Wilbur Schramm and International Connections in Communication Research

    No full text
This article was meant to fill in a lacuna in the biography the author is completing about his mentor, Wilbur Schramm (1907-1987). Schramm was an early and important contributor to the creation of a university discipline of communication study. There has been no full-length biography about Schramm, but a number of shorter accounts about his career do not mention his long involvement with scholars from other countries. His influence on communication study outside the U.S. is examined in this article

Theta-point polymers in the plane and Schramm-Loewner evolution

We study the connection between polymers at the θ temperature on the lattice and Schramm-Loewner chains with constant step length in the continuum. The second of these realize a useful algorithm for the exact sampling of tricritical polymers, where finite-chain effects are excluded. The driving function computed from the lattice model via a radial implementation of the zipper method is shown to converge to Brownian motion of diffusivity κ=6 for large times. The distribution function of an internal portion of walk is well approximated by that obtained from Schramm-Loewner chains. The exponent of the correlation length ν and the leading correction-to-scaling exponent Δ1 measured in the continuum are compatible with ν=4/7 (predicted for the θ point) and Δ1=72/91 (predicted for percolation). Finally, we compute the shape factor and the asphericity of the chains, finding surprising accord with the θ-point end-to-end values

    Whole-plane self-avoiding walks and radial Schramm-Loewner evolution : a numerical study

We numerically test the correspondence between the scaling limit of self-avoiding walks (SAW) in the plane and Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE) with κ = 8/3. We introduce a discrete-time process approximating SLE in the exterior of a small disc and compare the distribution functions for an internal point in the SAW and a point at a fixed fractal variation on the SLE, finding good agreement. This provides numerical evidence in favor of a conjecture by Lawler, Schramm and Werner. The algorithm turns out to be an efficient way of computing the position of an internal point in the SAW

Farm-audit-versus farm-advisory-system - The economics of quality assurance systems

    No full text
This paper focuses on the problem of quality assurance in agricultural production within the special context of a compulsory farm-audit-system recently brought forward by the EU. In Germany there is a far reaching (quality) control gap that-in view of the difficult national financial situation-cannot be filled by traditional means of mandatory regulations and monitoring. It could possibly be bridged by further privatization of former state-run controlling and monitoring tasks. Against this background, the newly suggested Farm-Audit-System is to be assessed. An in depth analysis of already existing quality-management-approaches shows, however, that within the agricultural sector there are fundamental (economic) barriers which inhibit a purely private initiative to install quality-auditing-schemes. Thus, an (in the beginning) state-run compulsory farm-audit-program to launch a broad quality initiative seems to be justifiable
