Nellix EVAS system in concomitant iliac aneurysm

    No full text
The purpose of this book is to assess the efficacy of the Nellix endoprosthesis in the treatment of patients with AAA, underlining the characteristics, the modalities of implantation, all the possible indications according to the IFUs suggested by the manufacturer and outside the same, the limits related to the implant and the monitoring procedures during the follow-up of the treated patients. Only long-term results will allow a complete and definitive assessment on the real possibilities of use of Nellix, but the data collected from the current experiences of the single centers and those of the trials are very encouraging and promising for an adequate and safe use of this endoprosthesis in the treatment fo aortic aneurismal disease

    The Status of Emergency Workers

    No full text
Without safe, timely, and unhindered access to affected territories, humanitarian organizations and relief personnel cannot give prompt and efficient help to affected populations. To this end, a number of States have concluded bilateral or multilateral agreements (which sometimes evolved through a series of regional agreements) providing for specific types of legal and administrative facilitation. Facilitation measures can also be found in various guidelines, models, and codes of conduct developed by experts or by the humanitarian community, including the IDRL Guidelines. However, today’s legal framework is far from clear, and there are many gaps and weaknesses that constrain the IDRL in addressing bureaucratic hurdles that hinder the access of emergency workers to the affected territory and their functioning. The purpose of this chapter is to evaluate the effectiveness as well as the gaps and weaknesses of this body of law. After defining the issue at stake (Sect. 23.1) and analyzing what international law generally provides regarding the obligations of domestic authorities in allowing and facilitating humanitarian assistance in times of disaster (Sect. 23.2), the chapter examines the restrictions on entry into the country of operations (Sect. 23.3), and the restrictions on operations (Sect. 23.4) being faced by relief personnel, with special focus on the issuance of work permits and the recognition of professional qualifications; impediments to their movement; engagement, and termination of locally engaged personnel; opening of bank accounts; and issues of double taxation and insurance coverage. While the specifics on military personnel are further analyzed in Sect. 23.5; Sect. 23.6 is devoted to the analysis of the duties and obligations of disaster relief personnel in relation to relevant international and national laws. The concluding part of the chapter suggests, with a de lege ferenda perspective, how this complex legal framework could be amended to meet existing and future challenges

Social Networking in Adolescents: Time, Type and Motives of Using, Social Desirability and Communication Choices

The evolution of digital media has changed the patterns and motives for its use among adolescents and has impacted their communication choices within their family and social networks. The objectives of this study are to understand whether peers communicate through a social network (SN) or by voice and their view of the relative social desirability of these alternatives. After the informant’s consent signature, adolescents completed a series of self-report questionnaires on the use of SN, communication preferences, and social desirability online. Most of the adolescents belonged to the 17–19 age group (83.6%) and were female (68.9%). Adolescents spent more than 3 h/day on Whatsapp and more than 2 h/day on Instagram, while the use of Facebook was on average only 35 min/day. Females used digital media longer than males. Adolescents aged 17–19 years choose more Facebook and voice modes compared to adolescents aged 14 and 16 years. Alternative modes of Whatsapp and voice were chosen more than social networks in their communication strategies, especially for negative topics. Motives for use were, in addition to boredom, related to maintaining one’s social sphere with peers. Some educative considerations were made based on these result

Appearance/Image- and Performance-Enhancing Drug Users: A Forensic Approach

    No full text
Image- and performance-enhancing drugs include a wide range of substances used to promote physical changes to enhance appearance. Anabolic androgen steroids are the most widely used image- and performance-enhancing drugs along with a wide variety of additional substances. The aim of this study was to identify the pathological changes pertaining to the cardiovascular system possibly involved in the death and characterize the substances associated with steroid use and their possible role in the death. A series of deaths involving image- and performance-enhancing drug users were selected. Nandrolone and testosterone were the most frequently identified steroids. The most commonly illegal drugs found were tetrahydrocannabinol, cocaine, and methadone. Antidepressants, opioids, benzodiazepines, and barbiturates were also found. These findings highlight that results obtained from postmortem investigations should be meticulously evaluated to understand the weight that each identified substance may have played in the death process and exclude any alternative causes of death
