In gesprek met Johan Heyns

No full text
In conversation with Johan Heyns The author commends Professor Heyns for his enormous contribution to the Reformed theology in South Africa. Heyns opted for a dynamic and inspiring theology of the Kingdom of God, which calls forth a response of obedience from all believers. However, the author is of the opinion that the philosophical character of the theology of Heyns, and especially his allegiance to the philosophy of Stoker in which the concept of the creation plays a dominant role, has hampered his possibility to develop a profound exegetical and Christological theology that could be critical enough of the kind of heresies which threatened the church during the apartheid era

Title written at head of spine. The 1st plate of the Getty copy is first variant, with the two sections numbered 1 and 2. Plates [2]-[13] are from the 2nd printing, with text in roman and gothic, except for plate [4], which has roman and italic and so is from the 1st printing. See Bib. Descriptions are given of Eutobrilus annetteae (Joubert & Heyns, 1979), Achromadora ruricola (De Man, 1880) and Monhystera somereni Allgen, 1952, incorporating additional information obtained during the present study. New distribution records are given for Mononchus aquatic us Coetzee, 1968, M. truncatus Bastion, 1865, Mylonchulus minor (Cobb, 1893), Chronogaster africana Heyns & Coomans, 1980 and Ironus longicaudatus De Man, 1884. Morphometric data are tabulated, and where appropriate, illustrations are also given

Complete descriptions are given of Mesodorylaimus potus Heyns, 1963, a new record for the Kruger National Park and M. aegypticus (Andrassy, 1958) recorded here for the first time from South Africa. Additional information and new distribution records are given for Mesodorylaimus sp. cf paralitoralis (Basson & Heyns, 1974) and Thornenema haldum (Thome, 1939). A compendium is also presented for the 17 recognized Mesodorylaimus species from South Africa

Die Stellenbosche Heyns: Nagedink oor die vroeë, middel en latere jare van ’n akademiese loopbaan

his contribution is structured in the genre of an academic letter to a deceased colleague, in this case Prof. Johan Adam Heyns (1928–1994). He was appointed for a short period from 1966 to 1970 as a senior lecturer at the faculty of theology at Stellenbosch University. This contribution offers a reappraisal of this period in the academic career of Prof. Heyns. His main focus at the time, in line with his teaching duties, was on apologetics and, to some extent, also ethics. The author engages with Prof. Heyns’s views at the time and offers a sixfold mirror to position this phase of his career, namely in terms of the tensions between orthodoxy and modernity, between the philosophical influence of Henk Stoker and the theological influence of Herman Bavinck, and between the implementation of apartheid and the struggle against that. This mirror is held up in order to reflect on the early, middle and later stages of any academic career including that of the author, to contrast the radiance and risk of youthful academic rigour and the wisdom but also the rigidity that may come with mature age. Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: The research done, is not of an interdisciplinary nature. This article contributes to a growing corpus of literature assessing the legacy of Prof. Johan Adam Heyns

Lewis‐Acid‐Catalyzed Synthesis of Amadori and Heyns Dipeptides

No full text
Amadori and Heyns reactions are milestone reactions of carbohydrate chemistry. There have been little efforts in transforming these rearrangement reactions to useful catalytic tools. We demonstrate herein, synthesis of Amadori and Heyns dipeptides via Lewis acid-catalysis. The accomplished catalytic Amadori and Heyns synthesis is devoid of protection and deprotection steps either for dipeptides or for reducing sugar. By the developed catalytic method we achieved, tagatose Amadori dipeptides via reaction of D-galactose with dipeptides including L-alanyl glycine, L-alanyl-L-alanine, L-alanyl-L-glutamine, glycyl-L-phenylalanine, L-leucyl glycine, L-pheynylalanylL-valine in excellent yield. In addition, Heyns dipeptides were also achieved by employing D-fructose and dipeptides consisting of L-alanyl glycine, L-alanyl-L-alanine, L-alanyl-L-glutamine, glycyl-L-phenylalanine, L-leucyl glycine. The realized Lewis acid mediated catalytic method is practical, quantitative, and avoids chromatographic separation techniques

Thirteen nematode species are recorded from Botswana. Illustrations are given for Ecuménicas monohystera (de Man, 1880) Thome, 1974; Eudorylaimus diadematus (Cobb in Thorne & Swanger, 1936) Andrássy, 1959; Labronema mauritiense Williams, 1959; Disoolaimus brevis Siddiqi, 1964; D. major Thorne, 1939; Aporcelaimellus adriaani Botha & Heyns, 1990; A. micropunctatus Botha & Heyns, 1990; A. papillatus (Bastian, 1965) Baqri & Khera, 1975; A. parapapillatus Botha & Heyns, 1990 and a specimen belonging to Prodorylaimus or to Laimydorus. Measurements are given for the above-mentioned species as well as for Discolaimium simplex Siddiqi, 1965 and Discolaimoides bulbiferus (Cobb, 1906) Heyns, 1963. A new Mesodorylaimus species viz. M. usitatoides is described. For the first time males are described for A. adriaaniand A. micropunctatus. Discolaimus paramajor Coomans, 1966 is considered a possible synonym of D. major

Investigation and Application of Amphoteric alpha-Amino Aldehyde: An in Situ Generated Species Based on Heyns Rearrangement

No full text
In situ generation of the reactive amphoteric a amino aldehyde with simple alpha-hydroxy ketones and phenyl amine-via Heyns rearrangement was proven to be feasible. Metal-free domino reactions based on this reactive intermediate were effectively used to afford important N-heterocycles including polysubstituted pyrroles, indoles, and quinoxalines conveniently. A simple starting material, water as the only byproduct, and diversity of the useful products will make this method greatly attractive for pharmaceutics
