HEPATOCELLULAR CARCINOMA IN THE CIRRHOTIC LIVER. IMMUNOHISTOCHEMICAL AND MORPHOMETRIC ANALYSIS. Objective: To explore how morphometry can minimize subjectivity in the assessment of liver nodules in cirrhosis using a novel classification tool. Study design: 8 hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC), 5 high-grade dysplastic nodules (HGDN), 8 large regenerative nodules (LRN), and 18 regenerative (cirrhotic) nodules (CN) obtained from cirrhotic explant livers, were analyzed using a Kontron-Zeiss KS400 image analyzer. We generated a morphometric model based on the analysis of volume fractions occupied by hepatocyte nuclei/cytoplasm, sinusoidal endothelium and lumen, neoplastic acini, fibrosis, centrilobular veins, portal arteries, veins and bile ducts, individual lesional arteries (smooth muscle actin), capillarized sinusoids (CD34), new vessels (CD31) and on surface fraction occupied by reticulin, and number in unit volume and size distribution of hepatocyte nuclei, and mean hepatocyte nucleus diameter and volume. Results: Volume fraction of capillarized sinusoids, new vessels and individual lesional arteries were more prominent in HCC and HGDN, when compared with LRN and CN, whereas surface fraction of reticulin was markedly decreased in HCC. The morphometric values of these three features were integrated into our classification tool to construct a hybrid system, which reclassified the nodules in the same categories. Conclusions: Our novel hybrid classification tool may minimize subjectivity in the histological assessment of nodular lesions in cirrhosis

Proporzioni numeriche nelle prospettive di Francesco del Cossa

    No full text

DISCOVERING THE EVERYDAY LANDSCAPE A cultural heritage education project in the urban periphery

    No full text
Heritage and landscape education is crucial to training young people in active and responsible citizenship, protection of the public assets, appreciation of the cultural diversity and intergenerational dialogue. Therefore, it cannot be limited to sporadic experiences and on outstanding heritage and contexts but must be transdisciplinary, inclusive and practicable everywhere. This book relates the research and action project “Scuola Attiva Risorse” (ScAR), winner of the Polisocial Award that recognizes research for social purposes at the Politecnico di Milano. The text describes an experimental and innovative action delivered within the fragile context of the urban peripheries. This participatory process involved schools, universities, cultural institutions, administrations and private actors in interpreting and enhancing the “hidden” cultural heritage in Milan’s fringe neighbourhoods

Comparison between PSB and VVER-1000 steam generator modeling

    No full text
This paper presents a comparison between the dynamic performance of PSB and VVER 1000 steam generator models. PSB is a large-scale integral test facility which simulates the VVER-1000/320 reactor. Volume and power scale are 1:300. It has four loops and each SG consists of 34 helicoidally tubes connected by two headers named hot and cold collector respectively. The Relap 5 nodalisation for the VVER 1000 was developed and qualified at DIMNP of University of Pisa, refs. /1/ and /4/, and the secondary side performance was investigated in detail. The goal of the paper is to analyse similarities and differences in the thermal hydraulic behaviour of the reference steam generator and of the model. The same philosophy has been pursued in nodalising the two systems
