Fitzwilliam Museum McClean Bequest
No full textFrank McClean (1837–1904) was not only an astronomer and pioneer of objective prism spectrography, but also an accomplished and systematic collector of art, books and manuscripts. McClean's collections, which were left to the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, on his death, were at that time the most notable bequest since the Museum's foundation. The fifteenth- and sixteenth-century printed books in his bequest, most of them produced in continental Europe, are described here in detail, with bibliographical descriptions and information on their provenance. Illustrated books are listed separately. The author of the catalogue, Charles Edward Sayle (1864–1924) was an erudite and popular librarian whose career was devoted to cataloguing and editing rare books in the University of Cambridge. His obituary praised him as 'a fine example of the type of man who likes to catalogue things in the right order'.</jats:p

McClean's collections, which were left to the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, on his death, were at that time the most notable bequest since the Museum's foundation. They included illuminated manuscripts, early printed books, and the ancient and medieval decorative objects described in this catalogue. The medieval applied arts in particular were of immense value to the Museum's holdings, including extremely rare items not hitherto represented there. This catalogue, prepared in 1911–12 by O. M. Dalton, assistant keeper of British and medieval antiquities at the British Museum, lists over 140 items: ivory carvings, enamels, jewellery, gems and a smaller number of Chinese, Japanese and Egyptian objects.</jats:p

No full textIndigenous Epistemology problematizes the self-reflexive inquiry between two researchers engaged in transnational collaboration that asserts experiential pedagogy as a tool to decolonize research methodology and honor the inter-generational stories that empower Indigenous people across the globe. The authors demonstrate the direct connection between Black Lives Matter, SOSBlakAustralia and the Maroons of Jamaica as examples of contemporary Indigenous people disrupting hegemony through agentive action that inspires global awareness and pushes for systemic change. In elevating the critical epistemologies of the ancient cultures of the Aboriginals of Australia and the African Diaspora, the authors assert that the legacies and current operations of colonialism must be disrupted and replaced with an emancipatory epistemology.No Full Tex
"Prejudicial to the effective conduct of public affairs": More questions for TNA on FOI and Reclosure
No full textEarlier this year, Alison McClean and Andrew Lownie used separate History & Policy opinion articles to raise concerns about the reclosure of files in the National Archives (TNA). In this update of the situation, Alison suggests that the TNA has been unwilling to engage with its critics and notes a worrying trend to remove from the online catalogue the titles and descriptions of reclosed files, making it difficult to trace what has been removed from public access
A Descriptive Catalogue of the McClean Collection of Manuscripts in the Fitzwilliam Museum

James (1862–1936) is probably best remembered as a writer of chilling ghost stories, but he was an outstanding scholar of medieval literature and palaeography, who served both as Provost of King's College, Cambridge, and as Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum, and many of his stories reflect his academic background. His descriptive catalogues of manuscripts owned by colleges, cathedrals and museums are still of value to researchers today. This volume describes the McClean Collection, bequeathed to the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1904 by Frank McClean, a Victorian polymath who was a civil engineer by profession but also pursued scientific research and the collection of antiquities, including the 201 manuscripts and 230 early printed books now in the Fitzwilliam Museum. The book is illustrated with 108 plates showing folios from the collection.</jats:p

A sandwich ELISA for measuring benzo[a]pyrene–albumin adducts in human plasma
No full textExposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons has often been quantified via DNA or human serum albumin (HSA) adducts of the carcinogenic metabolite benzo[a]pyrene diol epoxide (BPDE). We previously reported a sandwich ELISA, using 8E11 as capture antibody and anti-HSA as detection antibody, that detected intact BPDE adducts in HSA isolated from plasma. After confirming that BPDE binds to HSA at His146 and Lys195, we modified the ELISA to measure intact BPDE–HSA directly in human plasma. To adjust for interference due to nonspecifically bound HSA on well surfaces and to cross-reactivity of the antibodies, the ELISA employs paired wells with and without addition of BPDE tetrols to deactivate 8E11. By performing assays in quadruplicate, a series of sample-specific adjustments and screening steps are used to reduce measurement errors that are a consequence of detecting low BPDE–HSA concentrations in the general population. ELISA measurements of BPDE–HSA in plasma from smoking and nonsmoking subjects (range 0.280–2.88 ng BPDE–HSA/mg HSA) and from highway workers with and without exposure to asphalt emissions (range 0.346–13.9 ng BPDE–HSA/mg HSA) detected differences in BPDE–HSA levels in the a priori expected directions
Markov Chain Modelling for Geriatric Patient Care

Objectives:
To show that Markov chain modelling can be applied to data on geriatric patients and use these models to assess the effects of covariates.
Methods:
Phase-type distributions were fitted by maximum likelihood to data on times spent by the patients in hospital and in community-based care. Data on the different events that ended the patients’ periods of care were used to estimate the dependence of the probabilities of these events on the phase from which the time in care ended. The age of the patients at admission to care and the year of admission were also included as covariates.
Results:
Differential effects of these covariates were shown on the various parameters of the fitted model, and interpretations of these effects made.
Conclusions:
Models based on phase-type distributions were appropriate for describing times spent in care, as the ordered phases had an interpretable structure corresponding to increasing amounts of care being given.</jats:p
