The biology of composting: A review
This paper is one of the most cited references within the scientific literature dealing with microbiological aspects of compost stabilisation of organic waste. Since its publication in 1983, this review article has been included more than 95 times in the bibliographies of as many again peer-reviewed international journals. It appeared in the first volume of Waste Management & Research when Academic Press was the journal's publisher
Genotoxic effects of some agricultural pesticides in vitro tested with Aspergillus nidulans
Ten agricultural pesticides and organophosphorus insecticides were tested for the induction of three different genetic events, mitotic gene-conversion, mitotic crossing-over and mitotic non-disjunction: Curzate, Enovit, Folcidin, Fongarid, Ronilan, Cyanamide, Gardona, Gusathion, Nuvacron and Supracid. Tests were performed in vitro with and without mouse liver microsomal activation, using two different somatic diploids of Aspergillus nidulans. The induction of the genetic events was detected with selective procedures; as pesticides may cause a variety of genetic alterations, it seemed important to determine the induction of several genetic end points in this investigation. Results are reported and discussed with particular reference to the behaviour of organophosphorus insecticides when tested with eucaryotic protist cells which are not sensitive to these compounds

Studies were conducted to determine causes of gas defects in Montasio cheese. The microfloras of normal and defective cheese were examined after ripening for 20, 30 or 40 days. No effect of coliforms, yeasts, clostridia or propionic acid bacteria on incidence of gas defects was observed. Defective samples had high counts of heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria; it is suggested that these bacteria may be implicated in development of gas defects
Composting agro-industrial byproducts
Extensive research has shown that many biodegradable organic wastes can be composted, offering a convenient and economical method. Composting can also be considered as simply a means of treating organic waste for safe emission into the environment. In this paper, the application of the method of composting in the management of some agro-industrial organic wastes is investigated for: tomato processing waste, cork processing residues, exhausted olive-husks and vegetable tannery sludge
Principi del compostaggio/The principles of composting
The prominent aspects of the aerobic biostabilization of organic waste (composting) are presented and discussed in this contribution with particular emphasis on the microbiological ones. Some attention is also given to hygienic and sanitary implications as well as considerations on plant design. Compost is also analysed in its agricultural role, in particular its effects on plant growth. Problems regarding the evaluation of biological maturity and phytotoxicity are also discussed
Comparison of three windrow compost systems
A comparative analysis was made of three open composting systems, each of which was based on a different aeration system. The three methods of aeration were turning, vacuum-induced ventilation, and pressure (forced air) ventilation. Raw materials used in the study were the organic fraction of solid urban waste. Dynamics of the microbial communities during the biostabilization process is described
