Female cardiologists prepared to sacrifice a family for a career are doing well in Italy, according to Maria Grazia Modena, MD, FESC, past-president of the Italian Society of Cardiology and chief, Institute of Cardiology, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy. But she is frustrated that some of her colleagues seem more interested in medical politics than cooperation. She talks to Barry Shurlock, MA, Ph

Inferenze archeoambientali delle sequenze polliniche della Terramara di Baggiovara - Modena (XVII - XVI sec. a.C.)

The study reports data obtained by the palynological analyses of samples taken from the Terramara of Baggiovara (17° - 16° century BC), located in the municipality of Modena. Pollen allow the plant landscape that existed before, during and after the terramara to be reconstructed. Data suggest that the economy of the site was mainly based an animal breeding rather than on crop cultivation. In particular, the landscape was open and forest cover was low. Pollen spectra show a strong presence of pastoral indicatorr, cerealia and other synathropic indicators

Gender Medicine in Italy: The Point of View of Maria Grazia Modena: The Story, Limits, and Plans: My Personal Story

Gender medicine (GM) in Italy was born with the association I have been part of since the 90s Tailored Health for Women created by Dr. Elvira Reale and eight women doctors. We started research on risk factors for illness in women’s daily lives with Ministries of Pair Opportunity and Health, summarizing important documents in the history of GM in Italy. We had little success initially since (1) both ministers were changed and the successors were not interested in GM; (2) we were considered feminists and our congresses attended by few, all women! Each of us continued research in their own field, meeting every year with growing enthusiasm. The biggest limits for GM development in Italy are the excessive fragmentation of often self-referential associations/working groups, absence of GM in the core curriculum of medical school and of a gender-based law for health care. Finally I report of my personal story, an example of “gender related storm.”

Epidemiology and social impact of early onset dementia in the province of Modena, Northern Italy

Aims of the study. Early onset dementia (EOD), defined as onset of dementia <65 years, has a much higher social impact compared to the more common late onset dementia. EOD epidemiologic data in Italy are extremely scarce, and international estimates of prevalence are considerably variable, ranging between 15.1 and 153/100.000 in the age 45-65. We present data from an ongoing study aimed at establishing EOD epidemiology in a Northern Italy community (Modena province, around 700.000 inhabitants). Materials. We retrospectively recruited all patients residing in Modena province referred to the Modena Baggiovara Hospital Neurologic Clinic CDCD (Centro disturbi cognitivi e demenze), by family practitioners and geriatricians of the province. Eligible patients were those affected by EOD from 2012 to January 2019. EOD was diagnosed in patients <65 years presenting with cognitive/behavioral symptoms, following a comprehensive neurological examination by a cognitive neurologist, as well as brain MRI, FDG PET scanning and CSF analyses when appropriate. Methods. We collected clinical data such as age at onset, disease severity at time of diagnosis, time delay from onset to diagnosis, and epidemiologic data including residence and occupational status. Results. We identified 223 patients with an EOD diagnosis from 2012 to January 2019. Of these, 103 are males (46,2%). 97 patients have AD (21 lvPPA, 13 PCA, 2 frontal variant), 47 have FTD (33 bvFTD, 14 svPPA), 6 have leucoencephalopathy. Mean onset age was 58,6 years (SD 5,1). Median time from symptoms onset to diagnosis was 3.1 years (SD 29,83). Mean MMSE score at diagnosis was 22,63/30 (SD 5,2). 24 patients were working at time of diagnosis (10,76%) and had to quit working due to the cognitive impairment. Two patients (0,89%) had young children (<18) at time of diagnosis. Discussion. We provide the first epidemiological data on EOD in Italy. These are consistent with the estimates calculated by transposing European data to the population of Modena province (estimated prevalence=200 patients, detected prevalence=223 patients)1. Our data show a higher percentage of atypical AD phenotypes and FTD in the EOD group compared to late onset disease2. Also, CAA and leucoencephalopaties were over-represented compared to LOD. From a social perspective, EOD has significant impacts on patients and their families: patients are generally forced to leave work, and their children are expected to need psychological support, currently not routinely available. Conclusions. Our population study provides the first data regarding EOD epidemiology and social impact in Italy

I Beni Geologici della Provincia di Modena

    No full text

Archaeobotany in urban sites: the Middle Age of Modena (Northern Italy)

    No full text
This contribution refers to the palaeoenvironmental reconstruction of the Modena town (northern Italy) in the Medieval Age. The archaeobotanical study of ten archaeological sites provided useful information to reconstruct palaeoethnobotany, history and plant landscape of the area from the 7th century to the13th century AD. A total amount of 250,000 carpological remains has been isolated (sieved from more than 600 l of soil), corresponding to more than 350 taxa, from the eight study sites (two of them are still under study). The taphonomic diversity of the deposits allowed to obtain information on: - availability of volup- tuary products, as abundant and diversified fruit; - availability of plant products to be a luxury item, and some condiments; - evidence of cultivation traditions typical of the area; - evidence of a wide range of cereal crops; - evidence of plant and care of ornamental species. Paleoecological reconstructions show the presence of wetland environments, peculiar to the area, in fact the medie- val Modena was a “water city” characterized by an extended network of canals, considered as the main vector of commerce. Finally, the floristic list suggests that in the Medieval period the biodiversity was higher than in the modern city; such floristic richness is also supported by the findings of numerous wild species worthy of attention, some of them unknown in earlier sources, others that disappeared during the 20th century and many considered rare
