Sub-wavelength light confinement in optical fibres and tapers using surface plasmons

    No full text
Light confinement beyond the diffraction limit is proposed in optical fibres and fibre tapers by exploiting surface plasmons (SPs). To achieve high transmission efficiency, light is converted into SPs at the fibre/taper tip and then converted back into light. Indeed SPs can be confined to dimensions smaller than diffraction limit, but they require stringent conditions for their excitation: the light incidence angle depends on the wavelength (Figure 1a) and it has a strong dependence on the taper diameter (Figure 1b). For this reason fibre/taper nanostructuring needs to be extremely accurate. In this work, optical fibres and fibre tapers (Figure 1c, 1d) have been nanostructured to achieve highly efficient SPs excitation and high transmission efficiency. The effect of different milling shape on transmission has also been analyzed. Transmissivities as high as 7% have been observed

Modelling distribution of habitats required for different uses by the same species: Implications for conservation at the regional scale

    No full text
Most modelling exercises use generic occurrence points of a species, but the distribution of habitats used for different purposes may differ. Modelling separately the availability of functionally different habitats may allow for the identification of the habitats mostly affecting/limiting distribution, with important implications for conservation. We analyzed the regional distribution of the black woodpecker in Northern Italy. We separately modelled the availability of feeding and nesting habitats at the fine scale (20. m. ×. 20. m), and compared the outputs with a more conventional distribution modelling procedure, which included all records and was developed at the territory scale (1. km. ×. 1. km). Both the conventional and feeding habitat models performed well (although they tended to under- and overestimate occurrence, respectively), whereas the nesting habitat model had a lower discriminatory ability. Nesting and feeding habitats show different relationships between woodpecker occurrence and habitat variables, this resulting in a weak overlap of the respective niches and in quite different distributions. The conventional model provided less information for management, being mainly affected by elevation and urbanized areas; the two specific models instead showed effects of habitat variables on occurrence of feeding and nesting sites. The availability of feeding habitat is likely the most important factor limiting distribution in the area and could be the focus of possible habitat management, which should include the preservation of grassland patches interspersed within woodlands, especially on South-facing, gently sloping mountainsides. Modelling separately the availability of functionally different habitats may provide useful information for conservation and management

    No full text

Habitat use by Moltoni’s Warbler Sylvia cantillans moltonii in Italy

Moltoni's Warbler Sylvia cantillans moltonii is a poorly studied bird endemic to a restricted area in the central-western Mediterranean. We analysed selection of different vegetation structural types by Moltoni's Warblers for singing and foraging in two hilly areas in the northern Apennines (Italy) with low-intensity farming. We related habitat use by the species to 13 habitat categories, defined mainly on the basis of vegetation structure, accounting for vegetation height and presence of broadleaved and/or coniferous plants. We assessed significant differences in the use of habitat categories with respect to their availability, analysing singing and foraging data separately. The most selected categories included medium (1.5-3 m) and/or low (< 1.5 m) shrubs. A shift in habitat use according to the different behaviours was quite evident: singing males showed a tendency toward using higher vegetation, while foraging birds relied mainly on lower layers. Additionally, our study highlights the importance of marginal features such as shrub patches in agricultural systems to allow the presence of non-grassland birds in farmland landscapes
