    Densification: Hyaluronan Aggregation in Different Human Organs

    Hyaluronan (HA) has complex biological roles that have catalyzed clinical interest in sev-eral fields of medicine. In this narrative review, we provide an overview of HA aggregation, also called densification, in human organs. The literature suggests that HA aggregation can occur in the liver, eye, lung, kidney, blood vessel, muscle, fascia, skin, pancreatic cancer and malignant mela-noma. In all these organs, aggregation of HA leads to an increase in extracellular matrix viscosity, causing stiffness and organ dysfunction. Fibrosis, in some of these organs, may also occur as a direct consequence of densification in the long term. Specific imaging evaluation, such dynamic ultraso-nography, elasto-sonography, elasto-MRI and T1ρ MRI can permit early diagnosis to enable the clinician to organize the treatment plan and avoid further progression of the pathology and dys-function

    A Change in the Ion Selectivity of Ligand-Gated Ion Channels Provides a Mechanism to Switch Behavior

    First author Jennifer Pirri is a doctoral student in the Neuroscience Program in the Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) at UMass Medical School.Behavioral output of neural networks depends on a delicate balance between excitatory and inhibitory synaptic connections. However, it is not known whether network formation and stability is constrained by the sign of synaptic connections between neurons within the network. Here we show that switching the sign of a synapse within a neural circuit can reverse the behavioral output. The inhibitory tyramine-gated chloride channel, LGC-55, induces head relaxation and inhibits forward locomotion during the Caenorhabditis elegans escape response. We switched the ion selectivity of an inhibitory LGC-55 anion channel to an excitatory LGC-55 cation channel. The engineered cation channel is properly trafficked in the native neural circuit and results in behavioral responses that are opposite to those produced by activation of the LGC-55 anion channel. Our findings indicate that switches in ion selectivity of ligand-gated ion channels (LGICs) do not affect network connectivity or stability and may provide an evolutionary and a synthetic mechanism to change behavior.Neuroscienc

    Funneling Spontaneous Emission into Waveguides via Epsilon-Near-Zero Metamaterials

    In this work, we discuss the use of epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metamaterials to efficiently couple light radiated by a dipolar source to an in-plane waveguide. We exploit both enhanced and directional emission provided by ENZ metamaterials to optimize the injection of light into the waveguide by tuning the metal fill factor. We show that a net increase in intensity injected into the waveguide with respect to the total power radiated by the isolated dipole can be achieved in experimentally feasible conditions. We think the proposed system may open up new opportunities for several optical applications and integrated technologies, especially for those limited by outcoupling efficiency and emission rate

    Unraveling the Effect of Carbon Nanotube Oxidation on Solid-State Decomposition of Ammonia Borane/Carbon Nanotube Composites

    Among the routes to perform hydrogen release from ammonia in solid state, the nanoconfinement into a carbonaceous matrix or the use of carbon-supported catalysts for the thermal degradation of ammonia borane (AB) is the most interesting one. Oxidized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) represent a suitable choice for preparing AB mixtures or for anchoring catalysts for dehydrogenation. Nevertheless, literature lacks detailed study about the influence of CNT oxidation degree on the AB degradation/hydrogen release. In this study, we first described in a comprehensive way that the thermal degradation of AB mixed with CNTs by varying the CNT oxidation degree enlightens the degradative routes mainly active in each case. Using highly oxidized CNTs, we observed a decrement of activation energy of the degradative process up to around 53% and the activation/suppression of different pathways based on the amount of oxygen functionalities present in the mixtures. Furthermore, the presence of oxidized CNTs modulated the solid-state reactivity of AB reducing the release of nitrogen/boron species together with hydrogen. These findings lead the way for the design of new hydrogen storage materials

    Atteggiamenti verso la flessibilità e la sicurezza lavorativa: un’indagine empirica condotta attraverso la tecnica delle libere associazioni a parole-stimolo

    L’obiettivo di questo contributo è quello di esplorare, attraverso la tecnica delle associazioni libere a parole stimolo, atteggiamenti e percezioni della flessibilità e della sicurezza nel mondo del lavoro, in relazione anche alle organizzazioni in esso implicate (l’azienda e il sindacato) e ad alcune variabili di tipo psicologico sociale. A questo fine, 410 lavoratori hanno compilato un questionario contenente cinque termini induttori in ordine casualizzato (FLESSIBILITA’, SICUREZZA, LAVORO, SINDACATO, AZIENDA) cui dovevano associare le prime parole che venivano loro in mente. Inoltre, il questionario comprendeva alcune scale di atteggiamento per la misura dell’insicurezza lavorativa percepita, della soddisfazione lavorativa, del commitment organizzativo e della soddisfazione nei confronti del sindacato. L’analisi delle corrispondenze ha evidenziato un quadro complesso derivante soprattutto da elementi contrapposti e contrastanti in termini di valenze e significati emotivi, che variano a seconda della soddisfazione, del committment, della sindacalizzazione e del genere dei soggetti. Questi risultati vengono discussi sottolineando il ruolo rilevante giocato dagli aspetti psico-sociali e dalle differenze di genere nell’interpretazione e nella percezione dei temi e degli ‘attori’ del mondo del lavoro
