    Web3-based role and token data access: the case of building material passports

    Long-term access to lifecycle data is key to a successful transition towards a circular built environment. However, the underlying technology often remains centralized and risks becoming inaccessible over time. In this paper, we investigate whether decentralized access methods using Web3, i.e. blockchain and decentralized data storage protocols, can help to mitigate this limitation. We implement Web3 data access mechanisms for a material passport with both a role-based and a token-based smart contract. Initial results suggest that Web3 offers a promising approach to data access over the lifecycle of a built asset-but only with careful design choices.Integral Design & ManagementDesign & Construction Managemen

    Artificial dataset generation to enhance the design exploration of residential buildings through data-informed energy load forecasting models

    This study aims to assist urban planners and building designers in taking informed decisions based on energy performance – simulating a real-world urban development scenario – using limited computational resources. In particular, this paper proposes a new approach that integrates existing studies on building loads forecasting by using a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) generated dataset based on significant geometrical parameters. This overcomes the needs for large datasets – often difficult to access.The results demonstrate that the data-driven approaches have addressed the buildings' load predictions with a reasonable accuracy while significantly reducing the calculation time required

    Laryngeal manifestation of Forestier’s disease

BACKGROUND: Forestier's disease is a rare disorder involving bony growths that can occur in various parts of the spinal column, mostly asymptomatic, but these osteophytes, very rarely have been associated with serious complications. AIM: We report a 69-year-old man who was admitted at foniatric departement for evaluation of presenting hoarseness, dysphagia and laborious breathing. CASE PRESENTATION: Noninvasive endolaryngeal imaging and radiological examination revealed distortion of left side of the larynx pushing to the right due to bony mass of the anterior part of cervical spine which was prominent at the left side. The symptoms of the patient presented were caused by Forestier's disease as found by the imiging. CONCLUSIONS: In clinical practice it is advisable to take into consideration Forestier's disease as a possible cause of hoarseness and dysphagia in rare cases

    Towards integrated digital twins for construction and manufacturing

    A digital twin (DT) can enhance construction management with comprehensive real-time simulations. However, research rarely considers prefabrication factories, whose processes have a significant impact on cost and duration. It remains unclear how construction DTs can achieve their expected benefits without dynamically interacting with the DTs of manufacturing facilities. To address this, a DT integration model is proposed. It builds upon systems theory and describes integration across the three layers objectives, processes, and data & tools. A theoretical example demonstrates potential benefits of integrated DTs.     Lythrum salicaria L. (Lythraceae) as a promising source of phenolic compounds in the modulation of oxidative stress: Comparison between aerial parts and root extracts

    Lythrum salicaria is a flowering plant traditionally used for inflammatory diseases, gastrointestinal ailments, dysentery, and as astringent for external use. The aim of this study was to determine the phenolic content, antioxidant, cytotoxic, and antimicrobial activities of L. salicaria aerial part and root methanol extracts, as well as the protective effects against oxidative damage on DNA and on a cell-based model. Moreover, simulated in vitro digestion studies were performed to estimate the stability of individual compounds present in the extracts. L. salicaria extracts contained a significant amount of total phenolic compounds and several phenolic compounds including C-glycoside flavones, orientin, isoorientin, and vitexin, were identified in extracts. The extracts demonstrated high antioxidant potential in different in vitro methods, moderate antimicrobial properties, and low cytotoxicity on studied normal and cancer cell lines. Also, the extracts showed significant DNA protection and protection of cells against arsenite-induced oxidative stress. These results suggest that, although the aerial part of L. salicaria is in extensive use since ancient times as a medicinal plant, its root may also possess the valuable biological properties and both could be used as functional food ingredients, considering their good antioxidant and antigenotoxic activities, and stability during in vitro digestion

    Teaching BIM: a comparison between actual and future perspectives

    Building Information Modeling BIM in AEC education is a promising teaching strategy. The aim of the European project BENEDICT is to analyze teaching approaches to Building Information Modeling (BIM) for the construction industry. The goal of this research is therefore to perform an exhaustive analysis on the methods of transmission of BIM awareness and education in some American universities with the aim of comparing them with the BENEDICT approach developed in Italian, Estonian and Finnish Universities. Therefore, a teaching plan that aims to standardize and unify relevant teaching programs, tools and methods is developed, tackling existing skill gaps and mismatches between academia and industry
