Abstract We assessed the influence of recreational physical activity in young healthy women on homocysteine, a potential risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Participants were 124 23-year-old normal-weight Italian recreational athletes (performing 8.7 +/- 2.46 h week(-1) exercise) and 116 controls. Median blood homocysteine, folate and lipid markers did not differ between athletes and controls. Elevated homocysteine levels at CVD risk > or =12.0 and > or =15.0 micromol l(-1) were not different between groups. Continuous homocysteine was inversely related to folate (P or =15.0 micromol l(-1). Recreational physical exercise does not adversely impact homocysteine levels among young women. Only low folate significantly increases the risk for hyperhomocysteinemia in young women

    Stabilizzazione di una strada costiera nel Comune di Bacoli

    La strada statale Montegrillo, nel comune di Bacoli in località Baia (NA), si sviluppa per un tratto di qualche centinaio di metri in prossimità della costa, al di sopra di una falesia aggredita da frequenti fenomeni franosi dovuti all’azione erosiva del vento e del monto ondoso. I fenomeni di instabilità hanno nel tempo portato alla luce numerosi reperti archeologici la cui presenza è da ricondursi sia alla vicina città sommersa di Baia sia a numerose ville romane. Nella nota si riportano gli aspetti salienti dell’attività di progettazione relativa alla messa in sicurezza della via Montegrillo (per un tratto lungo circa 100 m). Maggiore attenzione è invece riservata alla caratterizzazione geo-meccanica della roccia e dei terreni affioranti. Con questa nota si intende infatti fornire un esempio di progettazione basata su di un modello geologico e geotecnico inquadrato negli studi già eseguiti nell’area in esame o in contesti affini, pervenendo ad un modello di analisi affidabile e convalidato, nonostante l’esiguità della campagna di indagini eseguita ad hoc

Abstract PROBLEM: To determine the best method to detect semen in human vaginal secretions. METHOD OF STUDY: Vaginal secretions from 302 pregnant women at mean 11.8 weeks' gestation were analyzed. Semen detection was assessed with: (i) measurement of total prostate-specific antigen (PSA), (ii) acid phosphatase activity, (iii) microscopic measurement of spermatozoa on Gram stain, and (iv) self-reported sexual intercourse in the past 2 days. Sensitivity and specificity were calculated for each technique in comparison with PSA levels. RESULTS: A total of 119 (39.4%) women had a detectable PSA. Compared with measurable PSA, the sensitivity and specificity for other methods were: acid phosphatase (26.9%, 98.4%), Gram stain (36.1%, 98.4%), and self-report of intercourse in the past 48 hr (41.9%, 88.8%). CONCLUSION: Compared with PSA levels, commonly used assays for recent semen exposure are inaccurate. This inaccuracy may affect the results of studies, which measure vaginal immune factors like cytokines or retrieve DNA from vaginal specimens

    SEDIMENTASI DI PANTAI SANTOLO WILAYAH PESISIR SELATAN JAWA BARAT DAN MODEL PENANGGULANGANNYA

    Pantai Santolo merupakan daerah pesisir yang terletak di Kecamatan Cikelet, Kabupaten Garut, Jawa Barat. Permasalahan sedimentasi dan pendangkalan pada mulut muara Sungai Cilauteureun yang berada di kawasan Pantai Santolo membuat ketidaklancaran arus lalu lintas pelayaran dan menyebabkan penurunan jumlah kapal motor yang berlabuh di Pelabuhan Perikanan Cilauteureun. Hal ini berakibat pada kurang optimalnya pemanfaatan sumberdaya perikanan di area tersebut. Jetty sepanjang 185 m yang telah dibangun pada bagian timur mulut sungai harus dipotong pada akhir tahun 2019 karena sedimentasi telah menyebabkan terbentuknya tombolo yang menutup alur lalu lintas kapal. Pemodelan hidrodinamika 2-dimensi dan pemodelan transpor sedimen dilakukan pada penelitian ini dengan menggunakan software Delft3D untuk menganalisis faktor-faktor hidrodinamika yang berpengaruh terhadap proses sedimentasi yang terjadi di Pantai Santolo terutama di area muara Sungai Cilauteureun sehingga dapat diketahui penanggulangan yang sesuai untuk permasalahan tersebut. Simulasi pemodelan hidrodinamika dilakukan untuk skenario musim barat dan musim timur, sedangkan pemodelan transpor sedimen dilakukan dengan durasi selama satu tahun. Jetty sepanjang 120 m di bagian utara Pulau Santolo dan “sand by passing” pada tombolo yang terbentuk di belakang potongan jetty direkomendasikan pada studi ini untuk mengatasi permasalahan yang terjadi
