Locking hook bolt and method for using same
A locking hook bolt, which may be used for securing cable to support posts in guardrail assemblies, and a method for using the same are provided. The locking hook bolt includes a first leg, a second leg, and an arcuate portion coupling the first and second legs such that the second leg extends generally parallel with, and spaced apart from, the first leg. A locking portion configured to engage a support post extends from, and forms an angle of approximately 90 degrees with, the second leg. The first leg of the locking hook bolt includes a threaded portion opposite the arcuate portion.U
Groundwater characteristics at Seabee Hook, Cape Hallett, Antarctica
Seabee Hook is a low lying gravel spit adjacent to Cape Hallett, northern Victoria Land, in the Ross Sea region of Antarctica and hosts an Adélie penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae) rookery. Dipwells were inserted to monitor changes in depth to, and volume of, groundwater and tracer tests were conducted to estimate aquifer hydraulic conductivity and groundwater velocity. During summer (November–February), meltwater forms a shallow, unconfined, aquifer perched on impermeable ice cemented soil. Groundwater extent and volume depends on the amount of snowfall as meltwater is primarily sourced from melting snow drifts. Groundwater velocity through the permeable gravel and sand was up to 7.8 m day−1, and hydraulic conductivities of 4.7 × 10−4 m s−1 to 3.7 × 10−5 m s−1 were measured. The presence of the penguin rookery, and the proximity of the sea, affects groundwater chemistry with elevated concentrations of salts (1205 mg L−1 sodium, 332 mg L−1 potassium) and nutrients (193 mg L−1 nitrate, 833 mg L−1 ammonia, 10 mg L−1 total phosphorus) compared with groundwater sourced away from the rookery, and with other terrestrial waters in Antarctica
Voluntary Closing Hook Prosthesis
The Wilmer Rotational Instant Seizing Tentacle (WRIST) is a Voluntary Closing (VC) hook prosthesis for transradial amputees, developed by the WILMER Group at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. Dissatisfaction with the currently used bodypowered arm prostheses, expressed by patients and members of the WILMER group, led to a study devoted to the design of a new kind of VC arm prosthesis. This research resulted in a prototype of the WRIST which is neither elbow nor shoulder controlled. The WRIST consists of a two-fingered hook connected to a socket by a hinge. The distance between the hook fingers is related to the manually adjustable hook-socket angle in a way that dorsal flexion of the hook results in grasping. This provides the concept with some unique features: any pinching force can be locked to prevent fatigue, the hook can be closed at all times, and the system does not require a harness or operating cables. Feasibility study for a marina at Hook of Holland - Zeejachthaven Hoek van Holland: Haalbaarheidsstudie
The distance between marinas along the Dutch coast is large. By building marinas on strategic locations along the coast, sailing times can be reduced significantly. However, building marinas bordering the North Sea is expensive due to the lack of sheltering from waves. Hook of Holland is such a strategic location, located at a distance of 30 kilometers of Stellendam and 20 kilometers away from Scheveningen. The realization of a marina at Hook of Holland will lead to season lengthening, differentiation of the beach function and creates a boost for the local economy. In addition, it will be a stepping stone for creation of a network of marinas along the Dutch coast which will enable day trips from marina to marina, boosting the economy further. Waves in the marina basin will lead to damage to the yachts if the significant wave height Hs is higher than Hs =0.6 m. The design storm for the marina has a return period of 200 years and will lead to waves with a significant wave height up to Hs = 4.3 m at the project area. Also it will lead to a water level rise up to 4.2 m above NAP. To reduce the waves in the basin, a large breakwater is needed which is expensive. An entrance of the marina along the Nieuwe Waterweg is cheaper but politically unachievable. A previous study for a marina with the entrance along the Nieuwe Waterweg did not make it to realization due to this factor. A marina is mostly financed with real estate development and funding of the government. Real estate development at the project area is difficult to realize due to the nearby Natura 2000 area ‘Solleveld & Kapittel duinen’ and its associated strict nature legislation . Land reclamation is a possibility to make real estate development possible. However at the moment this is not attractive due to the prices for land reclamation are higher than inland development of these functions. Also the real estate market is in a downward state due to the economic crisis. A marina at Hook of Holland needs to be on a small scale and well integrated in the surroundings without a large land reclamation project, such a marina will cost around 50 million euro. A marina at Hook of Holland is technically feasible and has a positive effect on the required coastal maintenance. However the direct revenues are much lower than the construction costs. Anatomia endoscopica della “cochlear hook region” e del fustis: importanza per la chirurgia
