Hydraulic head fluctuations from 2016 to 2019 at three locations in the Milan City area (northern Italy)
This dataset contains daily averaged hydraulic head values of the shallow aquifer in the Milan City area. Hydraulic head fluctuations were used to calibrate the 3D FEM numerical model in the research article "Modeling the interference of underground structures with groundwater flow and remedial solutions in Milan" (De Caro, M., et al., 2020). See the associated Data in Brief article "Hydro-stratigraphic datasets for the reconstruction of a large scale 3D FEM numerical model in the Milan metropolitan area (northern Italy)" (Previati, A., et al., 2020) for the location of the three groundwater monitoring boreholes
Test bench for characterization and durability tests of motorbike clutches
In the paper, a new test bench for characterization and durability assessment of multi disc wet clutches for motorbike applications is presented. The design of the new test bench is inspired by the current SAE standards J2490 and J286 that refer to the testing of friction material for automatic transmissions wet clutches. Differently from the test bench described in the two standards, which is mainly designed to test the friction material, the test bench presented in this paper has been designed for testing the whole clutch, comprising all discs and the actuation mechanism. The lubrication system of the clutch utilized on the test bench is very similar to the one present on the actual motorbike. The design and instrumentation of the new test rig is analysed and discussed in the paper. The test bench has been used for the characterization of different motorbike clutches. The bench has proved to be able to measure the clutch characteristic for different temperatures and clutch wear levels. A very good repeatability of the tests has been achieved allowing for a comparison of different clutches design, friction material properties and operating conditions (temperature,..). Some experimental results are presented and discussed in the paper
Reproductive biology of Parazoanthus axinellae (Schmidt, 1862) and Savalia savaglia (Bertoloni, 1819) (Cnidaria, Zoantharia) from the NW Mediterranean coast
Despite the wide distribution of zoanthids, little is known about their pattern of reproduction. Here we investigate the reproductive biology of two Mediterranean species, the common Parazoanthus axinellae (Schmidt) and the rare Savalia savaglia (Bertoloni). For both species, samples were collected during an annual cycle, from January to December 2005, in the Western Mediterranean (Ligurian Sea, Italy). Both species are gonochoric. In P. axinellae the sex-ratio (n colonies = 30) showed a slight predominance of male colonies (M/F = 1.35), whereas in the population of S. savaglia (n colonies = 15) a predominance of females was found (M/F = 0.3). In P. axinellae the first gametocytes were visible in March, whereas in S. savaglia they became visible in May. Both species reproduce at the end of autumn when seawater temperature begins to decrease. Parazoanthus axinellae (10 m depth) spawns eggs and sperms in November, whereas S. savaglia (67 m depth) spawns in December. In P. axinellae sexes were segregated on a rocky wall, with males occurring deeper, whereas male and female colonies of S. savaglia were irregularly dispersed in the population. The maximum number of oocytes differed between the species, being higher in P. axinellae than in S. savaglia
Optimal design of a beam subject to bending: a basic application
The minimisation of both the mass and deflection of a beam in bending is addressed in the paper. To solve the minimisation problem, a multi-objective approach is adopted by imposing the Fritz John conditions for Pareto-optimality. Constraints on the maximum stress and elastic stability (buckling) of the structure are taken into account. Additional constraints are set on the beam cross section dimensions. Three different cross sections of the beam are analysed and compared, namely the hollow square, the I-shaped and the hollow rectangular cross sections. The analytical expressions of the Pareto-optimal sets are derived. As expected, the I-shaped beam exhibits the best compromise in structural performance, which is related on the particular loading considered
Driver-Steering Wheel Interaction during Cornering
This research aims at understanding how the driver interacts with the steering wheel, in order to detect driving strategies. Such driving strategies will allow in the future to derive accurate holistic driver models for enhancing both safety and comfort of vehicles. The use of an original instrumented steering wheel (ISW) allows to measure at each hand, three forces, three moments, and the grip force. Experiments have been performed with 10 nonprofessional drivers in a high-end dynamic driving simulator. Three aspects of driving strategy were analyzed, namely the amplitudes of the forces and moments applied to the steering wheel, the correlations among the different signals of forces and moments, and the order of activation of the forces and moments. The results obtained on a road test have been compared with the ones coming from a driving simulator, with satisfactory results. Two different strategies for actuating the steering wheel have been identified. In the first strategy, the torque is provided mostly by just one single arm and hand. In the second strategy, the torque is created by both of the two arms and hands, which apply forces and moments in opposite directions. Future holistic driver models able to describe the forces acting at whole body may benefit from the outcomes of this research
Investigation on the mass properties of cars
The knowledge of the mass properties (centre of gravity location and inertia tensor) of cars is crucial for the analysis of their dynamic performances. The measurement of such properties is not always performed and their value is estimated by 3D models of some empirical formula. In this paper, the mass properties of cars are investigated by analysing the measurements performed at the Politecnico di Milano. The measurements have been realized by the InTenso+ test rig of the Politecnico di Milano in the period from 2000 to 2018. The test rig is basically a multi-bar pendulums carrying the body under investigation and oscillating from well-known initial conditions. By means of a proper mathematical procedure, the mass properties of the body are accurately measured in a very short testing time. The obtained measures are statistically analysed and correlations are found with easily accessible vehicle data. On the basis of such correlations, formulae are proposed to have a quick and reasonable estimation of the most relevant mass parameters (centre of gravity height and diagonal terms of the inertia tensor) of any vehicle
