Consumer and shear force evaluation of steaks from the M. Serratus ventralis
An in-home evaluation of steaks from the M. Serratus ventralis was conducted to
determine consumer acceptance. Steaks were also evaluated by Warner-Bratzler shear
force (WBS) evaluations. Steaks from the M. Serratus ventralis were either blade
tenderized, injected with a salt, phosphate, and papain solution, or served as a control.
Consumers (n = 136) were not given a specific method of cookery, but were asked to
document cooking method and degree of doneness, overall-like, tenderness desirability,
tenderness of cut, juiciness desirability, juiciness of cut, flavor desirability, and flavor
intensity. When cooked on the grill, in the oven, or in a skillet, injected steaks received
the highest (P < 0.05) ratings for tenderness. Furthermore, consumers rated injected and
blade tenderized steaks higher (P<0.05) for overall like when they were cooked on the
grill to a higher degree of doneness. Oven cooked steaks that were injected, rated higher
(P<0.05) than blade tenderized steaks for juiciness. When cooked on the grill, juiciness
ratings were also higher (P<0.05) for injected steaks compared to control steaks.
Moreover, injected steaks had significantly lower (P<0.05) WBS values when compared
to blade tenderized and control steaks. Overall, ratings for all steaks were adequate,
confirming the M. Serratus ventralis as a potential high quality steak for use in the retail
market
Magnetooptical properties of semiconductor quantum structures
Title: Magnetooptical Properties of Semiconductor Quantum Structures Author: Štěpán Uxa Department: Institute of Physics of Charles University Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Roman Grill, PhD Supervisor's e-mail address: [email protected] Abstract: In this theoretical work, a detailed study of optical properties of excitons in double quantum wells subject to magnetic and electric fields is presented. Starting from the well-known Luttinger formulae describing the real valence-band structure of III-V semi- conductor compounds, we developed an efficient way to solve the Schrödinger equation of a coulombically-bound pair electron-hole forming an exciton. Derived formulae were illus- trated on relevant figures, giving us an opportunity to better understand the effects of external fields on the studied system. Dispersion relations, the shift of energy levels in an electric field, absorption and photoluminescence spectra, and charge density distribution were calculated and achieved results were discussed in detail. Keywords: exciton, double quantum well, coupled quantum wells, Luttinger (-Kohn) hamiltonian, valence-subband mixin

Generalized open sets in grill N-topology
The aim of this paper is to give a systematic development of grill N-topological spaces and discuss a few properties of local function. We build a topology for the corresponding grill by using the local function. Furthermore, we investigate the properties of weak forms of open sets in the grill N-topological spaces and discuss the relationships between them
Magnetooptické vlastnosti polovodičových kvantových struktur
Název práce: Magnetooptické vlastnosti polovodičových kvantových struktur Autor: Štěpán Uxa Katedra: Fyzikální ústav Univerzity Karlovy Vedoucí diplomové práce: doc. RNDr. Roman Grill, CSc. E-mail vedoucího: [email protected] Abstrakt: V této teoretické práci je představena podrobná studie optických vlastností excitonů v dvojitých kvantových jamách umístěných v magnetickém a electrickém poli. Vycházejíce ze známých Luttingerových vztahů popisujících reálnou strukturu valečního pásu polovodičových sloučenin typu III-V, rozvinuli jsme efektivní způsob řešení Schrödin- gerovy rovnice pro coulombicky vázaný pár elektron-díra tvořící exciton. Odvozené vzta- hy byly ilustrovány na odpovídajících obrázcích, dávajíce nám možnost lépe porozumět efektům vnějších polí na studovaný systém. Byly spočteny disperzní relace, posun energe- tických hladin v elektrickém poli, absorpční a luminiscenční spektra i rozložení nábojové hustoty, a dosažené výsledky byly podrobně diskutovány. Klíčová slova: exciton, dvojitá kvantová jáma, vázané kvantové jámy, Luttingerův (-Kohnův) hamiltonián, míchání stavů ve valenčním pásuTitle: Magnetooptical Properties of Semiconductor Quantum Structures Author: Štěpán Uxa Department: Institute of Physics of Charles University Supervisor: Assoc. Reduced response to the thermal grill illusion in chronic pain patients
OBJECTIVE Sensory illusions may reveal fundamental features of the nervous system. The thermal grill illusion is such a pain illusion, where interlaced warm and cool temperature bars (thermal grill) produce a paradoxical burning sensation. Previous studies have only systematically investigated the thermal grill illusion in pain-free volunteers. The objective of this study was to investigate whether the response to the thermal grill illusion was tolerable in patients with chronic pain and whether the response differed between patients with chronic pain and pain-free volunteers. SUBJECTS Sixteen pain-free participants and 18 chronic pain patients (seven not receiving opioids and 11 receiving opioids). METHODS The thermal grill response was investigated using a custom-built thermal grill. Heat and cold pain thresholds were also determined. RESULTS Chronic pain patients reported less intense pain, heat, and unpleasantness to the thermal grill compared with pain-free participants; in particular, there was an overall main effect for significantly less heat from the thermal grill compared with pain-free participants (P = 0.016). At the 22/38°C combination, although the majority of pain-free participants experienced the illusion to some degree, the majority of pain patients in both groups did not (median pain score 0). Although perceived heat from the thermal grill was significantly lower in chronic pain patients, both heat and cold pain thresholds did not differ among the three populations. CONCLUSIONS This preliminary data suggest that the thermal grill response may provide insights into pain sensitivity that are not detected by conventional thermal quantitative sensory testing.Nicole M. Particle-in-cell simulations of the near-field of a lower hybrid grill
Lower hybrid (LH) waves in the frequency range 1 to 10 GHz are used to heat and to drive current in a tokamak. A crucial issue for the future devices is the coupling of the wave power from the launching structure, the grill, to the plasma. A related problem is the formation of hot spots on the grill limiters and other components that are magnetically connected to the grill region. A probable explanation for these asymmetric heat loads is the parasitic absorption of the LH power. In parasitic absorption, the short-wavelength modes are absorbed by electrons within a very short distance in front of the grill. The cold edge electrons (Te ∼ 25 eV) may reach energies up to 2 keV through stochastic acceleration in the electric field in front of the lower hybrid grill.
The particle-in-cell (PIC) technique is one of the most popular methods of kinetic simulations of plasmas. In PIC codes, a spatial grid is used to describe the field quantities, while the particles move in the continuous space. The field and particle motion are solved self-consistently. The advantage of the PIC codes is that they take into account the kinetic effects and the non-linearities of the problem. They also give the deposition profiles unlike pure test particle simulations.
In this thesis, the use of PIC codes has been extended to a whole new branch of applications, the near-field of the LH grill. During the work, the grill model used in the electrostatic PIC code has been developed. The parasitic absorption and the generation of fast electrons in front of the waveguide mouth have been explored. The absorption and the heat load on the grill limiter increases with the edge density, the edge temperature and the launched power density. A weak indication of a power threshold was observed. The simulation results can explain experimental observations in Tore Supra. According to the simulations, the heat loads are not a problem in the next generation launchers used in ITER.reviewe