The cochlear hook region can be considered as the interface between the middle and inner ear. The identification of surgically-relevant endoscopic landmarks of this anatomical entity and assessment of their clinical value is still lacking in the literature. Procedures like cholesteatoma surgery and minimal invasive endoscopic approaches to the lateral skull base may particularly benefit from these considerations. We hypothesize that the spatial orientation of anatomical landmarks in the cochlear hook can be expressed in angles and are reproducibly identifiable by transcanal otoendoscopy. Therefore, endoscopic dissection of the cochlear hook region was performed in 32 temporal bone specimens. Topographic anatomy was documented and analysed. We performed computed tomography of 28 specimens to assess the region in three-dimensional reconstructions. The mean angle between the round window and the basal scala tympani was assessed 25.9° in endoscopic and 28.2° in three-dimensionally reconstructed models. The fustis was recognised as a reliable landmark for the basal turn. A mean angle of 155.4° to the basal scala tympani was assessed. A slight bulging without obstruction of the basal turn was observed in 5 cases. The utility of the revealed anatomical details was assessed in minimal invasive endoscopic lateral skull base approaches. In conclusion, we described the angles between anatomical landmarks of the cochlear hook region. Moreover, the angle as recorded through an endoscope was found to be reliable compared to three-dimensional reconstructions from computed tomography.La “cochlear hook region” (CHR) può essere considerata come una interfaccia tra l’orecchio medio e l’orecchio interno. L’identificazione endosco-pica dei reperi chirurgici della CHR e la valutazione della loro rilevanza clinica non sono ancora state descritte in letteratura. Specialmente la chi-rurgia del colesteatoma e gli approcci mini-invasivi al basicranio laterale possono beneficiare di queste considerazioni. Ipotizziamo in questo lavoro che l’orientamento spaziale dei reperi chirurgici nella CHR possono essere espressi in forma di angoli e risultano essere riproducibili in approcci otoendoscopici. 32 dissezioni di ossa temporali sono state condotte in questo lavoro. L’anatomia topografica è stata documentata e analizzata. Una TC è stata eseguita in 28 temporali per valutare l’anatomia attraverso ricostruzioni 3D. L’angolo medio tra la finestra rotonda e il giro basale della chiocciola (scala tympani) è risultato essere di 25,9° in endoscopia, e di 28,2° nelle ricostruzioni 3D. Il fustis ha rappresentato un repere affidabile per il giro basale della chiocciola, con un angolo medio di 155,4° con il giro basale della scala tympani. Una lieve prominenza senza ostruzione del giro basale della chiocciola è stata osservata in 5 casi. L’utilità di questi rilievi anatomici è stata confermata negli approcci mini-invasivi al basicra-nio laterale. In conclusione gli angoli tra i reperi anatomici della CHR così come descritti attraverso gli approcci endoscopici forniscono un orienta-mento utile per procedure come impianti cocleari, approcci mini-invasivi all’apice petroso o accessi transpromontoriali al condotto uditivo interno
Isolation and characterization of a putative collagen receptor from Staphylococcus aureus strain Cowan 1
In a previous study we demonstrated that cells of Staphylococcus aureus strain Cowan bind 125I-collagen in a receptor-ligand type of interaction (Speziale, P., Raucci, G., Visai, L., Switalski, L.M., Timpl, R., and Höök, M. (1986) J. Bacteriol. 167, 77-81). In the present communication we report on the isolation and preliminary characterization of a putative collagen receptor from a lysate of S. aureus strain Cowan. Antibodies raised against a collagen receptor positive strain inhibit the binding of 125I-collagen to bacterial cells, whereas antibodies raised against a collagen receptor negative strain were without effect. Solubilized cell surface components did not exhibit any measurable affinity for collagen-Sepharose. However, the inhibitory effect of the antibodies against bacterial cells was neutralized by the lysate from a receptor-positive but not receptor-negative strain. A collagen receptor assay was designed based on this observation and used to develop a receptor purification protocol involving anion exchange chromatography, ammonium sulfate precipitation, and gel chromatography. Using this procedure a protein with an apparent Mr of 135,000 was purified. This protein which was present on a collagen receptor-positive strain but not on a receptor-negative strain could completely neutralize the inhibitory activity of the antibodies raised against S. aureus strain Cowan. Furthermore, antibodies raised against the 135-kDa protein inhibited the binding of collagen to bacteria, and this protein is tentatively identified as a collagen receptor
