Topping Turbines: Adding New Life to Older Plants

    No full text
An existing power plant can be repowered at a modest investment cost through a topping turbine installation. Essentially, this consists of replacing the existing old, low pressure boilers with new, high pressure boilers and adding a new, high pressure, non-condensing turbine (topping turbine) . The high pressure steam generated in the new boilers is supplied to the throttle of the high pressure turbine and exhausted at the pressure required by the existing, old, low pressure, condensing turbines. The exhaust from the topping turbine is then supplied to the throttle of the existing turbines. The additional capacity results from the kilowatts generated in the topping turbine while reducing the steam pressure from the throttle to the exhaust conditions. Also, because this steam is not condensed, there is no loss of the latent heat of condensation of the steam to the condenser circulating water. Consequently, the thermal efficiency of the cycle is considerably enhanced

Robert Topping was born in West Lafayette, Indiana. His father was on the faculty in the School of Electrical Engineering from 1903 to 1949. Topping talks about growing up in West Lafayette and graduating from Purdue in 1950 with a BS in Science. During the Korean War, he served as an Information Specialist in the US Air Force at Castle Air Force Base in Merced, California. After serving a stint on a newspaper in Michigan, he came to Purdue in 1962 as Assistant Director of the Bureau of Information. He served as Director of the University News Service until 1976. He then became Assistant to the Vice President for Advancement. Topping talks about the Office of Publications and its role in the university communication chain. Topping is the author of several publications about Purdue: The Hovde Years and A Century and Beyond: The History of Purdue University

Evaluation of Positive Action Training Scheme (e-PATS)

South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust serves a population of approximately 1 million people living across the large geographical area of Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield. Approximately 6.4% describe themselves as South Asian compared with 4.28% of the workforce of the Trust. There is evidence that diversity in the workforce benefits organisations, employees, service users and the wider community. Positive action is a process permitted by law to overcome longstanding disadvantages experienced by minorities because of earlier discrimination in education and other aspects of their life. Positive action is seen by many, including governments, as one strategy that can used to address discrimination in employment and service provision

Retrofitting A Topping Turbine For Performance And Mechanical Improvement.

    No full text
LecturePg. 93-100Current design technology applied to existing rotating equipment can produce significant energy and maintenance dollar savings. The results achieved when a two-stage topping turbine was retrofitted to a three-stage configuration are presented. This unit is used to drive a synthesis gas compressor train in a 1000 ton/day Kellogg ammonia plant. The topping turbine retrofitting was conducted by Transamerica Delaval for Canadian Industries, Limited in their Sarnia, Ontario plant. The presentation is broken into two parts: the first part examines the modifications made for performance improvements, and the second part examines the modifications made for improved mechanical performance. Data are presented comparing the rotor response predictions of both design and the actual field test results

Supercharged topping rocket propellant feed system

    No full text
A rocket propellant feed system utilizing a bleed turbopump to supercharge a topping turbopump is presented. The bleed turbopump is of a low pressure type to meet the cavitation requirements imposed by the propellant storage tanks. The topping turbopump is of a high pressure type and develops 60 to 70 percent of the pressure rise in the propellant
