Emergence and Collapse of Peace with Friend Selection Strategies

    No full text
A society consisting of agents who can freely choose to attack or not to attack others inevitably evolves into a battling society (a \'war of all against all\'). We investigated whether strategies based on C. Schmitt\'s concept of the political, the distinction of a friend and an enemy, lead to the emergence and collapse of social order. Especially, we propose \'friend selection strategies\' (FSSs), one of which we called the \'us-TFT\' (tit for tat) strategy, which requires an agent to regard one who did not attack him or his \'friends\' as a \'friend\'. We carried out evolutionary simulations on an artificial society consisting of FSS agents. As a result, we found that the us-TFT results in a peaceful society with the emergence of an us-TFT community. In addition, we found that the collapse of a peaceful society is triggered by another FSS strategy called a \'coward\'.Community, Carl Schmitt, a Friend and an Enemy, Tit for Tat, Coward, Evolutionary Simulation

The relative contributions of physical and microbiological factors to cohesive sediment stability

    No full text
The stabilising effects of natural benthic diatom and bacterial assemblages on cohesive sediments were compared with those caused by physico-chemical binding alone. Cohesive sediment beds were reconstructed in 4 annular laboratory miniflumes, using sediment collected at 5–6 m water depth from a local fjord. The sediment was left to stabilise (consolidate) for 1, 2, 5 and 10 days, before being fully resuspended in a series of erosion experiments. The flumes were aerated and subjected to different light/dark conditions; antibiotics were used to isolate diatom from bacteria effects. During consolidation, a constant current velocity was maintained, at a speed well below erosion threshold.‘Natural’ sediment regained 27% of its original stability after 1 day, and 85% after 5 days. Complete ‘natural’ sediment stability was regained within 10 days. Benthic diatoms (mainly Nitzchia sp., Gyrosigma sp. and Pennales sp.) were responsible for about 80% of the biostabilisation, whilst bacteria contributed 12%, indicating the importance of light as a controlling factor for surface sediment stability. Relative to physico-chemical binding, the increase in erosion threshold induced by benthic diatoms was 120%, and by bacteria 20%. Where the assemblage consisted of both diatoms and bacteria, the increase was 150%, indicating that natural bed values are not a simple summation of the two effects, i.e. diatoms plus bacteria. Using the results, a first generation empirical relationship describing the relative contributions of microbenthic and physico-chemical factors in the development of erosion threshold is presented. Empirical relationships containing biostabilisation coefficients are important for better computer model predictions of sediment transport. <br/

Princess Kirana: my little friend on campus

    No full text
Childhood is a time of exploration and learning, where lessons from trial and error leave lasting impressions. I am excited to share the story of my little friend, Kirana, who has been a part of my life on campus. Kirana is not only cute and intelligent, but also incredibly curious. She has roots in both Malaysia and Indonesia and her parents, who are successful businesspeople, run a restaurant at the International Islamic University Malaysia. Kirana recently completed her kindergarten education and will soon begin Primary One. As a Malay child, she attended a Chinese preschool, and her parents plan to support her throughout her primary education. In a Chinese vernacular school, most subjects are taught in Mandarin, but Muslim children like Kirana are also taught Islamic Studies (Pendidikan Islam), Malay, and English as required by the Ministry of Education. I have known Kirana since she was very young. She was once shy and reserved, but because I am familiar with psychology and Montessori’s ideas on child development, I used humour during my visits to the restaurant, which brought her joy. Gradually, Kirana began to trust me and started joining me at my breakfast table to learn from me. Over the years, our friendship grew stronger. Kirana is now like a grandchild, a little friend, and an obedient student to me. Upon her graduation from kindergarten, I gave her a gift with the following note: “A Gift for Kirana” “In celebration of her successful completion of her kindergarten education, we wish her all the best in her primary education.” Through this journey, I have watched Kirana grow into an inquisitive and confident young girl, and I look forward to seeing her continue to thrive in the years ahead
