    M-test for intercept after pre-testing on slope

    In the M-estimation methodology, a procedure was develop for testing the intercept after pre-testing on the slope (Yunus and Khan, in press). The (i) unrestricted test (UT), (ii) restricted test (RT) and (iii) pre-test test (PTT) on intercept defined when the non-sample prior information (NSPI) on the slope is (i) unknown, (ii) certain or (iii) uncertain are considered. This paper investigates the performance (size and power) of the UT, RT and PTT by introducing the coefficient of variation. It is shown that the PTT achieves a reasonable dominance over the other tests asymptotically and performs better for larger coefficient of variation

    Score test in robust M-procedure

    A score type test based on the M-estimation method for a linear regression model is more reliable than the parametric based-test under mild departures from model assumptions, or when dataset has outliers. An R-function is developed for the score M-test, and applied to two real datasets to illustrate the procedure. The asymptotic power function of the M-test under a sequence of (contiguous) local alternatives is derived. Through computation of power function from simulated data, the M-test is compared with its alternatives, the Student's tt and Wilcoxon's rank tests. Graphical illustration of the asymptotic power of the M-test is provided for randomly generated data from the normal, Laplace, Cauchy, and logistic distributions

    Allium zhobicum Nazar Khan, Amir Sultan & R.M. Fritsch, species nova. Figs. 1-6, 17 Type: Balochistan, Zhob district, Qamardin Karez, Khutkandai, 31°31’31”N 68°14’38”E, Nazar Khan Mandokhel, 24 April, 2020 (RAW101342). Diagnosis: The shape of ovary is most similar to A. mirum Wendelbo, but this species has papery outer bulb tunics and up to 8cm broad, elliptical leaves, a campanulate perigonium, up to 3 cm long pedicels, and longer obovate tepals of brown purple colour. The violet upper parts of filaments are similar to those of A. hindukuschense Kamelin & Seisums, but A. zhobicum differs from A. hindukuschense by much broader and scarcely recurved tepals of lilac colour and with rounded apices, and spherical ovaries. Description: Bulbs 1.5-2.5 cm in diameter, globose; outer tunics initially light brown, delicate and fragile but coriaceous and brown when dry; inner tunics membranous, white. Scape 10-30 cm long, cylindrical, glabrous, green to yellowish green. Leaves 1-3, longer than scape, linear, 5-10 (18) mm broad, margins entire towards apex and papillate towards base. Spathe membranous, up to 1 cm with brownish nerves, splitting into 3 lobes longitudinally to obliquely. Umbel hemispherical, dense. Pedicels unequal, 10-20 mm long, green to purple. Perigonium stellate, tepals whitish lilac to lilac with violet to purple nerve, 6-7 mm long and 1.5-1.8 mm broad, elliptical-linear to oblong, recurved, obtuse to acute, outer tepals broader at base than inner ones. Filaments narrow triangular, at base connate and adnate to tepals, shorter to slightly longer than tepals, violet at apex becoming creamy toward base; inner filaments slightly broader at base than outer ones. Anthers 1-2 mm, violet to brownish, dorsifixed. Ovary green, six lobed depressed-globose; style 3-6 mm, filiform, exserted; stigma violet. Capsule triangular, greenish white, olive green at angle; seeds black, 2-3 mm long, irregularly shaped to ovate and D-shaped. Plants growing on sandy clay to sandy loamy soil near Chukhan have longer scapes, larger leaves, and lax flowers with pinkish-lilac tepals. Vernacular name: Khatol. Etymology: The species is named after the Zhob district. Distribution: Found in several localities in Zhob district (Chukhan, Larai, Khutkandai, Qamardin Karez) along the border to Afghanistan. Ecology: Usually found growing in sandy loam. Ethnobotany: The whole plant is edible. Especially the bulbs are collected in large amounts by the local population and are eaten raw. The species might become threatened by over-collecting in the future. The flowers are also eaten by goats and sheep. Additional specimens examined: Balochistan, Zhob district, Chukan, 31°15’39”N 68°52’40”E, 2017 m asl, Nazar Khan Mandokhel, 23 April, 2020 (RAW 101348). The new species belongs to A. subg.     The G-M-N motif determines ion selectivity in the yeast magnesium channel Mrs2p

    The highly conserved G-M-N motif of the CorA-Mrs2-Alr1 family of Mg(2+) channels has been shown to be essential for Mg(2+) transport. We performed random mutagenesis of the G-M-N sequence of Saccharomyces cerevisiae Mrs2p in an unbiased genetic screen. A large number of mutants still capable of Mg(2+) influx, albeit below the wild-type level, were generated. Growth complementation assays, performed in media supplemented with Ca(2+) or Co(2+) or Mn(2+) or Zn(2+) at varying concentrations, lead to identification of mutants with reduced growth in the presence of Mn(2+) and Zn(2+). We hereby conclude that (1) at least two, but predominantly all three amino acids of the G-M-N motif must be replaced by certain combinations of other amino acids to remain functional, (2) replacement of any single amino acid within the G-M-N motif always impairs the function of Mrs2p, and (3) we show that the G-M-N motif determines ion selectivity, likely in concurrence with the negatively charged loop at the entrance of the channel thereby forming the Mrs2p selectivity filter

    Optimization of laser beam welding of stainless steels in overlap joint configuration

    This paper presents experimental design approach to process parameter optimization for laser welding of martensitic AISI416 and AISI440FSe stainless steels in a constrained overlap configuration. To determine the optimal laser-welding parameters, a set of mathematical models were developed relating welding parameters to each of the selected weld characteristics. Both the statistical and the experimental validations for the models were confirmed. The weld quality criterion considered determining optimal parameters was the maximization of weld penetration depth and resistance length. Laser power and welding speed in the range of 855-930W and 4.50-4.65 m/min respectively with a fiber diameter of 300μm were identified as the optimal set of process parameters. However, reducing the laser power in the range 800-840W and increasing the welding speed in the range 4.75-5.37 m/min caused stronger and better welds
