Explanation in the Social Sciences. A Theoretical and Empirical Introduction

    No full text
A natural or social phenomenon is explained when one presents its description (what?), finds the laws which account for its causes (why?) and provides the micro-level mechanisms underpinning its occurrence (how?). Usually, social sciences explain thanks to theoretical models which are later on logically discussed and empirically tested. Phenomena like strikes, charities, wars or inflation are accounted for through models which causally connect social variables. However, a complete explanation is reached only if the actions and interactions underpinning the social event are also pointed out. Thus, causal explanations based on variables must be supplemented with intentional explanations based on rational actions aiming at instrumental or value-goals. Eventually, the author illustrates the way history accounts for the events of the past, by means of analytical narrations, where unique occurrences are combined with causal and intentional social scientific explanations. The book, by means of clear arguments and simple reasoning, provides a basic introduction to the above mentioned philosophical and methodological topics. Many empirical examples, tables and figures make the assimilation of the subject-matter easier

This article wants to analyse the specific role of the Insmli (now Parri) network in the practical development and theoretical debate about public history in Italy. In particular it distinguishes three levels of public history and shows how the Istituto nazionale per la storia del movimento di liberazione in Italia (Insmli) acted in everyone since its birth, developing an intense dissemination, especially digital, in the last twenty years

Response time analysis for G-EDF and G-DM scheduling of sporadic DAG-tasks with arbitrary deadline

    No full text
New programming models have been proposed to exploit the parallelism of modern computing architectures. Also in the real-time domain more detailed task models are under evaluation to provide a tighter analysis of parallel application with precedence and timing constraints. This paper presents two schedulability tests based on Response Time Analysis for determining whether a set of sporadic DAG-tasks with arbitrary deadlines can be scheduled by G-EDF or G-DM on a platform consisting of m identical processor. The first test is a simple polynomial time test, while the second one is a pseudo-polynomial time test. Our tests exploit the combinatorial properties of the DAGs by considering the interference experienced by each vertex. We describe a set of simulations showing that our tests outperform the tests described in [7] in terms of schedulability ratio and running time. We also provide resource augmentation bounds for our polynomial time test when considering single-DAG systems
