Analysis of X-ray telescope angular resolutions: application to NHXM.
X-ray Astronomy is a young eld of research. Since the rst X-ray observation performed by means of a rocket ight in the '60s, the greatest leap forward in Xray telescopes performances was brought in the '70s when the imaging capability was introduced thanks to the use of grazing incidence optics. The excellent results of grazing incidence telescopes in the soft x-ray imaging are well-known and represented by the results obtained with emissions ROSAT, Chandra and XMMNewton.
However, the extension of the imaging capability to the hard X-rays (E 10 keV) will allow the observations of sources critical for their role in cosmology like
AGN, and clusters of galaxies. In the last decade the aim of extending the imaging
capability to hard X-rays (E 10 keV) brings to the development of speci c and
challenging missions, in this thesis the reference mission is New Hard X-ray Mission
(NHXM), a mission of the Italian Space Agency, which development is in cooperation
with the INAF-Astronomical Observatory of Merate (OAB) and with Media Lario Tech. for the studies concerning the NHXM Wolter-like optics production. Wolter-like optics, the de-facto standard for the realization of high resolution focusing telescopes, are manufactured by Nickel-Cobalt eletroforming. Once the optics theoretical performances have been optimized by means of the opportune optical design strong image degradation can still be caused by surface errors e ect generated in the manufacturing process. When surface pro le errors are on macroscopical length scale ( mm) their e ects on optical performance scan be evaluated considering geometrical optics and simulating the optical path of incident photons by means of ray-tracing codes. In this case the imaging capability degradation is independent from photons energy. Further image degradation e ects are due to the microroughness of the reflection surface which e ect behaviour follows the X-ray scattering laws. The XRS e ect is to spread a fraction, increasing with photons energy, of the incident radiation around the direction of the reflected beam. When hard X-ray are considered the requirements to limit the XRS e ects are to have reflection surface with small surface errors also on microscopical length scale ( m scale).
My Ph.D. research deals with the development of methods allowing estimating and
controlling the X-ray Wolter-like telescopes optics angular resolution degradation
caused by optics surface errors. My activities are separable in two fields:
The effects on angular resolution at high energy of the optical surface microrougness
variation. This point had been met changing the reflecting layer substrate in the replica process of manufacturing.
The development of two new metrological devices, capable of estimating the
angular resolution degradation, due to mandrels and mirror shells shape errors.
The two presented points requires the multi-instrumental complete optics surface
characterization, covering the surface errors wavelengths scale in the broad interval 1 m -1 m.
The thesis discussion is organized as follow: Presentation of the NHXM mission and of its target observational sources

Between 1250 and 1266 the marquis Oberto Pelavicino became lord of some of the main cities in Lombardy of the thir- teenth-century, after holding the title of imperial Vicar under the reign of Federico II and Corrado IV: Cremona, Piacenza, Pavia, Vercelli, Milano, Brescia, Alessandria e Tortona. It has been possible to analyse the government's system that the marquis put into place through the prosopographic cataloguing/filing of all the podestà that Pelavicino had sent in the different towns under his control. On one hand the rectores social profile and political membership show how families and groups supported him in the different centres, on the other one, the officers' geographical origin and the study on their circulation offer an interpretative framework of how Pelavicino administered his dominio. Therefore, the study of the Palavicinian mayors has pointed out the different ways through which the marquis relied to the cities, highlighting the domain’s specificity and allowing a view on the lordship that is attentive to every different city’s reality, but in a prospective that is able to take into account the domain’s over-local dimension at the same time
LE SIGNORIE DI OBERTO PELAVICINO (1249-1266)
The aim of the project is to investigate Oberto Pelavicino’s lordship over some italian city-states in the second half of the 13th Century. Between 1249 and 1266 he exerted his power over Cremona, Piacenza, Pavia, Vercelli, Milan, Brescia, Alessandria and Tortona (but his dominion can be recognized also in the cities of Asti, Parma, Pontremoli and Reggio).
A debate about the dominion of the city was recently brought to the center of the affairs of the communalistic historiography, despite facing a critical afterthought of the relationships between city-state and lordship.
On the one hand my purpose is the investigation of the reasons and the ways through which Oberto Pelavicino ruled over such a wide territorial structure. On the other hand I analyze the reasons that led different cities to bow to him.
Unfortunately, the municipal archives regarding this period and the cities ruled by Oberto don’t exist anymore. Therefore the research is based on the private acts and the documents of ecclesiastical institutions: among the Milan State Archive for what concerns Milan, Pavia, Cremona and Brescia; and on the maps and the papers of Archive of St. Antonio’s basilica and of Piacenza State Archive. Finally, we take advantage of other documents from the State Archives of Vercelli, Pavia, Brescia, Cremona and Alessandria.
As a consequence of the private nature of the majority of the available documentation, the identification of collaborators is the base for my work. The reconstruction of Pelavicino’s political entourage allows us to notice which families and social groups supported him. Therefore, this makes us understand if they were the same in every cities and how the pars marchionis concretely acted.
The analysis of the functionary “circuits” represents a useful key of investigation in order to inquire how Pelavicino ruled the city system he was controlling and this is why we are allowed to look at his lordship always being focused on the reality of each cities, and, at the same time, being able to keep in mind the dimension of the local dominion

ErbB-3 and ErbB-4 expression in the mouse olfactory system
The interplay between neuregulins and the ErbB receptor family has a pivotal role in the development of several tissues, including the nervous system, and is maintained in the adult olfactory system where extensive plasticity and neurogenesis are retained. In the present work we show the immunohistochemical localization of ErbB-3 and ErbB-4 in the olfactory system of adult normal and lesioned mice. The expression of ErbB-3 is demonstrated to be restricted to the ensheathing cells of the olfactory nerve and to a few substentacular cells of the olfactory epithelium (OE). ErbB-3 staining circumvents the glomeruli but is never observed inside them or elsewhere in the adult olfactory bulb. Conversely, ErbB-4 immunoreactivity is found in all the periglomerular and mitral/tufted cells of the olfactory bulb (OB) and to a minor extent in the olfactory neurons and basal cells of the OE. Interestingly enough, cells coming out from the rostral migratory stream of the subependymal layer (SEL), as well as isolated cells in the granule cell layer, possibly migrating cells, strongly stained for ErbB-4 expression. Lesions of the olfactory epithelium have been performed by unilateral intranasal irrigation with ZnSO4 and 3 weeks after the irrigation, the olfactory bulbs were analyzed for olfactory marker protein (OMP), tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), ErbB-3 and ErbB-4 expression. In the deafferented OB, the drastic loss of immunoreactivity for OMP was accompanied by a strong reduction of ErbB-3 expression. Most of the deafferented dopaminergic interneurons switched off TH expression. In the deafferented periglomerular and mitral/tufted cells ErbB-4 expression was turned off and down, respectively. No differences were noted at the granular cell layer level in the deafferented OB with respect to control. Taken together our results suggest that, in normal conditions, neuregulins are involved in the survival of the ensheathing cells of the olfactory nerve through ErbB-3 activation and in the functional activity of postsynaptic neurons through ErbB-4 activation
