    Unravelling the ambiguous reproductive biology of Paspalum malacophyllum: a decades old story clarified

    In a recent manuscript published by our group we analyzed the reproductive biology of the grass Paspalum malacophyllum by using traditional embryological techniques combined with current cytological and molecular methods. Our findings confirmed apparent contradictions regarding the reproductive behavior of P. malacophyllum from six independently published reports over the past six decades.     Enforcing the ABA Guidelines in Capital State Post-Conviction Proceedings After Martinez and Pinholster

    This piece, published in Part 1 of Hofstra Law Review’s symposium marking the tenth anniversary of the ABA’s Guidelines for the Appointment and Performance of Defense Counsel in Death Penalty Cases, considers the converging pressures now impelling the states to provide the effective assistance of counsel in state capital post-conviction proceedings. On the one hand, Martinez v. Ryan, 132 S. Ct. 1309 (2012) - a case that will likely be expanded to a number of additional procedural and substantive contexts - warns the states that if they fail to provide such counsel, their capital convictions will be subject to searching federal review. On the other hand, Cullen v. Pinholster, 131 S.Ct. 1388 (2011), offers the states the promise that if they do provide such counsel their capital convictions will be very deferentially treated on federal review. Thus, the forces of federalism may cause the states to adopt a beneficial reform that the Supreme Court has been unwilling to mandate under the Constitution

    Simulated analysis of connectivity issues for sleeping sensor nodes in the internet of things

    The growth in wireless sensor network deployments requires a move towards more standardised systems to improve compatibility and to reduce development times. The technologies being developed as part of the Internet of Things, such as 6LoWPAN (IPv6 over Low power Wireless Personal Area Networks), can greatly assist with this aim.Connecting low power wireless sensor network devices to the Internet of Things presents certain challenges. One of these challenges is the lack of constant connectivity to sensor nodes with sleep states. Current internet technologies expect that devices are always contactable which is not the case in sensor networks.We simulate and evaluate several solutions to this problem in a multitude of different scenarios. We conclude that delay tolerant networking is an effective solution to the challenges created when dealing with sleep states while minimising overheads. However, current standardised delay tolerant technologies are not easily applicable for use with sensor networks, so a new standard needs to be created to meet the requirements described in the paper

    Signatures of long-lived spiral patterns.

    Azimuthal age/color gradients across spiral arms are a signature of long-lived spirals. From a sample of 19 normal (or weakly barred) spirals where we have previously found azimuthal age/color gradient candidates, 13 objects were further selected if a two-armed grand-design pattern survived in a surface density stellar mass map. Mass maps were obtained from optical and near-infrared imaging, by comparing with a Monte Carlo library of stellar population synthesis models that allowed us to obtain the mass-to-light ratio in the J-band, (M=L)J , as a function of (g - i) versus (i - J) color. The selected spirals were analyzed with Fourier methods in search for other signatures of long-lived modes related to the gradients, such as the gradient divergence toward corotation, and the behavior of the phase angle of the two-armed spiral in different wavebands, as expected from theory. The results show additional signatures of long-lived spirals in at least 50% of the objects

    Deflagration-to-Detonation Transition (DDT) Studies: Effect of Non-Uniform Obstacle Distribution on DDT

    Most of the previous work has been guided towards the understanding of this phenomenon under a uniform obstacle distribution, i.e., same obstacle shape, blockage ratio, and gap between obstacles. However, industrial facilities lack this uniform obstruction arrangement. This research aimed to gain a better understanding of which non-uniform obstacle distribution enhances or weakens the flame acceleration. For this research, a 2.77 m long detonation tube with an internal diameter of 0.04 m was utilized. For the purpose of this investigation, a rig characterization was first performed to determine if a series of explosions under the same conditions was repeatable; the obtained responses showed similar behavior. Then, a Taguchi design of experiments was used. In this matrix, the parameters that were modified were: fuel type, obstacle shape, blockage ratio, and obstacle distribution. In general, each experiment consisted of nine obstacles inserted into the first meter of the detonation tube. The obstruction in each experiment had the same shape, but different blockage ratio and spacing between the obstacles. It was found that block-shaped obstacles with a decreasing blockage ratio and a ���staggered��� obstacle distribution had the highest tendency to promote the flame acceleration and, consequently, minimize the run-up distance to obtain a detonation. In contrast, experiments that had ring-shaped obstacles with an increasing blockage ratio and a ���variation��� obstacle distribution have an adverse effect on the flame acceleration and, consequently, maximize the distance at which DDT is observed. Finally, the responses obtained from a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model were compared against data available in the literature and the experimental data obtained in this research. Even though this CFD model does not predict precisely the onset of DDT, it estimates the likelihood for having the onset of a detonation. In general, the CFD code predicts that the scenario that promotes a faster flame acceleration uses block-shaped obstacles with an equal blockage ratio and a ���staggered��� obstacle distribution. While the scenario that slows down the flame acceleration is given by ring-shaped obstacles with an increasing blockage ratio and a ���variation��� obstacle distribution. These trends agree with those from the experiment

    Use of Simulation to Analyze Block Manufacturing Methods

    In this study, a block manufacturing process is investigated using simulation as a tool to optimize resource utilization. First, the problem statement and the objectives of the study are established. Second, various data are collected by means of time studies, interviews, and physical observation of the operation. Activity durations are stripped and their distributions are obtained by using computer technology. When all required data are collected, STROBOSCOPE is used to create a model of the entire production process. The model is verified and validated to ensure that it performs as intended before running experiments. Results from experiments are analyzed by the use of spreadsheets and graphs. Recommendations with respect to the current operation and future changes are proposed. In both instances, the unit cost and the production rate are used as the criteria to determine the most effective resource usage. In conclusion, the minimization of production costs increases profit for manufacturers, reduces the construction cost for contractors, and results in lower prices to the end users.     Does strict employment protection discourage job creation? Evidence from Croatia

    Employment protection legislation in Croatia is among the most strict in Europe. Firing is difficult and costly, and flexible forms of employment are limited. Is this apparent rigidity reflected-as one would expect based on standard economic theory-in low labor market dynamics? Is job creation low and hiring limited? Is the job security of insiders achieved at the cost of outsiders not being able to enter thelabor market? The author attempts to answer these questions by examining job flows. If the employment protection legislation is binding, then job and worker turnover should be low. He shows that this is indeed the case. Hiring is limited and the average job tenure is very long in Croatia. Job destruction is low, however job creation is still lower. The result is accumulation of unemployment, in large part due to new labor market entrants not being able to find a job. The high degree of job protection also seems to strengthen the bargaining position of insiders and results in relatively high wages. So, wages in Croatia are higher than among its competitors, even after adjusting for productivity. These high labor costs are likely to contribute to limited job creation in existing firms, but also are likely to discourage the entry of-and thus job creation in-new firms. The author presents evidence that firm growth has been indeed limited in Croatia, contributing to the low employment level. The author examines other potential causes of high unemployment in Croatia (the unemployment benefit system, labor taxation, the wage structure, and skill and spatial mismatches). He argues that they do not play a substantial part in accounting for poor labor market outcomes in Croatia. The author concludes that the stringent employment protection legislation is the key labor market institution behind low job creation and high unemployment.
