest light intensity of 120 W/m2 led to increase the Chemical Oxygen Demand and Total Organic Carbon in the samples treated, it can be due to the faster formation of new organic compounds as intermediaries during the photocatalytic reactions at the highest photonic flux. Flocculation pre-treatment of the wastewater samples led to improve the effectiveness of the photocatalytic treatment; thus, the combination of flocculation-photocatalysis treatments at low light intensity of 30 W/m2 leads to achieve the total elimination of E. coli, and under this intensity the elimination of total coliforms and other enterobacteriaceae increased 5.48% compared to the photocatalytic treatment alone. These treatment conditions led to comply the Colombian regulations for dairy wastewater.M. Hernández-Laverde would like to thank Gobernación de Boyacá for the concession of a MsC researcher grant.
