The paper aims to examine the connections between textile waste management and the new kinds of goods enjoyment in the sharing economy. The article analyses some of the main digital platforms that operate in the fashion renting sector, both by mediating between private individuals and by establishing relationships between professionals and consumers, to give a new life to clothing items characterized by the so-called idling capacity. In this regard, the positive effects of sharing on the textile industry’s environmental impact are emphasized while proposing a valorization of waste as a resource or productive asset, capable of diversifying its function thanks to the technological tools currently available in society

Il senso del limite : problemi aperti nell’analisi del legislativo

    No full text
There have been different seasons in the analysis of the Italian parliament and its legislative process, each one characterised by peculiar research questions. While «growing older», this field of inquiry has increasingly relied, both in its quantitative and qualitative variations, on some standardized research designs and operationalizations. This article addresses some methodological questions regarding the validity and consistency of the established research choices made in the investigation of the Italian parliament, its activities and internal dynamics

Brand New, Somewhat New or Rather Old? : The Italian Legislative Process in an Age of Alternation

    No full text
This special issue of ‘South European Society & Politics’ explores the transformation of Italy’s law-making process, and presents fresh data and a series of original analyses, with regard to four key topics: the role played by the bicameral structure of parliament; the effects and dynamics of the amendment process; the overall level of consensualism in the adoption of most bills; and finally, the more adversarial, complex nature of the budgetary process. Here, we offer a brief introduction to the Italian legislative process during the 1996-2006 decade, as a framework for subsequent in-depth analyses, followed by the reasons for our choice of topics for discussion

Compliance with EU Norms : not a «One-Size-Fits-All» Problem

Most compliance studies share the epistemological assumption of the existence of a one-best-way assuring good transposition and implementation of EU norms, and, symmetrical-ly, a set of variables that homogeneously produce problems and failures. Alternatively, in the article we will elaborate on the idea of different paths to (non-)compliance, adopting a qualitative comparative perspective. We will test this intuition using data on compliance levels in the fifteen EU member states. Our methodological exercise shows the existence of two sets of remote conditions – resembling the distinction between Westminster and Consensus democracies – that enhance non-compliance. Within those institutional set-ups, different combinations of proximate conditions trigger that outcome. Some factors even play the opposite role in the two contexts, thus suggesting to reconsider the mentioned one-size-fits-all assumption

Economy or austerity? Drivers of retrospective voting before and during the Great Recession

During the Great Recession, exceptionally harsh economic conditions were often countered by austerity policies that, according to many, further worsened and protracted the negative conjuncture. Both elements, the poor state of the economy and the contractionary manoeuvers, are supposed to reduce the electoral prospects for incumbents. In this article, we compare the relative explanatory powers of these two theories before and during the economic crisis. We demonstrate that in normal times citizens are fiscally responsible, whereas during the Great Recession, and under certain conditions, austerity policies systematically reduced the support for incumbents on top of the state of the economy. This happened when the burdens of the manoeuvers were shared by many, in more equal societies, when the country was constrained by external conditionalities and when readjustments were mostly based on tax increases
